13:1 The regions not yet captured

13Now the years had passed and Yehoshua had grown old, and Yahweh said to him, “You’re old now and there’s still a lot of land that needs to be captured. 2This is the remaining land: all the territories of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites, 3from Shihor (east of Egypt) and as far as the border of Ekron to the north (it’s considered to be Canaanite), the five rulers of the Philistines (in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gat, and Ekron), and the Avvites. 4In the south: all the land of the Canaanites, and a Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Afek, as far as the border of the Amorites, 5plus the land of the Gebalites, all Lebanon towards the east, from Baal-Gad below Mt. Hermon as far as Lebo-Hamath. 6I myself will drive out all those who live in the hill country from Lebanon as far as Misrefot-Maim, and all the Sidonians. Make sure that it’s given to the Israelis as an inheritance, just as I instructed you.[ref] 7All that land should be divided up as an inheritance for the nine tribes plus half of the half-tribe of Menashsheh.

Tribal Allotments of the Promised Land

After the Israelites had conquered portions of the Promised Land and Joshua had grown old, the Lord directed him to divide the rest of the land among the tribes of Israel as their inheritance (Joshua 13-20). The eastern tribes had already been allotted their land under Moses’ leadership (Numbers 32), but they continued to help the other tribes drive out the Canaanites from land west of the Jordan River. The Lord also instructed the Israelites to designate several cities of refuge, where someone could flee for protection from an avenger if they accidentally killed someone (Numbers 35; Joshua 20).
