ULT For Christ also suffered once for sins—righteous on behalf of unrighteous—so that he might bring you to God, having indeed been killed in flesh, but having been made alive in spirit,
UST This is true because the Messiah also suffered. He suffered one time for the sake of other people’s sins. He was a righteous person who died for the benefit of unrighteous people. He died in order to enable you to be with God. Although people killed him, God’s Spirit caused him to become alive again.

MSG (13-18)If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They’ll end up realizing that they’re the ones who need a bath. It’s better to suffer for doing good, if that’s what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That’s what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others’ sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God.

FBV Jesus died because of sins, once and for all, the one who is completely true and good and right died for those who are bad,[fn] so that he could bring you to God. He was put to death in the body, but he came to life in the spirit.
3:18 Literally, “the right for the unright.” In this verse the inevitable results of sin are made clear through the death of Jesus. He experienced the consequences of sin in the most dramatic and conclusive way possible, and also proved it was not God who kills, but that sin itself brings its inevitable fatal result (see Romans 6:23).

3:18 He suffered physical death (literally death in the flesh), but he was raised to life in the Spirit (or in spirit): Flesh and spirit are often contrasted (e.g., Rom 7:5-6; 8:2-11). Here, flesh stands for ordinary human life; the Spirit stands for the new realm inaugurated through Christ’s death and resurrection. Christ died in the old realm and came to life in the new realm.
Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν
for /the/_sins
Here, sins implies the sins of people other than Jesus, because Jesus never sinned. If it would be helpful to your readers, you could express this explicitly. Alternate translation: [for the sake of the sins of others]
Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ
/having_been/_put_to_death on_one_hand ˱in˲_/the/_flesh
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [people having indeed killed him in the flesh]
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy
θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ
/having_been/_put_to_death on_one_hand ˱in˲_/the/_flesh
Here, flesh refers to Christ’s body, which was made of flesh. Peter is saying that the body of Christ was killed. If this might confuse your readers, you could express the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: [having indeed been killed physically]
Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive
ζῳοποιηθεὶς & πνεύματι
/having_been/_given_life & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἀπέθανεν δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ Θεῷ θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ ζῳοποιηθεὶς δὲ Πνεύματι)
If your language does not use the passive form in this way, you can state this in active form or in another way that is natural in your language. Alternate translation: [God’s spirit having made him alive] or [God having made him alive in the spirit]
Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit
ζῳοποιηθεὶς & πνεύματι
/having_been/_given_life & (Some words not found in SR-GNT: ὅτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἀπέθανεν δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ Θεῷ θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ ζῳοποιηθεὶς δὲ Πνεύματι)
Here, spirit could refer to: (1) the Holy Spirit, in which case this phrase would indicate the means by which Jesus was made alive. Alternate translation: [having been made him alive by the Spirit] (2) Jesus’ spiritual existence, in which case this phrase would be referring to the spiritual realm that is in contrast to the physical realm referred to with the phrase “in the flesh.” Alternate translation: [having been made alive spiritually] or [having been made alive in the spiritual realm]
