5:1 The scroll and the lamb
5 Then I saw a scroll in the right-hand of the one sitting on the throne. It had writing on both sides, and have been sealed with seven wax seals.[ref] 2 I also saw a powerful messenger who was asking in a loud voice, “Who’s worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But there wasn’t any person on earth or in the place of the dead who was permitted to open the scroll and read it. 4 I began to cry loudly, because no one could be found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside it. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Stop crying. Look, here’s the lion from the tribe of Judah. He’s the descendant of King David who’s a conqueror who’s competent to break the seals and open the scroll.”[ref]
6 Then I saw a lamb standing there between the throne and the four living creatures and the elders. The lamb looked like it had been slaughtered, and it had seven horns and seven eyes which are God’s seven spirits that had been sent throughout the world.[ref] 7 The lamb went up to the throne and accepted the scroll from the right hand of the one sitting on the throne. 8 When he’d taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders knelt down in from of the lamb. Each elder held a harp and a bowl that was full of incense (which symbolised the prayers of the believers).[ref] 9 They sung a new song like this:[ref]
“It’s you who’s worthy to take the scroll and break its seals,
because you were slaughtered and with your blood you purchased people for God
from every tribe and language and people group and nation.
10 You’ve made them to be a kingdom[ref]
and to be priests to serve our God,
and they will reign on the earth.”
11 Then I looked and I heard the voices of the living creatures and elders that were around the throne along with millions of God’s messengers[ref] 12 saying with loud voices:
“The lamb that was slaughtered is worthy to receive power and riches,
and wisdom and strength and honour and praise and blessing.”
13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth, and under the earth and in the sea—everything everywhere—saying,
“Too the one sitting on the throne
and to the lamb,
be praise and honour and GLORY and power
forever and ever.”
14 Then the four living creatures said, “May it be so,” and the elders knelt down and worshipped.
