Num 25:1-9:
25 Meanwhile, the Israelis settled down at Shitim, and their men started sleeping with women from Moav (Moab) 2 who then invited them to sacrifices to their idols. So the Israelis bowed down to the idols and ate at the feasts, 3 and when Yisrael (Israel) consecrated themselves to Ba’al-Pe’or, Yahweh’s anger burnt towards them. 4 Then Yahweh told Mosheh (Moses), “Execute all the people’s leaders and display their bodies in broad daylight, and then Yahweh’s anger might turn back away from Yisrael.”
5 So Mosheh to Yisrael’s judges, “Each of you must execute your men who have joined others to serve Ba’al-Pe’or.”
6 ⇔Just then, unbelievably, an Israeli man came past Mosheh and all the people who were there outside the sacred tent weeping, and he was bringing a Midyanite woman with him. 7 When Pinhas (son of Eleazar, son of Aharon (Aaron)) saw that, he came out from among the gathered people, grabbed a spear, 8 and followed the Israeli man into his tent. He plunged the spear through the two of them—right through the man and the woman’s belly, and thus, stopped the deadly disease that had started against the Israelis. 9 However,, twenty-four thousand people had already died from that plague.
