Luke 3:21–22

Luke 4:1–13

1:9 Yeshua gets immersed and then tempted

(Mat. 3:13–4:11, Luke 3:21-22)

9(Figure skipped)Then one day Yeshua came from Nazareth in the Galilee region, and he got immersed in the Yordan river by Yohan. 10As Yeshua came up out of the water, he saw the sky being opened up, and God’s spirit coming down on him like a dove. 11[ref]And a voice came from the sky saying, “You are my son who I love and am pleased with.”

12And then the spirit sent him into the wilderness 13where he was tested by Satan for forty days. He was out there with the wild animals, but messengers waited on him there.

3:13 Yeshua gets immersed in the river

(Mark 1:9-11, Luke 3:21-22)

13Then Yeshua came down from Galilee to Yohan at the Yordan River to be immersed by him. 14But Yohan refused, saying, “It’s me who needs to be immersed by you, and yet you’re coming to me?”

15Just allow it,answered Yeshua, “because we need to do what righteousness requires.” So Yohan immersed him.

16As Yeshua came up out of the water after being immersed, the sky was opened up and he saw God’s spirit coming down like a dove and landing on him. 17[ref]Then, wow, a voice came from the sky and said, “This is my son that I love and I’m pleased with.”

4:0 Yeshua is tempted by the devil

(Mark 1:12-13, Luke 4:1-13)

4[ref]Then Yeshua was taken by the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2As he’d been fasting for forty days (and nights), he was getting hungry, 3and the tempter approached him and asked, “If you’re God’s son, command some of these stones to turn into buns.”

4[ref]But Yeshua answered, “It’s written in the scriptures that it’s not just food that a person needs to live, but also all of God’s message.

5Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and stood him on the highest point of the temple 6[ref]and told him, “Throw yourself down if you’re God’s son, because it’s written in the scriptures that God will command his messengers to look after you and to carry you in their arms so that you won’t bash your foot on a rock.”

7[ref]But it’s also written,Yeshua answered, “that you shouldn’t test God your master.

8Then the devil took him to a very high mountains and showed him all the countries of the world with all their splendour, 9then told him, “I’ll give all of these to you if you get down and prostrate yourself to me.”

10[ref]Go away, Satan,Yeshua replied, “because it’s written in the scriptures that you should worship God your master and should only serve him.

11Then the devil left him and God’s messengers came and looked after him.

3:21 Yeshua’s double baptism

(Mark 1:9-11, Mat. 3:13-17)

21One day along with all the other people being immersed, Yeshua had come and been immersed, and while he prayed, the sky opened up 22[ref]and the holy spirit came down onto him in the bodily form of a dove, and a voice came from the sky, “You are my son that I love and take pleasure in.”

4:1 Yeshua is tested by the devil

(Mark 1:12-13, Mat. 4:1-11)

4Then Yeshua, full of the holy spirit, returned from the Yordan region and was led into the wilderness by the spirit 2where he was tested by the devil for forty days. He didn’t eat anything during that time, and was hungry at the end.

3So the devil told him, “If you’re God’s son, just turn this stone into bread.”

4[ref]It’s been written,Yeshua replied, “that people don’t live just on food.

5Then the devil brought him up to a high point and in just a moment of time, showed him the vista of all the kingdoms of the world, 6and he said, “I’ll give you this entire domain and the status of these kingdoms because it’s been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want, 7so just bow down in front of me and it’ll all be yours.”

8[ref]It’s been written,Yeshua answered, “that we should only bow down to Yahweh our God and only serve him.

9Then the devil led him to Yerusalem and they stood on the highest part of the temple, where he told him, “If you’re God’s son, throw yourself down from here, 10[ref]because it’s written that God will command his messengers to guard you 11and they will carry you in their hands, so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.”

12[ref]It’s been written,Yeshua responded, “that we shouldn’t test Yahweh our God.

13So after completing every temptation, the devil withdrew from him for a time.
