Song 137/Mourning Yerushalem’s destruction

This is still a very early look into the unfinished text of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check the text in advance before using in public.

Readers’ Version

Literal Version

137:0 Mourning Yerushalem’s destruction

137We sat beside the rivers in Babylon

sat and wept when we thought about Tsiyyon (Zion).

2We hung our harps there on the willow trees

3because our captors there had demanded that we sing songs,

and those who never stopped mocking us said,

“Sing us one of the songs from Tsiyyon.”

4How could we sing a song about Yahweh

while we were captive in a foreign country?

5If I forget about you, Yerushalem,

may my right hand forget how to do anything.

6Let my tongue stick to my palate if I don’t keep remembering you

if I don’t prioritise Yerushalem over my favourite pastime.

7Remember, Yahweh, the day Yerushalem fell,

how the Edomites said,

“Tear it down—tear it down to its foundations.”

8You daughter of Babylon who will be destroyed

blessed be the one who repays you for what you did to us.[ref]

9Blessed be the one who seizes your little ones

and smashes them against the rocks.
