AICNT LUKE Chapter 14

14 And it happened that when he went into the house of one of the rulers [of the][fn] Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching him closely. 2 And behold, there was a man with dropsy[fn] before him.

3 And Jesus, having responded, said to the lawyers and Pharisees, [saying][fn] “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath [or not]?”[fn] 4 But they remained silent. And taking hold [of him],[fn] he healed him and sent him away.

5 And [[answering]][fn] he said to them, “Which of you, if your {son}[fn] or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 {And they were not able to}[fn] respond [[to him]][fn] [to these things].[fn]

7 He also told a parable to the invited guests, noticing how they were choosing the places of honor, saying [to them],[fn] 8 “When you are invited [by someone][fn] [to a wedding feast,][fn] do not recline in the place of honor, lest someone more distinguished [than you][fn] {has been invited [by him][fn]},[fn] 9 and the one who invited both you and him will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your place,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, [go and][fn] recline in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he {will}[fn] say [to you],[fn] ‘Friend, move up higher’; then glory will be yours in the presence of [all][fn] who are at table [with you].[fn]

11 “For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

12 He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a lunch or dinner, do not invite [your][fn] friends, nor your brothers, [nor [your][fn] relatives,][fn] nor {your rich neighbors},[fn] lest they also invite you in return and repayment be made to you. 13 But when you make a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; 14 and you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

15 When one of those who reclined at table with him heard [these things],[fn] he said [to him],[fn] “Blessed is the one who will eat {bread}[fn] in the kingdom of God!”

16 But he said to him, “A certain man prepared a [great][fn] feast and invited many. 17 And he sent his servant at the hour of the dinner to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, because it [[all]][fn] is already prepared.’ 18 And they all alike began to make excuses. The first said [to him],[fn] ‘I have bought a field, and I need to go and see it; I ask you, consider me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to try them out; {I ask you, consider me excused}.’[fn] 20 And another said, ‘I have married a wife, and {for this reason}[fn] I cannot come.’ 21 [And][fn] The servant came and reported [[all]][fn] [these things][fn] to his lord. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind [and lame].’[fn] 22 And the servant said [[to him]],[fn] ‘[Lord,][fn] {What}[fn] you commanded has been done, and still there is room.’ 23 And the lord said to {the}[fn] servant, ‘Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you, none of {those} [fn]men who were invited shall taste my dinner.’ [[For many are called, but few are chosen.]]”[fn]

25 And [many][fn] crowds were traveling together [with him],[fn] and he turned and said to them, 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his [own][fn] father and mother, and [[his]][fn] wife and children, and brothers and sisters, yet, even his own life; he cannot be my disciple.

27 “[[And]][fn] Whoever [[therefore]][fn] does not carry his {own}[fn] cross[fn] and follow me, cannot be my disciple.

28 “[For][fn] Which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? 29 Lest ever, {after he has}[fn] laid the foundation {and is not able to finish,}[fn] all who see it {begin to mock him,[fn] 30 saying that}, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish.’

31 “Or what king, going out to meet another king in battle, will not [[immediately]][fn] sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to confront the one coming [against him][fn] with twenty thousand? 32 And if not, while the other is yet a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

33 “[Therefore,][fn] {Any one of you}[fn] who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.

34 “[Therefore][fn] Salt is good; but if [even][fn] the salt becomes foolish, with what will it be seasoned?

35 “Neither into earth nor into dung is it suitable; they throw it out.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
