33 At noon, it got dark everywhere, until 3pm, 34 [ref]when Yeshua shouted loudly, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

35 Some of the people standing nearby thought he was calling the prophet Eliyah. 36 [ref]One of them ran, and soaked a sponge in some sour wine, then put it on a stick and held it up for Yeshua to drink, saying, “Hang on. Let’s see if Eliyah does come to get him down.”

37 But just then Yeshua uttered a loud cry and exhaled his last breath.

38 [ref](Back in the temple, the curtain tore down the middle from the top to the bottom.) 39 The Roman centurion who had been standing back watching everything, said when Yeshua died, “This man was definitely God’s son.”

40 [ref]Further back, there was also a group of women observing everything. These included Maria from Magdala, Maria the mother of young Yacob and Joses, and Salome, 41 and others who had followed Yeshua around Galilee and helped look after him, along with many others who had come down with him to Yerusalem.

28 Having done this, Yeshua knew that everything had been accomplished, and (in order for the scriptures[ref] to be fulfilled) said, “I’m thirsty.”

29 There was a container lying there full of vinegary wine, so they placed a sponge on a hyssop stalk, soaked it in the wine, and held it up to his mouth. 30 After Yeshua had sucked some wine out, he said, “It is finished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

45 Around noon, the whole country became dark for three hours 46 [ref]and then around 3pm, Yeshua shouted with a loud voice, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”

47 Some of the people standing there heard him and thought that he was calling Eliyah[fn] 48 [ref]One of them ran and got a sponge and dipped it in wine vinegar, and then wrapped it around a reed and held it up to his mouth to drink from.

49 But the others were saying, “Just leave him and we’ll see whether Eliyah comes to save him.”

50 Then Yeshua made a loud cry and sent his spirit away.

51 [ref]Then, wow, the curtain inside the temple was torn apart from the top to the bottom, and there was an earthquake and splitting of rocks. 52 Some tombs came open and many bodies of godly people came alive again 53 and leaving the tombs after his resurrection, they went into God’s city where many people saw them.

54 The Roman officer and his soldiers who were guarding Yeshua were very frightened when they felt the earthquake and saw what happened, and said, “This man really was a son of God!”

55 [ref]There were many women watching all this from a distance—they were those who from Galilee who had followed Yeshua and looked after him, 56 including Maria from Magdala, Maria the mother of Yacob and Yosef, and Zebedee’s wife—the mother of Yacob and Yohan.

44 By then it was around midday but it went dark until around 3pm—45 [ref]the sun went dark[fn] and the curtain inside the temple was torn in the middle. 46 [ref]Then Yeshua called out loudly, “Father, I’m entrusting my spirit into your care.” and after saying that, he stopped breathing.

47 When the centurion saw how it happened, he praised God saying, “This really was an innocent man.”

48 The crowd of people who’d gathered for the spectacle, after seeing what happened they returned to the city, beating their chests in sorrow. 49 [ref]Yeshua’s acquaintances had stood further back along with the women who have accompanied him from Galilee, and they too saw it all.
