O foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you [[that you should not obey the truth]],[fn] before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified [[among you]]?[fn] 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun with the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?
So then, the one supplying the Spirit to you and working miracles among you, is it from works of the law or from hearing with faith? 6 Just as Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.[fn]
Therefore, know that those of faith, these are sons of Abraham.
But the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the nations by faith, announced the good news beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.”[fn] 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.
For as many as are of works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not abide {by}[fn] all things written in the book of the law, to do them.”[fn] 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.”[fn] 12 But the law is not of faith; rather, “The {one}[fn] who does these things will live by them.”[fn]
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree,”[fn] 14 in order that the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Brothers, I speak in human terms: even a human covenant, once ratified, no one sets aside or adds to it. 16 But to Abraham were the promises spoken and to his seed.[fn] It does not say, “And to seeds,” as referring to many, but as referring to one, “And to your seed,” who is Christ.[fn]
This is what I mean: the law, which came 430 years afterward, does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God [[in Christ]],[fn] so as to make the promise void. 18 For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but God granted it to Abraham by a promise.
Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party alone, but God is one.
Is the law then contrary to the promises [of God]?[fn] Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. 22 But the Scripture has confined all things under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
But before faith arrived, we were guarded under the law, confined to the faith that was about to be disclosed. 24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.[fn]
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs according to the promise.
