ULT 1 CHR Chapter 21

21And the adversary stood up against Israel, and he incited David to count Israel. 2And David said to Joab and to the commanders of the people, “Go, count Israel from Beersheba and to Dan, and bring to me, that I may know their number.” 3And Joab said, “May Yahweh add to his people like them 100 times. My lord the king, are not all of them servants to my lord? Why does my lord seek this? Why should it be for guilt to Israel?” 4But the word of the king prevailed against Joab. So Joab went out and walked about in all of Israel. Then he came to Jerusalem. 5And Joab gave the number of the mustering of the people to David. And all of Israel was 1,100,000 men drawing the sword, and Judah, 470,000 men drawing the sword. 6But Levi and Benjamin he did not muster in their midst, for the word of the king was abhorrent to Joab. 7And it was evil in the eyes of God concerning this word, and he struck Israel. 8And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly, that I have done this thing. And now, please make the iniquity of your servant pass away, for I have acted very foolishly.”

9And Yahweh spoke to Gad, the seer of David, saying, 10“Go, and you shall speak to David, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Three, I, I am stretching over you. Choose for yourself one from them, and I will do it to you.” ’ ” 11And Gad came to David, and he said to him, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘Take for yourself, 12whether three years of famine or three months of being swept away from the face of your adversaries and the sword of your enemies overtaking you or three days of the sword of Yahweh, even a plague in the land and the angel of Yahweh destroying in all of the border of Israel.’ And now, see, what word shall I return to the one having sent me?” 13And David said to Gad, “It is narrow to me greatly! Let me fall, please, into the hand of Yahweh, for his mercies are very many, but into the hand of man, let me not fall.” 14And Yahweh put a plague on Israel, and 70,000 men from Israel fell. 15And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it. But as he was destroying, Yahweh saw, and he relented concerning the harm. And he said to the destroying angel, “Enough! Now lower your hand.” And the angel of Yahweh was standing at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 16And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of Yahweh standing between the earth and between the heavens, and his drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. And David fell, and the elders, covered in sackcloth, on their faces. 17And David said to God, “Was it not I, I who said to muster the people? And I am he who sinned, and doing wrong, I have done wrong. But these sheep, what have they done? Yahweh my God, please let your hand be against me and against the house of my father, but may a plague not be on your people.”

18And the angel of Yahweh said to Gad to say to David that David should go up to raise an altar to Yahweh at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19So David went up at the word of Gad who spoke in the name of Yahweh. 20And Ornan turned, and he saw the angel. And the four of his sons with him were hiding themselves. And Ornan was threshing wheat. 21And David came to Ornan. And Ornan looked, and he saw David. And he came out from the threshing floor, and he prostrated himself to David, nostrils to the ground. 22And David said to Ornan, “Give to me the place of the threshing floor, that I may build an altar to Yahweh on it—give it to me for the full silver—that the plague may be restrained from upon the people.” 23And Ornan said to David, “Take for yourself, that my lord the king may do the good in his eyes. See, I give the cattle for the burnt offerings and the threshing sledges for the wood and the wheat for the offering. I give everything.” 24And King David said to Ornan, “No, for buying, I will buy for the full silver, for I will not lift up to Yahweh what is to you and offer a burnt offering without cost.” 25And David gave to Ornan 600 shekels of gold by weight for the place. 26And David built there an altar to Yahweh, and he offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. And he called to Yahweh, and he answered him with fire from the heavens on the altar of the burnt offering. 27And Yahweh spoke to the angel, and he returned his sword to its sheath.

28At that time, when David saw that Yahweh had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there. 29For the tabernacle of Yahweh that Moses made in the wilderness and the altar of burnt offering were at the high place in Gibeon at that time. 30And David was not able to go to its face to seek God, for he was terrified from the face of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.
