AICNT LUKE Chapter 2

LUKE 2 ©

Now it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This was the {first registration}[fn] when Quirinius was governing Syria. 3{And everyone went to be registered, each to his own city}.[fn]

So Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5[to be registered][fn] with Mary, his {betrothed},[fn] who was pregnant.

And {it came to pass, while they were there},[fn] the days were {fulfilled}[fn] for her to give birth. 7And she gave birth to her [firstborn][fn] son, and she wrapped him up and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

And there were shepherds in the same region, staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And [[behold]][fn] an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory [of the Lord][fn] shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10And {the angel}[fn] said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people, 11for today a Savior has been born to you, who is Christ[fn] the Lord, in the city of David. 12And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths [and lying][fn] in a manger.”

And suddenly there was [with the angel][fn] a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, 14“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace {among men of goodwill}.”[fn]

And it came to pass, as the angels departed from them into heaven, and {the shepherds}[fn] spoke to one another [[saying]],[fn] “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.”

And they came quickly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.

And when they saw it, they understood about the word that was spoken to them concerning {this}[fn] child. 18And all who heard it wondered at the things spoken by the shepherds to them.

But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told to them.

And when eight days were completed for circumcising {him},[fn] his name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.

And when the days of {their purification}[fn] were fulfilled according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, 23just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”[fn] 24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”[fn]

And [behold,][fn] there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child [Jesus],[fn] to do for him according to the custom of the law concerning him, 28he took him up [in {the}[fn] arms][fn] and blessed God and said, 29“Now dismiss your servant,[fn] Master, according to your word in peace; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation, 31which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the nations,[fn] and the glory of your people Israel.”

And {his father}[fn] and {the}[fn] mother marveled at what was said about him. 34And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed; 35and a sword will pierce through your own soul also; so that evil thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”

And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, 37and as a widow {until she was eighty-four}.[fn] She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. 38And coming up at that very hour she [[herself]][fn] gave thanks to {God}[fn] and spoke of him to all who were waiting for {the redemption of} Jerusalem.[fn]

And when they had completed {everything}[fn] according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city of Nazareth. [[As it was said through the prophet, “He will be called a Nazarene.”]][fn]

The child [[Jesus]][fn] grew and became strong [[in spirit]][fn], {filled with}[fn] wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.

And his parents were traveling to Jerusalem every year for the feast of the Passover.

And when he was twelve years old, {they}[fn] went up [[to Jerusalem]][fn] [[having him with them]][fn] according to the custom of the feast [[of Unleavened Bread]].[fn]

And when the days were completed, as they were returning, [Jesus][fn] the boy stayed behind in Jerusalem, and {his parents}[fn] did not know. 44But supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey and sought him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45And not finding [[him]],[fn] they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.

And it happened that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47And all [who heard him][fn] were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48And when they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? [Behold, your father and I,][fn] In distress [[and sorrowful]],[fn] we were seeking you.”

And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in the things[fn] of {my}[fn] Father?” 50And they did not understand the word that he spoke [to them].[fn]

And he went down [with them][fn] [and came][fn] to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and [[with]][fn] men.
