AICNT LUKE Chapter 20

LUKE 20 ©

20And it happened on one of {the}[fn] days while teaching the people in the temple and preaching the good news, the {chief priests}[fn] and the scribes, along with the elders, confronted him. 2And they said [, saying][fn] to him, “[Tell us][fn] By what authority you do these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?”

3And {he}[fn] answered and said to them, “I will also ask you [{a}[fn] question],[fn] and you tell me; 4Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?” 5And they reasoned among themselves, saying [that],[fn] “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say [[to us]],[fn] ‘Why [[therefore]][fn] did you not believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.” 7And they answered that they did not know where it was from. 8And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I say to you by what authority I do these things.”

9[But][fn] He began to tell [[fn]the people] this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to vine-growers and went away for a long time. 10And at the right time, he sent a servant to the vine-growers so that they would give him some of [the fruit][fn] of the vineyard; [but the vine-growers,][fn] they sent him away empty-handed {after beating him}.[fn] 11And he {proceeded to send}[fn] another servant to them; but they also beat [and dishonored][fn] him and sent him away empty-handed. 12And he {proceeded to send}[fn] a third; but they also wounded him and threw him out.

13“And the lord of the vineyard said, ‘[What shall I do?][fn] I will send my beloved son; perhaps [when they see him,][fn] they will respect him.’ 14Seeing [him],[fn] [the vine-growers,][fn] they reasoned [[among themselves]],[fn] saying, ‘This is the heir; [[Come!]][fn] Let us kill him, so that the inheritance may become ours.’ 15And having thrown him out of the vineyard, they killed him.

“What then will the lord of the vineyard do [to them]?[fn] 16He will come and destroy {these}[fn] [vine-growers][fn] and give the vineyard to others.”

{But when they heard this, they said,}[fn] “May it never be!” 17But he, looking at them, said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the cornerstone’?[fn] 18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush him.”

19And the {scribes and the chief priests}[fn] sought to lay hands on him at that very hour, but they feared [the people,][fn] for they knew that he had spoken this parable against them.

20And {they watched him and}[fn] sent spies who pretended to be righteous, in order that they might catch him in a statement, {so as to}[fn] deliver him to the [authority and power][fn] of the governor.

21And they questioned him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you speak [and teach][fn] rightly, and you {do not show partiality},[fn] but teach [the way][fn] of God in truth: 22Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 23But {perceiving}[fn] their {craftiness},[fn] he said to them, [[“Why are you testing me?”]][fn] 24“Show me {a denarius}.[fn] [[And they showed and he said,]][fn] Whose image and inscription does it have?” And [[answering]][fn] they said, “Caesar's.” 25And he said [to them],[fn] “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.”

26And they were not able to grasp {his}[fn] word in front of the people, and marveling at his response, they fell silent.

27Some of the Sadducees, who {deny}[fn] that there is a resurrection, came forward and asked him, 28saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies having {a wife, and this one is childless},[fn] his brother should take the wife [of him][fn] and raise up offspring for his brother.[fn] 29There were seven brothers [[with us]];[fn] and the first, having taken a wife, died childless; 30and the second [[took her as wife, and he died childless,]][fn] 31and the third [took her][fn] [[in the same way]];[fn] [but also][fn] likewise all seven [[also]][fn] left no children [and died].[fn] 32[Later,][fn] [The woman also died.][fn]

33So [the woman],[fn] in the resurrection, whose wife [of them][fn] will she be? For all seven had her as wife.”

34{Jesus}[fn] [[answering]][fn] said to them, “The sons of this age [[are born and they give birth,]][fn] they marry and are given in marriage, 35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36for they {cannot die anymore},[fn] for they are like angels [and are sons][fn] of God, being sons of the resurrection.

37“{But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where}[fn] he calls the Lord the God of Abraham, and [the God][fn] of Isaac[fn] [, and [the God][fn] of Jacob].[fn] 38[Now][fn] He is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.”

39Some of the scribes answered [[to him]],[fn] “Teacher, you have spoken well.” 40{For}[fn] they no longer dared to ask him any question.

41He said to them, “How can {they}[fn] say that the Christ is David's son? 42{For}[fn] David himself says in the Book of Psalms, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, 43until I {make your enemies a footstool for}[fn] your feet.”’[fn] 44David [thus][fn] calls him Lord; [so][fn] how is he his son?”

45In the hearing of all the people he said to {the}[fn] disciples, 46“Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets; 47those who devour widows' houses; [and][fn] for a show make long prayers; they will receive the greater condemnation.”
