36 Now it happened in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2 “Take for yourself a scroll of a book, and you shall write on it all the words that I have spoken to you concerning Israel and concerning Judah and concerning all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah and until this day. 3 Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the evil that I am planning to do to them, so that they may turn back, a man from his evil way, and I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
4 And Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh that he had spoken to him on a scroll of a book. 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am restrained; I am not able to enter the house of Yahweh. 6 And you yourself shall go and shall call out from the scroll what you have written from my mouth, the words of Yahweh, in the ears of the peoplein the house of Yahweh on the day of fasting. And also in the ears of all Judah, the ones coming from their cities, you shall read them. 7 Perhaps their supplication will fall to the face of Yahweh, and they will turn back, a man from his evil way; for great is the nose and the heat that Yahweh has spoken against this people.” 8 And Baruch son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet had commanded him, to read in the book the words of Yahweh, in the house of Yahweh.
9 Now it happened in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem and all the people, the ones coming from the cities of Judah into Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast to the face of Yahweh. 10 And Baruch called out from the book of the words of Jeremiah, in the house of Yahweh, in the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper courtyard, at the opening of the New Gate of the house of Yahweh, in the ears of all the people.
11 And Micaiah son of Gemariah son of Shaphan heard all the words of Yahweh from upon the book. 12 And he went down to the house of the king, into the chamber of the scribe, and behold, all the officials were sitting there: Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan son of Akbor, and Gemariah son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the officials. 13 And Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read in the book in the ears of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent Jehudi son of Nethaniah son of Shelemiah son of Cushi to Baruch, saying, “The scroll that you read in it in the ears of the people— take it in your hand and go.” So Baruch son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand and came to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit, please, and read it in our ears.” And Baruch read in their ears. 16 And it happened, when they heard all the words, that they expressed dread, a man to his neighbor, and they said to Baruch, “Reporting we must report all these words to the king.” 17 Then they asked Baruch, saying, “Declare, please, to us: How did you write all these words from his mouth?” 18 And Baruch said to them, “From his mouth he called to me all these words, and I was writing upon the book with ink.” 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and let a man not know where you are.”
20 And they went to the king, into the courtyard, and the scroll they deposited in the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And they reported in the ears of the king all of the words. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to take the scroll, and he took it from the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the officials, the ones standing beside the king. 22 And the king was sitting in the house of the winter, in the ninth month, and the brazier was burning to his face. 23 And it happened, as Jehudi read three or four columns, that he would cut it up in pieces with the knife of a scribe and throw it into the fire that was on the brazier, until all the scroll was finished on the fire that was on the brazier. 24 And they were not afraid, and they did not tear their garments— the king and all his servants, the ones hearing all these words. 25 And even Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah interceded with the king not to burn the scroll, but he did not listen to them. 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel son of the king, and Seraiah son of Azriel, and Shelemiah son of Abdeel, to seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but Yahweh hid them.
27 And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after the king burned the scroll and the words that Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, 28 “Return, take for yourself another scroll, and write on it all the former words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says Yahweh: “You yourself have burned this scroll, saying, ‘Why did you write on it, saying, coming, the king of Babylon will come and destroy this land, and he will cause man and beast to cease from it?’ ” 30 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: ‘There will not be to him one sitting on the throne of David, and his dead body will be thrown to the heat by the day and to the frost by the night. 31 And I will bring punishment upon him and on his seed and on his servants, for their iniquity, and I will bring upon them and upon the dwellers of Jerusalem and to a man of Judah all the evil that I have spoken to them, but they did not listen.’ ” 32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch son of Neriah the scribe, and he wrote on it from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah burned in the fire. And besides these, many words like them were added to them.
