6 Now it happened {on a Sabbath}[fn] that he was passing through grainfields, and his disciples {were plucking and eating the heads of grain rubbing them in their hands}.[fn] 2 But some of the Pharisees said [[to them]],[fn] “{Why are you}[fn] doing what is not lawful [[to do]][fn] on the Sabbath?”
3 And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he and {those [who were][fn] with him}[fn] were hungry, 4 {[how][fn] he entered the house of God [and took][fn] and}[fn] ate the bread of the Presence, and [[also]][fn] gave it to those with him, which is not lawful to eat except the priests alone?” [[On the same day, seeing someone working on the Sabbath, he said to him, “Man, if you know what you are doing, you are blessed; but if you do not know, you are cursed and a transgressor of the law.”]][fn] 5 And he said to them [[that]],[fn] “The Son of Man is lord [[even]][fn] of the Sabbath.”[fn]
6 {Now [[also]][fn] it happened on another Sabbath that he entered the synagogue [and was teaching].[fn] And there was a man there whose [right][fn] hand was withered}.[fn] 7 [But][fn] The scribes and the Pharisees were watching [him][fn] closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and said to the {man}[fn] [with the withered hand],[fn] “Get up and stand in the middle.”[fn] And he got up and stood.
9 [Therefore][fn] Jesus said to them, “I ask you, {is it}[fn] lawful on the {Sabbath}[fn] to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to {destroy it}?”[fn] [[But they were silent.]][fn] 10 And looking around at them all [[in anger]],[fn] he said to {him},[fn] “Stretch out your hand.” And he {did so},[fn] and his hand was restored [[healthy]][fn] [[as the other]].[fn] [[And he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”]][fn] 11 But they were filled with senselessness and discussed with one another {what they might do to Jesus}.[fn]
12 Now it happened in those days that he went out to the mountain to pray, and he spent the night in prayer [to God].[fn]
13 And when it was day, he {called}[fn] his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles: 14 [[First]][fn] Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John [[his brother, whom he named Boanerges, which is Sons of Thunder,]][fn] and Philip [and Bartholomew],[fn] 15 and Matthew and Thomas [[the one called Didyhmus]][fn] and James the son of Alphaeus and Simon called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who [[also]][fn] became a traitor.
17 And coming down with them, he stood on a level place, and a [large][fn] crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude [of the people][fn] from all Judea and Jerusalem [[and the region beyond]][fn] and {the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon,}[fn] 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were being healed, 19 and all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.
20 And lifting up his eyes to {his}[fn] disciples, he said,
“Blessed are the poor [[in spirit]],[fn] for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 “Blessed are those who hunger now, for you will be satisfied.

22 “Blessed are you when men hate you, and [when][fn] they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full [now],[fn] for you will be hungry.

30 “Give to everyone who asks you, and from the one who takes your things, do not demand them back.

32 “And if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners [[do this;]][fn] love those who love them.
33 “And [indeed][fn] if you do good to those who do good to you, what grace[fn] is that to you? [[For]][fn] Even sinners do the same.
34 “And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what grace [is][fn] to you? [[For]][fn] Even sinners lend to sinners {in order to receive back [an equal amount][fn]}.[fn]
35 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great [[in the heavens]],[fn] and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 “Be merciful [[therefore]],[fn] just as [also][fn] your Father is merciful.
37 “And do not judge, {and you}[fn] will not be judged; and do not condemn, {and you}[fn] will not be {condemned}.[fn] Release, and you will be released.[fn]

39 And he [also][fn] told them a parable: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?

41 “[But][fn] Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log[fn] in your own eye?
42 “How can you say to your brother, ‘[Brother,][fn] Let me take out the speck in your eye,’ {when you yourself do not see}[fn] the log in your own eye?
“Hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
43 “For there is no good tree producing rotten[fn] fruit, nor [again][fn] a rotten tree producing good fruit.
44 “[For][fn] Each tree is known by its [own][fn] fruit; for they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a bramble bush.
