Peter’s sermon in the temple

Acts 3:11–26

3:11 Peter’s sermon in the temple

11As the man clung onto Peter and Yohan, all the people ran to see them in Solomon’s Porch and they were really astounded. 12But when Peter saw the crowd, he answered their thoughts, “Fellow Israelis, why are you all puzzled about this, and why are you staring at us as if this man is walking because of our power or closeness to God.” 13[ref]The god of Abraham, Isaac, and Yacob—the god of our fathers—gave honour to his servant, Yeshua, who you handed over to be killed and then you rejected him when Pilate had judged him and wanted to release him. 14[ref]You disowned this man who was innocent and sinless, and instead you requested that a murderer be released to you. 15However in doing so, you killed the creator of life, who God then raised from the dead as we can attest. 16Now it’s our faith in the authority of Yeshua that has strengthened the legs of this man that you have seen and that you already knew—this authority and faith that comes from Yeshua completely healed this man right in front of you all.

17So now, friends, I know that you did all that in ignorance, just like your leaders, 18but actually God was fulfilling what he had had written by the prophets, that the messiah should suffer. 19Because of that, you all need to repent and turn back to God so that your sins can be erased, 20and then times of refreshing will come from the presence of the master, and so that he may send Yeshua the messiah who has been appointed, back to save you. 21For now it is appropriate for heaven to receive him, until the times of restoration of everything, which again God has had written by the faithful prophets. 22[ref]Indeed Moses said, ‘The master, our God will raise up a prophet for you that’s like one of your own brothers. You must listen to everything he says—whatever he tells you. 23[ref]Everyone who doesn’t listen to that prophet will end up totally destroyed and not part of God’s people.’ 24Similarly, the prophets from Samuel onwards spoke in turn, and when they spoke they foretold these current days. 25[ref]And you are the descendants of those prophets, and part of the agreement between God and your ancestors, when he told Abraham, ‘All the families in the world will be blessed by one of your descendants.’ 26God had raised up his servant and sent him to you Jews first, to bless you by turning each of you away from your own wicked behaviour.”

Exo 3:15:

15Then he continued, “This is what you need to tell the Israelis: ‘Yahweh, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Yitshak, and Yacob, sent me to you. This is my name forever, and this is my memorial from generation to generation.’

Mat 27:15-23:

27:15 The guiltless Yeshua is sentenced to death

(Mark 15:6-15, Luke 23:13-25, Yhn 18:39–19:16)

15It was the time of the Passover celebrations, and a tradition had been established that the governor would release one prisoner to the people—whoever they chose. 16At that time, there was a well-known prisoner named Barabbas, 17so when all the people had gathered, Pilate shouted down to them, “Who would you all like me to release: Barabbas or Yeshua who’s also being called the messiah?” 18He said this because he knew that Yeshua had been arrested because of the jealousy of the Jewish leaders.

19But while Pilate was still making his judgement, his wife sent a note to him, saying, “Don’t touch that guiltless man because I was very distressed by a dream I had about him.”

20Meanwhile the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to request that Barabbas be released and that Yeshua should be sentenced, 21so when the governor asked them, “Which of these two men should I release?” they called back, “Barabbas.”

22So what should I do to Yeshua who’s called the messiah?” Pilate asked.

“Execute him on a stake!” they all responded.

23“But what crime has he done?” demanded Pilate.

But they just kept yelling loudly, “Execute him on a stake.”

Mrk 15:6-14:

15:6 Pilate agrees to execute an innocent man

(Yhn 18:39–19:16, Mat. 27:15-26, Luke 23:13-25)

6Now at time of the Jewish Passover, Pilate would normally pardon one prisoner for them and release him. 7There was another prisoner at the time named Barabbas who was an activist accused of murder. 8By now, the crowd had arrived and asked Pilate to release a prisoner as usual at Passover. 9So he asked them, “Do you want me to release the King of the Jews for you?” 10This was because Pilate was well aware that the chief priests had brought Yeshua because they were jealous of his popularity. 11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to start saying that it was Barabbas that they wanted released. 12So Pilate asked again, “Then what should I do with this man that you call the King of the Jews?”

13The crowd yelled back, “Execute him on a pole.”

14Pilate demanded, “What has he even done wrong?”

But they just yelled louder, “Execute him on a pole!”

Luk 23:13-23:

23:13 The innocent prisoner sentenced to death

(Yhn 18:39–19:16, Mark 15:6-15, Mat. 27:15-26)

13So Pilate called together the chief priests and the local leaders and the people 14and told them, “You brought this man to me for stirring up the people, but listen, I’ve examined him in front of you all and I find him to not be guilty of anything that you’re all accusing him of 15and Herod didn’t either, because he just sent him back to us. Now listen, he’s done nothing worthy of a death sentence 16so I’ll have him disciplined and then discharged.

17 18But they all yelled out in unison, “Take him away and release Barabbas instead!” 19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for murder after an uprising that had occurred in the city.)

20Pilate called out again to them wanting to release Yeshua 21but they kept yelling, “Execute him on a stake! Execute him on a stake!”

22He tried a third time, “But what crime has this man committed? I’ve found nothing worthy of the death sentence, so I’ll discipline him and then release him.”

23But they kept loudly insisting that he be executed on a stake, and the yelling of the crowd was strong enough to convince Pilate

Yhn 19:12-15:

12After hearing this, Pilate wanted to release him but the Jews yelled out, “If you release that man, you’re no friend of Caesar. Everyone who claims to be a king is no friend of Caesar’s.”

13So now Pilate, having heard all this, brought Yeshua outside again. Pilate sat down on the judge’s seat at a place called The Stone Pavement (and called Gabbatha in Hebrew). 14It was now about noon on the day when the Passover meal is prepared, and Pilate said to the Jews, “Look. Here’s your king.”

15They yelled back, “Take him away. Take him away. Execute him on a stake.”

Pilate asked them, “You want me to have your king executed on a stake?”

“We don’t have any king other than Caesar,” the chief priests answered.
