Paul, an apostle of {Christ[fn] Jesus}[fn] by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus.

To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, 4longing to see you, remembering your tears, so that I may be filled with joy, 5{having been}[fn] reminded of the sincere faith that is in you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced is in you as well.

For this reason, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control.

Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9who saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10but has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior {Christ Jesus},[fn] who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11for which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher [[of the Gentiles]],[fn] 12for which reason I also suffer these things.

But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard my deposit[fn] until that day.

Hold the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good deposit[fn] through the Holy Spirit[fn] in us.

You know this, that all who are in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are {Phygelus}[fn] and Hermogenes. 16May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chains, 17but when he arrived in Rome, he diligently searched for me and found me. 18May the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that day! And you know very well how much service he rendered in Ephesus.
