ULT JER Chapter 32

JER 32 ©

32The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the tenth year of Zedekiah the king of Judah— that was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadnezzar. 2And at that time the army of the king of Babylon was laying siege to Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the courtyard of the guard that was in the house of the king of Judah, 3where Zedekiah the king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why are you prophesying, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh: Behold me, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. 4And Zedekiah the king of Judah will not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, for being given he will be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and his mouth will speak with his mouth, and his eyes will see his eyes. 5And he will make Zedekiah go to Babylon, and there he will be until I visit him”— the declaration of Yahweh.— “Though you fight against the Chaldeans, you will not succeed’?”

6And Jeremiah said, “The word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 7‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, “Buy for yourself my field that is in Anathoth, for to you belongs the right of redemption, to buy it.” ’ 8And Hanamel the son of my uncle came to me, according to the word of Yahweh, to the courtyard of the guard, and he said to me, 'Buy, please, my field that is in Anathoth, which is in the land of Benjamin, for to you belongs the right of possession, and to you the redemption. Buy it for yourself.' Then I knew that this was the word of Yahweh. 9So I bought the field from Hanamel the son of my uncle, which was in Anathoth, and I weighed out for him the silver, seven shekels and ten of the silver. 10And I wrote in the document and sealed it and I caused to testify witnesses, and I weighed the silver on the scales. 11Then I took the document of the purchase—the one being sealed the commandment and the terms, and the one being open—12and I gave the document of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, before the eyes of Hanamel of my uncle and before the eyes of the witnesses, the ones signing on the document of the purchase, before the eyes of all the Judeans who were sitting in the courtyard of the guard. 13And I commanded Baruch before their eyes, saying, 14'Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Take these documents, this document of the purchase, both the sealed one and this open document, and put them in a vessel of earthenware, so that they may stand many days. 15For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards will again be bought in this land.'

16And I prayed to Yahweh after I gave the document of the purchase to Baruch the son of Neriah, saying, 17Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, you yourself made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you, 18doing covenant faithfulness to thousands and repaying the iniquity of fathers into the bosom of their sons after them, the great, and mighty God— Yahweh of Armies is his name—19great in counsel and abounding in deed, whose eyes are open to all of the ways of the sons of man, to give to each according to his ways and according to the fruit of his deeds, 20who have set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, until this day, and in Israel and among mankind, and you made for yourself a name, as at this day. 21And you brought out your people Israel from the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders and with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm and with great terror. 22And you gave to them this land, which you swore to their fathers to give to them, a land flowing with milk and honey. 23And they entered and took possession of it, but they did not listen to your voice, and in your law they did not walk. All that you commanded them to do, they have not done, and so you caused all this calamity to happen to them. 24Behold, the siege mounds have come to the city to capture it, and the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it, because of the face of the sword and the famine and the plague. And what you spoke has happened, and behold, you are seeing it. 25Yet you yourself said to me, Lord Yahweh, "Buy for yourself the field with silver and cause witnesses to testify," though the city has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans.'"

26And the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying, 27“Behold, I am Yahweh, the God of all flesh. Is anything too difficult for me? 28Therefore, thus says Yahweh: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the Chaldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, and he will capture it. 29And the Chaldeans who are fighting against this city will come and they will set this city on fire and they will burn it, and the houses on whose roofs they made smoke to Baal and poured out drink offerings to other gods, so as to provoke me. 30For the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah have only been doing evil in my eyes from their youth, for the sons of Israel have surely been provoking me with the work of their hands”— the declaration of Yahweh. 31For this city has been to me to my nose and to my heat from the day that they built it and until this day, so that I should remove it from by my face, 32because of all the evil of the sons of Israel and the sons of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger— they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets, and the men of Judah and the dwellers of Jerusalem. 33And they turned to me the neck and not the face, and though teaching them, rising early and teaching, but they were not listening to receive instruction. 34And they set their detestable things in the house which is called by my name, to defile it. 35And they built the high places of Baal that are in the Valley of Ben Hinnom, to make their sons and their daughters pass through to Molech, which I did not command them, and it did not come up to my heart, to do this abomination, so as to cause Judah to sin.

36And now, therefore, thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, concerning this city, about which you are saying, ‘It has been given into the hand of the king of Babylon by the sword and by the famine and by the plague’: 37Behold me, gathering them from all the lands where I drove them there in my anger and in my heat and in great fury, and I will bring them back to this place and cause them to dwell in security. 38And they will be my people, and I myself will be their God. 39And I will give to them one heart and one way, to fear me all the days, for good to them and to their sons after them. 40And I will cut for them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn back from after them, to do good to them, and I will put my fear in their heart, so that they will not turn aside from by me. 41And I will rejoice over them to do good to them, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and with all my being.

42For thus says Yahweh: Just as I brought to this people all this great calamity, so I am bringing upon them all the good that I am speaking concerning them. 43And the field will be bought in this land, about which you are saying, "It is a desolation, without man and beast; it has been given into the hand of the Chaldeans." 44They will buy fields with the silver, and writing in the document and sealing and making witnesses witness, in the land of Benjamin and in the surroundings of Jerusalem and in the cities of Judah and in the cities of the hill country and in the cities of the foothills and in the cities of the Negev, for I will bring back their captivity”— the declaration of Yahweh.
