5And the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel—for he was the firstborn, but when he defiled the couches of his father, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph, the son of Israel, so he is not enrolled according to the birthright; 2though Judah was great among his brothers, and a leader was from him, yet the birthright was to Joseph—3the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. 4The sons of Joel: Shemaiah his son, Gog his son, Shimei his son, 5Micah, his son, Reaiah, his son, Baal, his son, 6Beerah, his son, whom Tiglath Pileser, the king of Assyria, exiled. 18The sons of Reuben and the Gadites and half of the tribe of Manasseh, from sons of valor, men, carriers of the shield and sword and treaders of the bow and taught of battle, were 44,760 going out as an army. 19And they made war with the Hagrites and Jetur and Naphish and Nodab. 20And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites were given into their hand and all who were with them. For they cried out to God in the battle, and he was entreated by them, for they trusted in him. 21And they captured their livestock: their camels, 50,000, and sheep, 250,000, and donkeys, 2,000, and soul of man, 100,000. 22For many fell slain, for the battle was from God. And they dwelled in place of them until the exile.

23And the sons of half of the tribe of Manasseh dwelled in the land from Bashan unto Baal Hermon and Senir and Mount Hermon. They, they multiplied. 24And these were the heads of the house of their fathers, even Epher and Ishi and Eliel and Azriel and Jeremiah and Hodaviah and Jahdiel, men, warriors of strength, men of names, heads of the house of their fathers.

25But they transgressed against the God of their fathers, and they whored after the gods of the peoples of the land whom God had destroyed from their faces. 26So the God of Israel awakened the spirit of Pul, the king of Assyria and the spirit of Tiglath Pileser, the king of Assyria. And he exiled them, namely the Reubenites and the Gadites and half of the tribe of Manasseh. And he brought them to Halah and Habor and Hara and the river of Gozan unto this day.

10Now the Philistines fought with Israel, and the men of Israel fled from the face of the Philistines, and they fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2And the Philistines pursued after Saul and after his sons. And the Philistines struck Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi Shua, the sons of Saul. 3And the battle was heavy against Saul. And the shooters with the bow found him. And he writhed from the shooters. 4And Saul said to the carrier of his equipment, “Draw your sword and stab me with it, lest these uncircumcised ones come and abuse me.” But the carrier of his equipment was not willing, for he feared greatly. So Saul took the sword and fell on it. 5And the carrier of his equipment saw that Saul had died, so he fell, he also, on his sword, and he died. 6So Saul died, and three of his sons, even all of his house, died together.

7And all of the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled and that Saul and his sons had died. And they abandoned their cities and fled. And they buried their bones under the oak tree in Jabesh. And they fasted seven days.

13And Saul died because of his transgression that he transgressed against Yahweh, because of the word of Yahweh that he did not keep, and also for having inquired of a ritual pit for seeking. 14For he did not seek Yahweh, so he killed him. And he turned the kingdom to David, the son of Jesse.

11And all of Israel gathered to David at Hebron, saying, “Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. 2Both yesterday and the third day, even when Saul was king, you were bringing out and bringing in Israel. And Yahweh your God said to you, ‘You, you will shepherd my people Israel, and you, you will become the ruler over my people Israel.’ ” 3And all of the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David cut for them a covenant in Hebron to the face of Yahweh. And they anointed David as king over Israel, according to the word of Yahweh by the hand of Samuel.

4And David and all of Israel went to Jerusalem, that is, Jebus. And the Jebusite, the dwellers of the land, were there. 5And the dwellers of Jebus said to David, “You will not come here.” But David captured the stronghold of Zion, that is, the City of David. 6And David said, “Anyone striking the Jebusite first will become the head and the chief. And Joab, the son of Zeruiah, went up first, and he became the head. 7And David dwelled in the stronghold, therefore they called to it the City of David. 8And he built the city from around, from the Millo and to around. And Joab restored the rest of the city. 9And David went, going and becoming great, and Yahweh of Armies was with him.

He was among the three warriors. 13He was with David at Pas Dammim. Now the Philistines had assembled themselves there for battle, and a portion of the field was full of barley. And the people fled from the face of the Philistines. 14But they stationed themselves in the midst of the portion, and they delivered it, and they struck the Philistines. And Yahweh saved a great salvation.

15And three from the head Thirty went down to the rock, to David, to the cave of Adullam. And the camp of Philistines encamped in the Valley of the Raphaites. 16And David was then in the stronghold, and a garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 17And David desired, and he said, “Who will give me waters from the well of Bethlehem that is at the gate?” 18And the three broke through the camp of the Philistines, and they drew waters from the well of Bethlehem that is at the gate. And they carried them away and brought them to David. But David was not willing to drink them, and he poured them out to Yahweh. 19And he said, “Profane to me from God from doing this! Shall I drink the blood of these men with their lives? For they brought them with their lives.” And he was not willing to drink them. The three warriors did these things.

20And Abishai, the brother of Joab, he was the head of the Three, and he was awakening his spear against 300, slain. And to him was a name among the Three. 21From the Three, in the second, he was honored. And he became a commander to them. But he did not come to the Three.

22Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was a son of a man of valor, many of deeds, from Kabzeel. He, he struck the two Ariel of Moab. And he, he went down and struck a lion in the midst of the pit on a day of snow. 23And he, he struck a man of Egypt, a man of measure, five by the cubit. Now in the hand of the Egyptian was a spear like a beam of weavers, and he went down against him with a staff. But he seized the spear from the hand of the Egyptian, and he killed him with his spear. 24Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, did these things. And to him was a name among the three warriors. 25More than the Thirty, behold him being honored, him, but to the Three he did not come. And David put him over his bodyguard.

26And the warriors of valors were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo from Bethlehem, 27Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite, 28Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite, 29Sibbecai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite, 30Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite, 31Ithai the son of Ribai from Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite, 32Hurai from the valleys of Gaash, Abiel the Arbathite, 33Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite, 34the sons of Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite, 35Ahiam the son of Sachar the Hararite, Eliphal the son of Ur, 36Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite, 37Hezro the Carmelite, Naarai the son of Ezbai, 38Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri, 39Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, the carrier of the equipment of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, 40Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 41Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai, 42Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a head of the Reubenite, and 30 with him, 43Hanan the son of Maacah and Joshaphat the Mithnite, 44Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite, 45Jediael the son of Shimri, and Joha his brother the Tizite, 46Eliel the Mahavite and Jeribai and Joshaviah the sons of Elnaam, and Ithmah the Moabite, 47Eliel and Obed and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

But if to betray me to my adversaries, with no violence in my palms, may the God of our fathers see and judge.” 18And the Spirit clothed Amasai, the head of the 30: “For you, David, and with you, son of Jesse! Peace, peace to you, and peace to the one helping you, for your God helps you!” And David accepted them, and he appointed them as heads of a troop.

19And some from Manasseh fell to David when he came with the Philistines to battle against Saul. But they did not help them, for by counsel, the lords of the Philistines sent him away, saying, “By our heads, he will fall to his master Saul.” 20When he went to Ziklag, they fell to him from Manasseh: Adnah and Jozabad and Jediael and Michael and Jozabad and Elihu and Zillethai, heads of thousands that were to Manasseh. 21And they, they helped with David against the troop, for all of them were warriors of valor, and they were commanders in the army. 22For at the time of day by day, they were coming to David to help him, until to a great camp, like the camp of God.

38All of these men of battle, keepers of the array, came with a whole heart to Hebron to make David king over all of Israel. And also all of the rest of Israel had one heart to make David king. 39And they were there with David three days eating and drinking, for their brothers had prepared for them. 40And also the ones near to them, unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, were bringing bread on donkeys and on camels and on mules and on oxen: food of flour, fig cakes and raisins cakes and wine and oil and oxen and sheep in abundance, for joy was in Israel.

13And David consulted with the commanders of thousands and hundreds, with every leader. 2And David said to all of the assembly of Israel, “If it is good to you and from Yahweh our God, let us spread, let us send to our remaining brothers in all of the lands of Israel, and with them the priests and the Levites in the cities of their pasturelands, and let them be gathered to us. 3And let us return the Box of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” 4And all of the assembly said to do thus, for the matter was right in the eyes of all of the people. 5And David assembled all of Israel, from Shihor of Egypt and unto Lebo Hamath, to bring the Box of God from Kiriath Jearim. 6And David went up, and all of Israel, to Baalah, to Kiriath Jearim, which is to Judah, to bring up from there the Box of God, Yahweh, sitter of the cherubs, which is called by the name. 7And they made the Box of God ride on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart. 8And David and all of Israel were rejoicing to the face of God with all might and with songs and with harps and with lyres and with tambourines and with cymbals and with trumpets.

9And they came to the threshing floor of Chidon, and Uzzah sent out his hand to hold the Box, for the oxen stumbled. 10And the nose of Yahweh burned against Uzzah, and he struck him because he had sent his hand upon the Box. And he died there to the face of God. 11And it burned to David because Yahweh had broken out a breaking out against Uzzah. And he called to that place Perez Uzzah, to this day. 12And David feared God on that day, saying, “How shall I bring the Box of God to me?” 13So David did not turn the Box to himself, to the city of David, but he turned it aside to the house of Obed Edom the Gittite. 14And the Box of God dwelled with the house of Obed Edom in his house three months. And Yahweh blessed the house of Obed Edom and all that was to him.

14And Hiram, the king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, and trees of cedar and craftsmen of a wall and craftsmen of wood to build a house for him. 2Then David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, that his kingdom had been lifted to the height for the sake of his people Israel.

3And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. 4And these are the names of the ones born who were to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, Nathan and Solomon 5and Ibhar and Elishua and Elpelet, 6and Nogah and Nepheg and Japhia 7and Elishama and Beeliada and Eliphelet.

8Now the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king over all of Israel, and all of the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard, and he went out to their faces. 9And the Philistines came, and they spread out in the Valley of the Rephaim. 10Then David asked God, saying, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? And will you give them into my hand?” And Yahweh said to him, “Go up, for I will give them into your hand.” 11And they went up to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there. And David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand like the breaking through of waters.” Therefore they call the name of that place Baal Perazim. 12And they abandoned their gods there, and David spoke, and they were burned with fire.

13And the Philistines added again, and they spread out in the valley. 14And David asked God again. And God said to him, “Do not go up after them; circle around from upon them and come at them from opposite the balsam trees. 15And it will be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you shall go out in battle, for God has gone out to your face to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 16And David did according to what God had commanded. And he struck the camp of the Philistines, from Gibeon and unto Gezer. 17And the name of David went out into all of the lands, and Yahweh put the fear of him on all of the nations.

15And he made houses for himself in the City of David. And he prepared a place for the Box of God, and he stretched out a tent for it. 2Then David said, “One is not to carry the Box of God except the Levites. For Yahweh chose them to carry the Box of Yahweh and to serve him forever.” 3And David assembled all of Israel to Jerusalem to bring up the Box of Yahweh to its place, which he had prepared for it. 4And David assembled the sons of Aaron and the Levites. 5Of the sons of Kohath, Uriel, the chief, and his brothers, 120. 6Of the sons of Merari, Asaiah, the chief, and his brothers, 220. 7Of the sons of Gershom, Joel, the chief, and his brothers, 130. 8Of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah, the chief, and his brothers, 200. 9Of the sons of Hebron, Eliel, the chief, and his brothers, 80. 10Of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab, the chief, and his brothers, 112. 11And David called for Zadok and for Abiathar, the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah and Eliel and Amminadab. 12And he said to them, “You are the heads of the fathers of the Levites. Consecrate yourselves, you and your brothers, and bring up the Box of Yahweh, the God of Israel, to where I have prepared for it. 13For because at the first it was not you, Yahweh our God broke out against us, for we did not seek him according to the ordinance.” 14And the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the Box of Yahweh, the God of Israel. 15And the sons of Levi carried the Box of God according to what Moses had commanded, according to the word of Yahweh, on their shoulders, with poles on them.

16And David said to the chiefs of the Levites to station their brothers, the singers, with instruments of song, lyres and harps and cymbals, playing to raise a sound of rejoicing. 17And the Levites stationed Heman, the son of Joel, and from his brothers, Asaph, the son of Berechiah, and from the sons of Merari, their brothers, Ethan, the son of Kushaiah, 18and with them, their brothers, the seconds: Zechariah, Ben and Jaaziel and Shemiramoth and Jehiel and Unni, Eliab and Benaiah and Maaseiah and Mattithiah and Eliphelehu and Mikneiah and Obed Edom and Jeiel, the gatekeepers. 19And the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, with bronze cymbals to make heard. 20And Zechariah and Aziel and Shemiramoth and Jehiel and Unni and Eliab and Maaseiah and Benaiah with lyres, according to Alamoth. 21And Mattithiah and Eliphelehu and Mikneiah,and Obed Edom and Jeiel and Azaziah with lyres, to lead according to Sheminith. 22And Kenaniah, the chief of the Levites, in lifting up, to instruct in lifting up, for he was understanding. 23And Berechiah and Elkanah were keepers for the Box. 24And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethanel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, were blowing trumpets to the face of the Box of God. And Obed Edom and Jehiah were keepers for the Box.

25And it happened that David and the elders of Israel and the commanders of thousands were going to bring up the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh from the house of Obed Edom with rejoicing. 26And it happened, when God helped the Levites carrying the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh, that they sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams. 27And David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, and all of the Levites carrying the Box and the singers and Kenaniah, the chief of the lifting up of the singers. And an ephod of linen was on David. 28And all of Israel was bringing up the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh with shouting and with the sound of the shofar and with trumpets and with cymbals, playing on lyres and harps.

29And it happened that the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh was coming to the city of David, and Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down through a window. And she saw King David dancing and celebrating. And she despised him in her heart.

16And they brought in the Box of God, and they placed it in the midst of the tent that David had stretched out for it. And they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings to the face of God. 2And David finished offering the burnt offering and the peace offerings, and he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh. 3And he distributed to each man of Israel, from man and to woman, to a man a loaf of bread and a date cake and a raisin cake.

4And he appointed to the face of the Box of Yahweh from the Levites as ministering ones and to make one remember and to thank and to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel. 5Asaph, the head, and Zechariah, his second; Jeiel and Shemiramoth and Jehiel and Mattithiah and Eliab and Benaiah and Obed Edom and Jeiel with instruments of lyres and harps, and Asaph playing on cymbals, 6and Benaiah and Jahaziel, the priests, with trumpets continually to the face of the Box of the Covenant of God.

7On that day David then first appointed to thank Yahweh by the hand of Asaph and his brothers:

8Give thanks to Yahweh, call on his name;

make known his deeds among the peoples!

9Sing to him, make music to him;

meditate on all of his wonderful doings.

10Glory in the name of his holiness;

let the heart of the seekers of Yahweh rejoice.

11Seek Yahweh and his strength;

search for his face continually.

12Remember his wonderful doings that he has done,

his miracles and the judgments of his mouth,

13seed of Israel his servant,

sons of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14He is Yahweh, our God;

his judgments are in all of the earth.

15Remember his covenant forever,

the word he commanded, for a thousand generations,

16which he cut with Abraham,

and his oath to Isaac.

17And he confirmed it to Jacob as a statute,

to Israel, as a covenant forever,

18saying, “I will give to you the land of Canaan

as the portion of your inheritance,”

19when you were few in number,

according to a little, and sojourners in it.

20And they wandered from nation to nation,

and from a kingdom to another people.

21He did not allow a man to oppress them;

and he rebuked kings because of them:

22“May you not touch my anointed ones,

and may you not harm my prophets.”

23Sing to Yahweh, all of the earth;

announce his salvation from day to day.

24Recount his glory among the nations,

his wonderful doings, among all of the peoples.

25For Yahweh is great and is to be praised much,

and he is to be feared above all gods.

26For all of the gods of the peoples are idols,

but Yahweh made the heavens.

27Splendor and majesty are to his face;

strength and joy are in his place.

28Ascribe to Yahweh, clans of the peoples,

ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength!

29Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of his name;

bring an offering and come to his face;

worship Yahweh in the splendor of holiness.

30Tremble from his face, all of the earth.

Indeed, the world is established; it will not be shaken.

31Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad,

and let them say among the nations, “Yahweh reigns!”

32Let the sea roar and its fullness;

let the field rejoice and all that is in it.

33Then let the trees of the forest shout joyfully from to the face of Yahweh,

for he is coming to judge the earth.

34Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good,

for his covenant faithfulness is to forever.

35And say, “Save us, God of our salvation,

and gather us and deliver us from the nations,

to give thanks to the name of your holiness,

to glory ourselves in your praise.”

36Blessed be Yahweh, the God of Israel,

from everlasting and to everlasting.

And all of the people said, “Amen,” and they praised Yahweh.

37And he left Asaph and his brothers there to the face of the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh to minister to the face of the Box continually, according to the matter of a day in its day, 38and Obed Edom and their brothers, 68, and Obed Edom the son of Jeduthun, and Hosah, were gatekeepers, 39and Zadok, the priest, and his brothers, the priests, to the face of the tabernacle of Yahweh at the high place that was in Gibeon 40to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh on the altar of burnt offering continually, by morning and by evening, even according to everything written in the law of Yahweh that he commanded to Israel. 41And with them, Heman and Jeduthun and the rest of the chosen who were designated by names to give thanks to Yahweh, “for his covenant faithfulness is to forever.” 42And with them, Heman and Jeduthun to be making heard trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music of God, and the sons of Jeduthun for the gate. 43And all of the people went, a man to his house, and David returned to bless his house.

17And it happened, when David had dwelled in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, “Behold, I, I am dwelling in a house of cedars, but the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh is under curtains.” 2And Nathan said to David, “All that is in your heart, do, for God is with you.” 3But it happened in that night that the word of God was to Nathan, saying, 4“Go, and you shall say to David my servant, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You, you shall not build for me a house for dwelling. 5for I have not dwelled in a house from the day that I brought up Israel until this day, but I have been from tent to tent, and from a tabernacle. 6In any place where I went about with all of Israel, did I speak a word with one of the scepters of Israel whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, ‘Why have you not built for me a house of cedars’?” ’

7And now, thus you shall say to my servant, to David, ‘Thus says Yahweh of Armies, “I, I took you from the pasture, from after the flock, to be a leader over my people Israel. 8And I have been with you in every place where you have gone, and I have cut off all of your enemies from your face. And I will make a name for you like the name of the great who have been on the earth. 9And I have established a place for my people Israel, and I will plant him that he may dwell under him, and he will not tremble anymore. And the sons of wickedness will not continue to afflict him as at the first, 10and from the days when I commanded judges over my people Israel. And I will humble all of your enemies. And I declare to you that Yahweh will build a house for you. 11And it will be, when your days are full to go with your fathers, then I will raise up after you your seed who will be from your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12He, he will build a house for me, and I will establish his throne to forever. 13I, I will be a father to him, and he, he will be a son to me. And I will not turn away my covenant faithfulness from with him as I turned it away from him who was to your face. 14And I will station him in my house and in my kingdom to forever, and his throne will be established to forever.’ ” 15According to all of these words and according to all of this vision, thus Nathan spoke to David.

16And King David came and sat to the face of Yahweh, and he said, “Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me to here? 17And this was small in your eyes, God, for you have spoken regarding the house of your servant to afar, and you have regarded me according to the rank of a man of ascent, Yahweh God. 18What shall David add more to you about honoring your servant? For you, you know your servant. 19Yahweh, for the sake of your servant and according to your heart, you have done all of this greatness, to make known all of the greatnesses. 20Yahweh, there is none like you and no God except you, in all that we have heard with our ears. 21And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on the earth whose God went to redeem for himself a people, to make for himself a great and feared name, to dispossess nations from the face of your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22And you established your people Israel for yourself as a people to forever, and you, Yahweh, you became God to them. 23And now, Yahweh, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, may it be confirmed to forever, and do just as you have spoken. 24And may it be confirmed, and may your name be great to forever, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, is God to Israel,’ and may the house of David your servant be established to your face. 25For you, my God, have uncovered the ear of your servant, to build a house for him. Therefore your servant has found to pray to your face. 26And now, Yahweh, you are he, God, and you have spoken this good concerning your servant. 27And now, you have decided to bless the house of your servant, to be to your face forever. For you, Yahweh, you have blessed, so it will be blessed forever.”

18And it happened after this that David struck the Philistines, and he subdued them. And he took Gath and its daughters from the hand of the Philistines. 2And he struck Moab, and Moab became servants to David, lifters of tribute.

3And David struck Hadadezer, the king of Zobah Hamath, when he went to establish his hand at the Euphrates River. 4And David captured from him 1,000 chariots, and 7,000 horsemen and 20,000 men on foot. And David hamstrung all of the chariots, but he left from him 100 chariots.

5And Aram of Damascus came to help Hadadezer the king of Zobah. And David struck 22,000 men among Aram. 6And David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and Aram became servants to David, lifters of tribute. And Yahweh saved David in every place where he went. 7And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and he brought them to Jerusalem. 8And from Tibhath and from Kun, cities of Hadadezer, David took very much bronze. With it, Solomon made the sea of bronze and the pillars and the vessels of bronze.

9And Tou, the king of Hamath, heard that David had struck all of the army of Hadadezer, the king of Zobah. 10And he sent Hadoram his son to King David to ask him for peace and to bless him because he had fought with Hadadezer and had struck him. For Tou had been a man of war with Hadadezer. And all of the vessels of gold and silver and bronze, 11King David also consecrated them to Yahweh with the silver and the gold that he had lifted from all of the nations, from Edom and from Moab and from the sons of Ammon and from the Philistines and from Amalek.

12And Abishai, the son of Zeruiah, struck Edom in the Valley of Salt, 18,000. 13And he put garrisons in Edom, and all of Edom became servants to David. And Yahweh saved David in every place where he went.

14And David reigned over all of Israel. And it happened that he was doing judgment and righteousness for all of his people. 15And Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was over the army, and Jehoshaphat, the son of Ahilud, was the recorder. 16And Zadok, the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, were priests, and Shavasha was the scribe. 17And Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were heads at the hand of the king.

19And it happened after this that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, died, and his son reigned in place of him. 2And David said, “I will do kindness with Hanun, the son of Nahash, for his father did kindness with me.” And David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And the servants of David came to the land of the sons of Ammon, to Hanun, to console him 3And the commanders of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun, “In your eyes, is David honoring your father because he has sent comforters to you? Is it not in order to explore and to overthrow and to spy on the land that his servants have come to you?” 4So Hanun took the servants of David, and he shaved them, and he cut their garments in the middle, to the buttocks, and he sent them away, 5and they went. And they declared to David concerning the men, and he sent to meet them, for the men were greatly humiliated. And the king said, “Stay in Jericho until when your beards grow, then return.”

6And the sons of Ammon saw that they had made themselves stink with David. So Hanun and the sons of Ammon sent 1,000 kikkars of silver to hire chariots and horsemen for themselves from Aram Naharaim and from Aram Maacah and from Zobah. 7And they hired for themselves 32,000 chariots and the king of Maacah and his people. And they came, and they encamped to the face of Medeba. And the sons of Ammon assembled themselves from their cities, and they came for battle. 8And David heard, and he sent Joab and all of the army, the warriors. 9And the sons of Ammon came out, and they arrayed for battle at the entrance of the city. And the kings who came were by themselves in the field.

10And Joab saw that the faces of the battle were against him before and behind, and he chose from all of the chosen of Israel, and he arrayed them to meet Aram. 11And he put the rest of the people in the hand of Abishai his brother, and he arrayed them to meet the sons of Ammon. 12And he said, “If Aram is stronger than me, then you shall be to me for salvation, but if the sons of Ammon are stronger than you, then I will save you. 13Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves for the sake of our people and for the sake of the cities of our God. And may Yahweh do the good in his eyes.” 14Then Joab and the people who were with him approached to the face of Aram for battle, and they fled from his face. 15And the sons of Ammon saw that Aram had fled, and they fled, they also, from the face of Abishai his brother. And they came to the city, and Joab came to Jerusalem.

16And Aram saw that they had been defeated to the face of Israel. And they sent messengers, and they brought Aram that was from beyond the River and Shophach, the commander of the army of Hadadezer, to their faces. 17And it was declared to David, and he assembled all of Israel, and he crossed the Jordan, and he came to Helam, and he arrayed against them. And David arrayed to meet Aram in battle, and they fought with him. 18And Aram fled from the face of Israel, and David killed from Aram 7,000 charioteers and 40,000 men on foot. And he killed Shobach, the commander of the army. 19And the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been struck to the face of Israel, and they made peace with David, and they served him. And Aram was not willing to save the sons of Ammon anymore.

20And it happened at the time of the return of the year, the time of the going out of kings, that Joab led the might of the army, and he destroyed the land of the sons of Ammon, and he came and besieged against Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah, and he tore it down. 2And David took the crown of their king from upon his head, and he found it, the weight, a kikkar of gold, and in it a precious stone, and it was on the head of David. And he brought out the plunder of the city, being very great. 3And he brought out the people who were in it, and one sawed with the saw and with picks of iron and with saws. And thus David did to all of the cities of the sons of Ammon. And David and all of the people returned to Jerusalem.

4And it happened after this that battle arose at Gezer with the Philistines. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite struck Saph, from the children of the Raphaites, and they were subdued. 5And there was battle again with the Philistines. And Elhanan, the son of Jair, struck Lahmi, the brother of Goliath the Gittite, and the wood of his spear was like a beam of weavers. 6And there was battle again at Gath, and there was a man of stature, and his digits were six and six, 24. And he also was born to Rapha. 7And he taunted Israel, and Jonathan, the son of Shimeah, the brother of David, struck him. 8These were born to Rapha in Gath. And they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.

21And the adversary stood up against Israel, and he incited David to count Israel. 2And David said to Joab and to the commanders of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba and to Dan, and bring to me, that I may know their number.” 3And Joab said, “May Yahweh add to his people like them 100 times. My lord the king, are not all of them servants to my lord? Why does my lord seek this? Why should it be for guilt to Israel?” 4But the word of the king prevailed against Joab. So Joab went out and walked about in all of Israel. Then he came to Jerusalem. 5And Joab gave the number of the mustering of the people to David. And all of Israel was 1,100,000 men drawing the sword, and Judah, 470,000 men drawing the sword. 6But Levi and Benjamin he did not muster in their midst, for the word of the king was abhorrent to Joab. 7And it was evil in the eyes of God concerning this word, and he struck Israel. 8And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, that I have done this thing. And now, please make the iniquity of your servant pass away, for I have acted very foolishly.”

9And Yahweh spoke to Gad, the seer of David, saying, 10“Go, and you shall speak to David, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Three, I, I am stretching over you. Choose for yourself one from them, and I will do it to you.” ’ ” 11And Gad came to David, and he said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Take for yourself, 12whether three years of famine or three months of being swept away from the face of your adversaries and the sword of your enemies overtaking you or three days of the sword of Yahweh, even a plague in the land and the angel of Yahweh destroying in all of the border of Israel.’ And now, see, what word shall I return to the one having sent me?” 13And David said to Gad, “It is narrow to me greatly! Let me fall, please, into the hand of Yahweh, for his mercies are very many, but into the hand of man, let me not fall.” 14And Yahweh put a plague on Israel, and 70,000 men from Israel fell. 15And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. But as he was destroying, Yahweh saw, and he relented concerning the harm. And he said to the destroying angel, “Enough! Now lower your hand.” And the angel of Yahweh was standing at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 16And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of Yahweh standing between the earth and between the heavens, and his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. And David fell, and the elders, covered in sackcloth, on their faces. 17And David said to God, “Was it not I, I who said to muster the people? And I am he who sinned, and doing wrong, I have done wrong. But these sheep, what have they done? Yahweh my God, please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father, but may a plague not be on your people.”

18And the angel of Yahweh said to Gad to say to David that David should go up to raise an altar to Yahweh at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19So David went up at the word of Gad who spoke in the name of Yahweh. 20And Ornan turned, and he saw the angel. And the four of his sons with him were hiding themselves. And Ornan was threshing wheat. 21And David came to Ornan. And Ornan looked, and he saw David. And he came out from the threshing floor, and he prostrated himself to David, nostrils to the ground. 22And David said to Ornan, “Give to me the place of the threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it—give it to me for the full silver—that the plague may be restrained from upon the people.” 23And Ornan said to David, “Take for yourself, that my lord the king may do the good in his eyes. See, I give the cattle for the burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for the offering. I give everything.” 24And King David said to Ornan, “No, for buying, I will buy for the full silver, for I will not lift up to Yahweh what is to you and offer a burnt offering without cost.” 25And David gave to Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the place. 26And David built there an altar to Yahweh, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And he called to Yahweh, and he answered him with fire from the heavens on the altar of the burnt offering. 27And Yahweh spoke to the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.

28At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there. 29For the tabernacle of Yahweh that Moses made in the wilderness and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon at that time. 30And David was not able to go to its face to seek God, for he was terrified from the face of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.

22And David said, “This, it will be the house of Yahweh God, and this will be the altar for burnt offering for Israel.”

2And David said to gather the foreigners who were in the land of Israel. And he appointed cutters to cut out stones of hewing to build the house of God. 3And David prepared iron to abundance for the nails for the doors of the gates and for the joinings, and bronze to abundance, without weighing, 4And trees of cedar without number, for the Sidonians and the Tyrians brought trees of cedar to David to abundance. 5And David said, “Solomon my son is a young man and tender, and the house to build for Yahweh is to make great for the sake of the name and for beauty in all of the lands. Let me now prepare for it.” And David prepared to abundance to the face of his death.

6And he called for Solomon his son, and he commanded him to build a house for Yahweh, the God of Israel. 7And David said to Solomon, “My son, I, it was with my heart to build a house for the name of Yahweh my God. 8But the word of Yahweh was to me, saying, ‘You have shed blood to abundance, and you have made great wars. You shall not build a house for my name, for you have shed much blood on the earth to my face. 9Behold a son being born to you; he, he will be a man of rest. And I will give rest to him from all of his enemies from around. For Solomon will be his name, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days. 10He, he will build a house for my name. And he, he will be a son to me, and I will be a father to him. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel to forever.’ 11Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you, and may you succeed, and may you build a house of Yahweh your God, just as he spoke about you. 12Only may Yahweh give insight and understanding to you, and may he give you command over Israel, that you may keep the law of Yahweh your God. 13Then you will succeed, if you are careful to do the statutes and the judgments that Yahweh commanded Moses concerning Israel. Be strong and be courageous. May you not fear, and may you not be dismayed. 14And behold, in my trouble, I have prepared for the house of Yahweh gold, 100,000, kikkars, and silver, 1,000,000 kikkars, and for bronze and for iron without weighing, for it is to abundance. And I have prepared timbers and stones, and you shall add to them. 15And with you to abundance are doers of work: cutters and craftsmen of stone and wood, and all wise in all work 16in gold, in silver, and in bronze and in iron, without number. Arise and work, and may Yahweh be with you.”

17And David commanded all of the rulers of Israel to help Solomon his son, 18“Is not Yahweh your God with you, and has he not given rest to you from around? For he has given the dwellers of the land into my hand, and the land has been subdued to the face of Yahweh and to the face of his people. 19Now give your heart and your soul to seek Yahweh your God, and arise and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, to bring the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh and the vessels of holiness of God to the house being built for the name of Yahweh.”

23And David was old, and he was full of days, and he made Solomon his son reign over Israel. 2And he gathered all of the rulers of Israel and the priests and the Levites. 3And the Levites were counted from sons of 30 years and above, and the counting was by their skulls, by males, 38,000. 4“From these, to lead over the work of the house of Yahweh, 24,000, and officers and judges, 6,000, 5and 4,000 gatekeepers and 4,000 praisers of Yahweh with the instruments that I made for praising.” 6And David divided them into divisions according to the sons of Levi: of Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

7Of the Gershonite: Ladan and Shimei. 8The sons of Ladan: Jehiel, the head, and Zetham and Joel—three. 9The sons of Shimei: Shelomoth and Haziel and Haran—three. These were the heads of the fathers of Ladan. 10And the sons of Shimei: Jahath and Zina and Jeush,and Beriah. These were the sons of Shimei—four. 11And Jahath was the head, and Zizah, the second, but Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons, so they became a house of a father by one assignment.

12The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel—four. 13The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was separated for him to consecrate the holy of holies, he and his sons to forever, to sacrifice to the face of Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless his name to forever. 14And Moses, the man of God, his sons were called according to the tribe of Levi. 15The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 16The sons of Gershom: Shebuel, the head. 17And the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah, the head. 24These were the sons of Levi according to the house of their fathers, heads of fathers, by their appointments, in the numbering of names by their skulls, the doer of the work of the service of the house of Yahweh, from sons of 20 years and above. 25For David said, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people. And he dwells in Jerusalem to forever. 26And also for the Levites, it is not to carry the tabernacle and all of its vessels for its service.” 27For by the last words of David they were counting the sons of Levi from sons of 20 years and to above. 28For their service was at the hand of the sons of Aaron for the service of the house of Yahweh, over the courts and over the chambers and over the purifying of all of the holy and the work of the service of the house of God 29and for the bread of the arrangement and for the fine flour for the offering and for the wafers of unleavened bread and for the pan and for the mixing and for every measure and size 30and to stand, by morning by morning, to thank and to praise Yahweh, and thus in the evening, 31and for every offering of burnt offerings to Yahweh on the Sabbaths, at the new moons, and at the annual festivals by number according to the regulation about them continually to the face of Yahweh. 32And they kept the keeping of the tent of meeting and the keeping of the holy place and the keeping of the sons of Aaron, their brothers, for the service of the house of Yahweh.

24And to the sons of Aaron, their divisions. The sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2And Nadab died, and Abihu, to the face of their father, and sons were not to them. And Eleazar and Ithamar became priests. 3And David divided them, and Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, according to their appointment in their service. 4And more sons of Eleazar were found for heads of men than sons of Ithamar, so they divided them for the sons of Eleazar, heads of a house of fathers, sixteen, and for the sons of Ithamar for the house of their fathers, eight. 5And they divided them by lots, these with these, for officials of the holy place and officials of God were from the sons of Eleazar and among the sons of Ithamar. 6And Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel, the scribe from the Levites, wrote them to the face of the king and the officials and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers for the priests and for the Levites. One house of a father was taken for Eleazar, and was taken, was taken for Ithamar.

At the hands of the king were Asaph and Jeduthun and Heman. 7And their number, with their brothers having been taught the song of Yahweh, all of the ones understanding, was 288. 8And they cast lots for a duty, just as like small, like great, the one understanding with the student.

For because of this, wrath was upon Israel. And the number did not go up among the number of the matters of the days of King David.

And the commander of the army of the king was Joab.

28And David assembled all of the leaders of Israel, the leaders of the tribes and the commanders of the divisions serving the king and the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds and the officers of all of the property and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officials and the warriors and all of the warriors of valor, to Jerusalem. 2And David the king rose to his feet, and he said, “Hear me, my brothers and my people. As for me, it was with my heart to build a house of rest for the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh and as a footstool of the feet of our God. And I prepared to build. 3But God said to me, ‘You shall not build a house for my name, for you have been a man of battles and you have shed blood.’ 4Yet Yahweh, the God of Israel, chose me from all of the house of my father to be king over Israel forever, for he chose Judah for a leader, and in the house of Judah, the house of my father, and among the sons of my father, he delighted in me to make me reign over all of Israel. 5And from all of my sons—for Yahweh has given many sons to me—he then chose Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Yahweh over Israel. 6And he said to me, ‘Solomon your son, he, he will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him for myself as a son, and I, I will be a father to him. 7And I will establish his kingdom to forever if he is strong to do my commands and my judgments, as this day.’ 8And now, in the eyes of all of Israel, the assembly of Yahweh, and in the ears of our God, keep and seek all of the commandments of Yahweh your God, that you may possess the good land and that you may cause your sons after you to inherit it to forever.

9And you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father, and serve him with a whole heart and with a willing soul, for Yahweh is seeking all hearts and he is understanding every intention of thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you abandon him, he will reject you forever. 10Now see, for Yahweh has chosen you to build a house as a sanctuary. Be strong and act.”

11And David gave to Solomon his son the plan of the porch and its houses and its treasuries and its upper rooms and its inner rooms and the house of the covering 12and the plan of all that was with him by the Spirit for the courts of the house of Yahweh and for all of the chambers around, for the treasuries of the house of God and for the treasuries of the holy things 13and for the divisions of the priests and the Levites and for all of the work of the service of the house of Yahweh and for all of the vessels of the service of the house of Yahweh, 14for gold by weight for gold for all of the vessels of service and service, for all of the vessels of silver by weight for all of the vessels of service and service, 15and the weight for the gold lampstands and their gold lamps by weight, lampstand and lampstand and its lamps, and for the silver lampstands by weight, for a lampstand and its lamps, according to the service of lampstand and lampstand, 16and gold by weight for the tables of the arrangement, for table and table, and silver for the tables of silver, 17and the forks and the basins and the pitchers of pure gold and for the gold bowls, by weight for bowl and bowl, and for the bowls of silver by weight, for bowl and bowl, 18and for the altar of incense, refined gold by weight, and for the plan of the chariot of the gold cherubs for spreading out and covering over the Box of the Covenant of Yahweh. 19“Everything is in writing from the hand of Yahweh upon me. He made me understand all of the works of the plan.”

20And David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and be courageous and act. May you not fear, and may you not be dismayed, for Yahweh God, my God, is with you. He will not leave you and he will not abandon you until all of the work of the service of the house of Yahweh finishes. 21And behold, the divisions of the priests and the Levites for all of the service of the house of God, and with you in all of the work will be every willing one with wisdom for all of the service, and the leaders and all of the people, for all of your ways.”

29And King David said to all of the assembly, “Solomon my son—God has chosen him alone—is young and tender, and the work is great, for the temple is not for man but for Yahweh God. 2And according to all of my power I have prepared for the house of my God gold for the gold, and silver for the silver and bronze for the bronze; iron for the iron and wood for the wood; stones of onyx and settings, stones of antimony and variegation, and every precious stone and stones of marble, to abundance. 3And again, in my delighting in the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God a treasure being to me, gold and silver, to above from everything I have prepared for the house of the sanctuary: 43,000 kikkars of gold from the gold of Ophir and 7,000 kikkars of refined silver to overlay the walls of the houses, 5gold for the gold and silver for the silver and for all of the work by the hand of the craftsmen. And who is willing to fill his hand today to Yahweh?”

6Then the leaders of the fathers offered freely, and the leaders of the tribes of Israel and the commanders of thousands and hundreds and the commanders of the work of the king. 7And they gave gold for the service of the house of God, 5,000 kikkars and one myriad darics, and silver, 10,000 kikkars, and bronze, 18,000 kikkars, and iron, 100,000 kikkars. 8And the one being found with it, they gave stones to the treasury of the house of Yahweh under the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9And the people rejoiced because they had offered freely, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to Yahweh. And King David also rejoiced a great rejoicing.

10And David blessed Yahweh to the eyes of all of the assembly. And David said, “Blessed are you, Yahweh, God of Israel our father, from forever and to forever. 11To you, Yahweh, are the greatness and the might and the glory and the splendor and the majesty, for everything in the heavens and on the earth is to you, Yahweh, the kingdom and lifting yourself above all as head. 12And wealth and glory are from to your face, and you are ruling over all, and in your hand are power and might, and in your hand is to exalt and to strengthen all. 13And now, our God, we are giving thanks to you and praising the name of your glory. 14And for who am I, and who are my people, that we should have the power to offer freely like this? For everything is from you, and from your hand we have given to you. 15For we are foreigners to your face and settlers, like all of our fathers. Our days upon the earth are like a shadow and without hope. 16Yahweh our God, all of this abundance that we have prepared to build a house for you, for the name of your holiness, it is from your hand, and all is for you. 17And I know, my God, that you are examining the heart and are pleased with uprightnesses. In the uprightness of my heart, I, I have offered freely all of these. And now your people have been found here, I see with rejoicing, to offer freely to you. 18Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever concerning the intention of the thoughts of the heart of your people, and establish their heart toward you. 19And give to Solomon my son a whole heart to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes and to do everything and to build the temple that I have prepared.”

20And David said to all of the assembly, “Now bless Yahweh your God.” And all of the assembly blessed Yahweh, the God of their fathers. And they bowed down and prostrated themselves to Yahweh and to the king. 21And they sacrificed sacrifices to Yahweh and they offered burnt offerings to Yahweh on the morrow of that day, 1,000 bulls, 1,000 rams, 1,000 lambs, and their drink offerings and sacrifices to abundance for all of Israel. 22And they ate and drank to the face of Yahweh on that day with great rejoicing. And they made Solomon, the son of David, king a second time, and they anointed a leader for Yahweh, and Zadok as priest. 23And Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king in place of David his father. And he succeeded, and all of Israel listened to him.

24And all of the leaders and the warriors and also all of the sons of King David gave a hand under King Solomon. 25And Yahweh made Solomon great to above in the eyes of all of Israel. And he put on him the majesty of a kingdom over Israel that had not been on any king to his face.

26Now David, the son of Jesse, had reigned over all of Israel. 27And the days that he reigned over Israel were 40 years. He reigned in Hebron 7 years, and he reigned in Jerusalem 33. 28And he died in good old age, full of days, wealth, and glory. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. 29Now the matters of King David, the first and the last, behold, they are written in the words of Samuel the seer and in the words of Nathan the prophet and in the words of Gad the visionary, 30with all of his reign and his might and the times that passed over him and over Israel and over all of the kingdoms of the lands.
