2 Then after fourteen years, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along also. 2 But I went up according to a revelation, and I laid before them the gospel which I proclaim among the nations, but privately to those who are esteemed, lest somehow I run or had run in vain.
3 But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised; 4 but because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who slipped in to spy out our freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, {in order to}[fn] bring us into bondage, 5 to whom we did not yield in submission even for an hour, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you.
6 But from those who seemed to be something - whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; God does not show favoritism to people - for those who seemed important added nothing to me, 7 but on the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel of the uncircumcision, just as Peter with the circumcision, 8 for the one who worked in Peter for the apostleship of the circumcision also worked in me for the Gentiles, 9 and when they recognized the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, those who seemed to be pillars, gave the right hand of fellowship to me and Barnabas, that we should [[indeed]][fn] go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcision; 10 only they asked us to remember the poor, which I also was eager to do.
11 But when {Cephas}[fn] came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he was condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he was eating with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those from the circumcision. 13 And they played the hypocrite with him [and] the rest of the Jews, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to {Cephas}[fn] in front of them all, “If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not like the Jews, how do you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
15 We are by nature Jews and not sinners from among the Gentiles; 16 knowing [however] that a person is not justified by works of the law but {through faith in Jesus Christ},[fn] we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order that we might be {justified by faith in Christ}[fn] and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no flesh will be justified.
17 But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not! 18 For if I rebuild what I have destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.
19 For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; 20 and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God,[fn] who loved me and gave himself for me.
21 I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died for nothing.
