AICNT LUKE Chapter 19

LUKE 19 ©

19And entering, {he}[fn] passed through Jericho. 2And behold, a man [named][fn] Zacchaeus, and he was a chief tax collector; [and he was][fn] rich. 3And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. 4And having {run ahead}[fn] [to the][fn] front, he climbed up into a sycamore tree in order to see him, for he was about to pass that way. 5And {when he came to the place,}[fn] [Jesus looked up and][fn] [[he saw him and]][fn] he said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” 6And he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. 7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, [saying,][fn] “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”

8And Zacchaeus stood and said to {the Lord},[fn] “Behold, [Lord,][fn] half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”

9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.

10“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

11As they were listening to these things, he added and said a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and they thought that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.

12{He said [therefore],[fn] “A nobleman went into}[fn] a far country to receive [for himself][fn] a kingdom and then return. 13Calling ten {of his}[fn] servants, he gave them ten minas,[fn] and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15And it happened, upon his return after receiving the kingdom, he ordered {those}[fn] servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called [to him][fn] so that he might know what they had done.

16“The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina[fn] has made ten minas.’ 17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’

18“And the {second}[fn] came, [saying, ‘Lord, Your mina has made five minas.’ 19And he said to him, ‘And you are [to become][fn] over five cities.’

20“And the {the other}[fn] came,][fn] saying, ‘Lord, behold, your mina which I had [put away][fn] in a handkerchief; 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.

22“[[But]][fn] He said to him, ‘I will judge by your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a strict man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? 23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and I, coming, would have collected it with interest?’ 24And he said to those standing by, ‘Take [the mina][fn] from him, and {give it}[fn] to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25[And they said to him, ‘[Lord,][fn] He has ten minas!’][fn]

26“[[And he said to them,]][fn] ‘[[For]][fn] I say [to you][fn] [that][fn] to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away [[from him]].[fn]

27“But those enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.” [[And cast out the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.]][fn]

28And having said these things, he went on [ahead],[fn] going up to Jerusalem. 29And it happened, when he approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount [called Olivet],[fn] he sent two of {the}[fn] disciples, 30saying, “Go into the village opposite, in which as you enter you will find a colt [tied, on which no one [of men][fn] has [ever][fn] sat; [and][fn] having untied it, bring it here].[fn] 31And if anyone asks you, [‘Why are you untying it?’][fn] You shall say [[to him]][fn] [[that]] ‘The Lord has need of it.’”

32[[And they departed]][fn] [And those who were sent went away and found it [[standing]][fn] just as he had told them. 33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34But they said, [Because][fn] “The Lord has need of it.”][fn]

35And they brought {it}[fn] [to Jesus],[fn] and throwing their garments on the colt, they set Jesus on it.

36And as he was going, they spread their garments [on the road].[fn]

37As {he was}[fn] [already][fn] approaching the descent of the Mount of Olives, all the multitude [of the disciples][fn] began to rejoice and praise God [with a loud voice][fn] for [all][fn] the {mighty works}[fn] that they had seen, 38saying, “Blessed is {the one coming, the king}[fn] in the name of the Lord; [[Blessed is the king;]][fn] peace in heaven and glory in the highest.” 39And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40And he answered and said [[to them]],[fn] “I say you, [that][fn] if these become silent, the stones will cry out.”

41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42saying, “If you had known on [this day],[fn] even you, the things that make for [[your]][fn] peace! [But now][fn] They are hidden from your eyes. 43For the days will come upon you when your enemies will cast up a trench against you and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44and they will level you to the ground and your children [within you],[fn] and they will not leave one stone upon stone in [[all of]][fn] you, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

45And entering the temple, he began to drive out those who sold [[and those who bought]],[fn] [[and he poured out the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling the doves,]][fn] 46saying to them, “It is written [[that]],[fn] ‘My house will be [[called]][fn] a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”[fn]

47And he was teaching daily [in the temple].[fn] But the chief priests and the scribes sought to destroy him, and the leaders of the people, 48and they could not find what to do [to him],[fn] for all the people were hanging on his words.
