12So we captured that land at that time—from Aroer by the Arnon river, and half of the hill country of Gilead including its cities. I allocated those areas to the tribes of Reuven and Gad. 13Then the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan which had been Og’s kingdom, I allocated to half of the tribe of Menashsheh.”

(That whole area is called the land of the Refaites. 14Menashsheh’s son Yair had captured the Argov region as far as the borders with the Geshurites and Maacatites, renaming Bashan to Havvot-Yair as it’s still called to this day.)

15Then I allocated Gilead to Makir (a clan descended from Menashsheh), 16and I gave the southern part of Gilead to the tribes of Reuven and Gad, extending from the Arnon river (with the middle of it being the boundary) to the Yabbok river which borders against the Ammonites. 17The border extends from the plain along the east side of the Yarden valley, from Lake Kinneret in the north to the Arabah lake (the Salt Sea or Dead Sea) in the south and to the slopes of Mt. Pisgah on the east.

18Then at that time, I commanded you saying, ‘Your god Yahweh has given this land to you to possess it, however your brave warriors must cross over with the other Israeli tribes to help them conquer the western lands.[ref] 19Leave your wives and children and cattle (yes, I know you have many cattle) back here in the cities that I’ve given you 20until Yahweh gives peace to your brother tribes like you have here. Once they’ve taken possession of the land that your god Yahweh is given them across the river, then you’ll all be able to return her to your own inheritance that I’ve allocated to you.’

21“I also instructed Yehoshua (Joshua) at that time, saying, ‘You’ve seen everything that your god Yahweh has done to those two kings. Yahweh will do similar things to all the kingdoms that you’ll be passing through over there. 22Don’t be afraid of them, because your god Yahweh will be the one fighting for you all.

Num 13:17-33:

17So Mosheh sent them to explore Kanaan, telling them, “Go through the Negev and then up into the hill country. 18Find out what the land’s like, and whether the people living there are militarily strong or weak, and if they’re many or few. 19Find out whether the land is good or bad, what cities they live in, and how fortified they are. 20Find out whether the soil is fertile or not, whether or not there’s trees there. Be courageous and bring back some of the produce from that land.” (He said that because it was the time of the year when grapes were starting to ripen.)

21So the twelve men went and explored the region from the Tsin wilderness in the south, all the way up to Rehob at Levo-Hamat in the north. 22They started in the Negev, and went as far as Hevron where some of Anak’s descendents lived: Ahiman, Sheshay, Talmai. Hevron had been built seven years before Tsoan in Egypt (Heb. Mitsrayim). 23When they got to the Eshkol riverbed, they cut off a branch with a cluster of grapes, and carried it on a pole between two of them, along with some pomegranates and figs. 24(That place was then called Eshkol, meaning ‘cluster’, because of the cluster of grapes they’d taken from there.)

The reports from the scouts

25Forty days later, they returned from exploring that land 26and went to Kadash in the Paran wilderness. There they reported back to Mosheh and Aharon and all the assembled people, and showed them the fruit from the land, 27and told them, “We went to the land where you sent us, and it is indeed flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However, the people living in that land are powerful, and the cities are very well fortified. Also, some of the Anak people group live there. 29The Amalekite people live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Yebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country, and the Kanaanites live along the coast and along the Yordan river.”

30Then Kalev (Caleb) raised an arm to quieten the people in front of Mosheh and stated, “We’ll certainly go in there and take it over, because we’re capable of going against them.”

31But the men who’d gone in with him argued, “No,, we’re not able to battle against them because they’re stronger than us.” 32Then they went on to bring out a bad report to the Israelis about the land that they’d explored, saying, “The land that we passed to explore is a land that devours those who live in it. In addition, all the people we saw in there were tall and powerful, 33plus we saw the Nefilim (descendants of Anak), and we felt as small as grasshoppers compared to them, and that’s how they saw us as well.”[ref]

Josh 1:12-15:

12To the descendants of Reuben and Gad, and to the half-tribe of Menashsheh, Yehoshua said,[ref] 13Remember what Yahweh’s servant Mosheh informed you: Your god Yahweh is about give this land to you and to enable you all to settle down. 14Your women and children and your livestock will stay here in the land that Mosheh allocated to you on this eastern side of the Yordan River. But your soldiers must dress for battle and cross over ahead of your brothers and help them 15until Yahweh enables your brothers to take over the land that your god Yahweh is about to give them so they can settle like you all have. Then you’ll all be able to return to this land which Yahweh’s servant Mosheh gave you on this eastern side of the Yordan and take full control of it.”
