The Second Book of Samuel 5

5And all the tribes of Israel came to David, to Hebron. And they said, saying, “Look at us, we are your bone and your flesh. 2Both yesterday and the day before, when Saul was king over us, you yourself were the person who brought out and the person who brought in Israel. And Yahweh said to you, ‘You yourself will shepherd my people, Israel, and you yourself will become leader over Israel.’ ”

3And all the elders of Israel came to the king, to Hebron, and King David cut for them a covenant in Hebron to the face of Yahweh. And they anointed David as king over Israel.

4A son of 30 years was David when he became king. He was king 40 years. 5In Hebron, he was king over Judah seven years and six months. And in Jerusalem, he was king 33 years over all Israel and Judah.

6And the king and his men went to Jerusalem, to the Jebusites, the people who lived in the land. And he said to David, saying, “You will not come here unless the blind people and the lame people remove you,” saying, “David will not come here.” 7And David captured the mountain stronghold of Zion—it is the city of David.

8And David said on that day, “Anyone striking the Jebusites (and let him touch the water shaft) and the lame people and the blind people, the people who are hated by the life of David.” Therefore, they say, “The blind person and the lame person will not come into the house.”

9And David lived in the mountain stronghold, and he called it ‘the City of David.’ And David built on all sides from the terrace and to the house. 10And David went, going and becoming great. And Yahweh the God of Hosts was with him.

11And Hiram the king of Tyre sent messengers to David and trees of cedar and craftsmen of wood and craftsmen of wall stone. And they built a house for David. 12And David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel and that he had raised his kingdom high for the sake of his people, Israel.

13And David again took concubines and wives from Jerusalem after his coming from Hebron. And again sons and daughters were born to David. 14And these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua and Shobab and Nathan and Solomon 15and Ibhar and Elishua and Nepheg and Japhia 16and Elishama and Eliada and Eliphelet.

17And the Philistines heard that they anointed David as king over Israel, and all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard, and he went down to the mountain stronghold. 18(And the Philistines came, and they overtook the Valley of Rephaim) 19And David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Should I go up to the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?”

And Yahweh said to David, “Go up, for I will certainly give the Philistines into your hand.”

20And David came to Baal-Perazim, and David struck them there, and he said, “Yahweh broke through my enemies to my face like the breach of waters.” Therefore, he called the name of that place Baal-Perazim. 21And they abandoned there their idols, and David and his men carried them.

22And the Philistines still continued to go up, and they overtook the Valley of Rephaim. 23And David inquired of Yahweh, and he said, “You will not go up. Wheel around to behind them, and you will come to them from opposite the balsam trees. 24And it will be, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then you will pay attention, for then Yahweh will go out to your faces to strike the camp of the Philistines.” 25And David did thus, just as Yahweh commanded him. And he struck the Philistines from Geba until your coming to Gezer.
