ULT 1 CHR Chapter 19

1 CHR 19 ©

19And it happened after this that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in place of him. 2And David said, “I will do kindness with Hanun, the son of Nahash, for his father did kindness with me.” And David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And the servants of David came to the land of the sons of Ammon, to Hanun, to console him 3And the commanders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, “In your eyes, is David honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Is it not in order to explore and to overthrow and to spy on the land that his servants have come to you?” 4So Hanun took the servants of David, and he shaved them, and he cut their garments in the middle, to the buttocks, and he sent them away, 5and they went. And they declared to David concerning the men, and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, “Stay in Jericho until when your beards grow, then return.”

6And the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves stink with David. So Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent 1,000 kikkars of silver to hire chariots and horsemen for themselves from Aram Naharaim and from Aram Maacah and from Zobah. 7And they hired for themselves 32,000 chariots and the king of Maacah and his people. And they came, and they encamped to the face of Medeba. And the sons of Ammon assembled themselves from their cities, and they came for battle. 8And David heard, and he sent Joab and all of the army, the warriors. 9And the sons of Ammon came out, and they arrayed for battle at the entrance of the city. And the kings who came were by themselves in the field.

10And Joab saw that the faces of the battle were against him before and behind, and he chose from all of the chosen of Israel, and he arrayed them to meet Aram. 11And he put the rest of the people in the hand of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them to meet the sons of Ammon. 12And he said, “If Aram is stronger than me, then you shall be to me for salvation, but if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I will save you. 13Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves for the sake of our people and for the sake of the cities of our God. And may Yahweh do the good in his eyes.” 14Then Joab and the people who were with him approached to the face of Aram for battle, and they fled from his face. 15And the sons of Ammon saw that Aram had fled, and they fled, they also, from the face of Abishai his brother. And they came to the city, and Joab came to Jerusalem.

16And Aram saw that they had been defeated to the face of Israel. And they sent messengers, and they brought Aram that was from beyond the River and Shophach, the commander of the army of Hadadezer, to their faces. 17And it was declared to David, and he assembled all of Israel, and he crossed the Jordan, and he came to Helam, and he arrayed against them. And David arrayed to meet Aram in battle, and they fought with him. 18And Aram fled from the face of Israel, and David killed from Aram 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 men on foot. And he killed Shobach, the commander of the army. 19And the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been struck to the face of Israel, and they made peace with David, and they served him. And Aram was not willing to save the sons of Ammon anymore.
