10 “And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of man, it will be forgiven him; {but he who blasphemes}[fn] against the Holy Spirit,[fn] it will not be forgiven. [[Neither in this age nor in the one to come.]][fn]
11 “[But] When they {bring}[fn] you {before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities},[fn] do not worry about how [or what][fn] you should defend or what you should say; 12 for the Holy Spirit[fn] will teach you in that very hour what must be said.”
13 Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” 14 But he said to him, “Man, who appointed me a judge [or divider][fn] [over you]?”[fn]
15 And he said to them, “Watch out and guard against all greed, because [one's][fn] life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.”
16 He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a certain rich man produced plentifully. 17 And he thought to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will gather {all my grain}[fn] [and my goods].[fn] 19 And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods [laid up for many years; rest, eat, drink];[fn] be merry.”’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool, this night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’” 21 [So is the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.][fn]
22 But he said to {his}[fn] disciples, “Therefore, [I say to you,][fn] do not worry about [[your]][fn] life, what you will eat, nor about {the}[fn] body, what you will wear. 23 [For][fn] The life[fn] is more than food, and the body more than clothing.”
24 “Consider the {ravens},[fn] that they neither sow nor reap, for which there is no [storehouse nor][fn] barn, and God feeds {them};[fn] {how much more do you surpass the birds!}[fn] 25 {And which of you [by worrying][fn] can add {a}[fn] cubit to his stature}?[fn] 26 [If then you are not able to do even the least;][fn] And concerning the rest, why do you worry?

28 “But if God so clothes the grass [of the field],[fn] is today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more [[then]][fn] will he clothe you, You of little faith!
29 “And you, do not seek what you will eat {and}[fn] what you will drink, and do not be anxious. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek, but your Father knows that you need [[all]][fn] these things.

32 “Do not fear, little flock, for it {is your Father's good pleasure}[fn] to give you the kingdom.
33 “Sell your possessions and give to charity; make for yourselves purses that do not wear out, an inexhaustible[fn] treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near nor moth destroys;
34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
35 “Let your waists be girded[fn] and your lamps burning; 36 and be like men waiting for their master when he returns from the wedding feast, so that when he comes and knocks, they may immediately open to him.
37 “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, he will gird[fn] himself and have them recline at table [and he will come and serve them].[fn]
38 “{And if in the second or in the third watch he comes and finds them so, [those][fn] [[servants]][fn] they are blessed.}[fn]

45 “But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My lord is taking a long time to come,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 the lord of {that servant}[fn] will come on a day when he does not expect and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two and assign him a place with the unbelievers.
47 “That servant who knew his lord's will and did not[fn] {prepare or do}[fn] according to his will, will be beaten with [many][fn] blows.
48 “But the one who did not know, and did things deserving of blows, will be beaten with few.

49 “I have come to cast fire upon the earth, and what do I desire if it has [already][fn] been kindled.
50 “But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I constrained until it is accomplished?

58 “For as you are going with your adversary to the magistrate, make an effort on the way to be released from him, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison.

12:5, Gehenna: Often translated hell. Gehenna is originally a transliteration of the Hebrew "Valley of Hinnom." This is a valley southwest of Jerusalem, where human sacrifices had once been offered and where garbage from the city was constantly burning. It was known as the valley of slaughter and the place of divine punishment (Jeremiah 19). Later this picture was combined with the idea of God's judgment, and so the notion of a fiery hell developed.
