Moff EZE Chapter 24

EZE 24 ©

24In the ninth year, on the tenth day of the tenth month, this word from the Eternal came to me: 2“Son of man, write down the name of this day; on this very day the king of Babylon has begun to invest Jerusalem. 3Tell this rebellious community a parable; give them this message from the Lord the Eternal:

‘Set the cauldron on the fire, set it on,

pour in water,

4

put in the pieces,

all the good pieces,

thighs and shoulders,

fill it with the choicest bones,

5

choose the finest of the flock;

then pile wood under it,

make it boil merrily,

seething the bones in it!’

6For this is the Lord the Eternal’s word: ‘Woe to the bloody city! 9I myself will pile the fuel high. 10Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, but empty out the flesh, pour out the broth, 11and then set the cauldron empty on the coals to heat, to let its copper glow, and melt out its impurity, consuming its rust. 12But the thick rust will not leave it; not even the fire can purge it. 6Woe to the cauldron full of rust, with rust that will not leave it! Empty it anyhow, pull out the pieces as they come! 7[[For the blood of her murders is in her; she poured it out on the bare rock, not on the ground for the dust to hide it, 8but to rouse my fury, to provoke vengeance upon herself.]] 13The rust is your impurity so foul. Because I would have cleansed you and you would not be clean, you shall never be cleansed from your impurity till I glut my fury on you. 14I the Eternal have said it, and I will do it; I will not refrain, I will not pity, I will not relent, I will punish you as you have lived and acted’--so says the Lord the Eternal.”

15This word from the Eternal came to me: 16“Son of man, I am taking from you at a stroke the treasure of your eyes. 17But no mourning for her, not a tear! Sigh silently, raise no lament for the dead; put on your turban and your sandals, cover not up your beard, and eat no funeral food.” 18I told this to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died.

19Next day I did as I had been told. The people asked me, “Will you not tell us what this means for us--this conduct of yours?” 20I answered, “This word from the Eternal came to me: 21Tell the community of Israel this message from the Lord the Eternal--‘I am about to desecrate my own sanctuary, your pride and confidence, the treasure of your eyes, your darling care; and the sons and daughters you have left behind are to fall by the sword. 22[[You shall do as I have done; you shall not cover up your beards, nor eat funeral food; 23you shall wear your turbans and your sandals, you shall neither lament nor weep but pine away in your sins and groan to yourselves.]] 24This is how Ezekiel shall be an example to you; as he does, so shall you do when the time comes. It will teach you that I am the Lord the Eternal.’ 25And, son of man, on the day I take from them their confidence, their proud delight, the treasure of their eyes, their heart’s desire, together with their sons and daughters, 26a fugitive will come to you with the news. 27Then you may open your lips to the fugitive, you may speak aloud, you need not be any longer dumb. So shall you be an example to them, and they shall learn that I am the Eternal.” * * *
