AICNT LUKE Chapter 18

LUKE 18 ©

18[[There they will be gathered for their terrible fate;]][fn] [He was telling them a parable to the effect that [they][fn] ought][fn] Always pray and do not lose heart; 2[saying,][fn] “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.

3And there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Give me justice against my adversary.’ 4And he {did not want to}[fn] for a [some][fn] time. But after these things, {he said to himself}[fn] , ‘Even if I do not fear God, {nor}[fn] regard men, 5indeed, because this widow causes [me][fn] trouble, I will grant her justice, so that she may not wear me out in the end by her constant coming.’”

6And the Lord said, “[Hear][fn] What the judge of unrighteousness says:[fn] 7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones who cry out [to him][fn] day and night, and is he {slow to respond to them}?[fn] 8I say to you [that][fn] he will bring about their vindication quickly.

“{However},[fn] when the Son of Man comes, will he find the faith on the earth?”

9But he [also][fn] told [this parable][fn] to some who trusted in themselves [that they were righteous,][fn] and despised {others}.[fn]

10“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other [one][fn] a tax collector. 11The Pharisee, standing [by himself][fn], prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’

13[But][fn] The tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘[God,][fn] Be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14I say to you [[that]],[fn] this man went down [to his house][fn] justified, rather than {the other}.[fn]

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

15Now they were [also][fn] bringing {babies}[fn] to him that he might touch them. And when the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. 16But Jesus called [them],[fn] saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom {of God}.[fn]

17“[[For]][fn] Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.”

18And a ruler asked him, [saying,][fn] “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19And {Jesus}[fn] said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.[fn] 20You know the commandments.

[[But he said, “Which ones?” Jesus said,]][fn]

“Do not commit adultery, [Do not murder,][fn] Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and [[your]][fn] mother.”[fn]

21And he said [[to him]],[fn] “All these I have kept from [my][fn] youth.”

22When Jesus heard [these things],[fn] he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in {the heavens};[fn] and come, follow me.”

23But when he heard [[all]][fn] these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

24{But seeing him, Jesus [becoming very distressed],[fn] said},[fn] “How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!

25“[For][fn] It is easier for a camel to {enter}[fn] the eye of a needle than for a rich man [to enter][fn] the kingdom of God.”

26But those who heard said, “And who can be saved?” 27But {he}[fn] said, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

28And Peter said, “Behold, we have left {our own things};[fn] [[and]][fn] we have followed you.”

29And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, [that][fn] there is no one who has left house or {wife or brothers or parents}[fn] or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30who will not receive {many times}[fn] more[fn] in this time, and in the coming age, [[will inherit]][fn] eternal life.”

31Taking the twelve [[disciples]],[fn] {he}[fn] said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32For he will be handed over to the Gentiles,[fn] and will be mocked, [and insulted,][fn] and spat upon. 33And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise again.”

34And they understood none of these things, and {this}[fn] word was hidden from them, and they did not understand the things being said.

35As he approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36Hearing a crowd passing by, he inquired what this might be. 37They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” 38And he cried out, saying, “[Jesus,][fn] Son of David, have mercy on me!”

39But those leading rebuked him, so that he would be silent; but he cried out [more],[fn] “[[Jesus,]][fn] Son of David, have mercy on me!”

40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought [to him].[fn] When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41[[Saying,]][fn] “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, that I may regain my sight.”

42[[And answering,]][fn] {Jesus}[fn] said to him, “Regain your sight; your faith has saved you.” 43And immediately he regained his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave {praise}[fn] to God.
