35 The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, 2 “Go to the house of the Rekabites and speak with them, and bring them to the house of Yahweh, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.” 3 So I took Jaazaniah son of Jeremiah son of Habazziniah, and his brothers, and all his sons, and all the house of the Rekabites, 4 and I brought them to the house of Yahweh, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, the man of God, which was beside the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum, the keeper of the threshold. 5 Then I set before the sons of the house of the Rekabites bowls full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, “Drink wine.” 6 But they said, “We will not drink wine, for Jonadab son of Rekab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall not drink wine, you nor your sons, forever. 7 And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall not plant a vineyard, and it shall not be to you; but in tents you shall dwell all your days, so that you may live many days on the face of the ground where you are sojourning there.’ 8 And we have listened to the voice of Jonadab son of Rekab, our father, in all that he commanded us, to not drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, and our daughters, 9 and to not build houses for us to inhabit, and there will not be to us vineyard or field or seed. 10 But we have dwelt in tents, and we have listened and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But it happened, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, that we said, ‘Come, and let us go to Jerusalem from before the face of the army of the Chaldeans and from before the face of the army of Aram.’ So we dwell in Jerusalem.”

12 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: ‘Go and say to the man of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “Will you not receive correction to listen to my words?”— the declaration of Yahweh—14 “The words of Jonadab son of Rekab that he commanded his sons, to not drink wine, have been carried out, and they have not drunk until this day, for they have listened to the commandment of their father. But I myself have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened to me. 15 And I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, ‘Turn now, a man from his evil way, and make your deeds good, and do not walk after other gods to serve them, and dwell in the land that I gave to you and to your fathers.’ But you did not incline your ear, and you did not listen to me. 16 For the sons of Jonadab son of Rekab have carried out the commandment of their father that he commanded them, but this people has not listened to me.” ’ 17 Therefore, thus says Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel: ‘Behold me bringing to Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the disaster that I have spoken against them, because I spoke to them but they did not listen, and I called to them but they did not answer.’ ”

18 And to the house of the Rekabites Jeremiah said, “Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Because you have listened to the commandment of Jonadab your father, and have kept all his commandments, and have done according to all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: ‘A man for Jonadab son of Rekab shall not be cut off to stand before my face all the days.’ ”
