Yeshua is taken to Pilate

Luke 23:1–5

Yhn 18:28–38

Mark 15:1–5

Mat 27:1–14

23:1 Yeshua is taken to Pilate

(Jn 18:28-38, Mark 15:1-5, Mat. 27:1-2)

23Then the whole group of them stood up and led him to Pilate 2where they started to bring their accusations, “We found this man perverting our nation and telling the people not to pay taxes to Caesar. He calls himself the messiah and claims to be a king.”

3“Are you the king of the Jews,” Pilate asked him?

You’re the one saying it,” Yeshua answered.

4Then Pilate told the chief priests and the crowds, “I can’t find anything that this man is guilty of.”

5But they kept insisting, “He’s been stirring up the people, teaching throughout all Yudea. He started in Galilee then worked his way all the way down here.”

18:28 Pilate interrogates Yeshua

(Mat. 26:71-75, Mark 14:69-72, Luke 22:58-62)

28Then they led Yeshua out from Caiaphas’ place and towards the residence of the governor. It was now the early hours of the morning and as Jews, they didn’t enter the residence of the Roman governor so they wouldn’t become defiled and thus unable to eat the Passover meal. 29So Governor Pilate came outside to them and asked, “What charge are you all bringing against this man?”

30“We wouldn’t have brought him to you if he hadn’t committed a serious crime,” they answered.

31So Pilate said, “You just take him and judge him yourselves according to your own laws.”

But the Jewish leaders responded, “We don’t have permission to execute anyone.” 32(This happened to fulfil what Yeshua had said[ref] about the way that he was going to die.)

33So Pilate went back into his governor’s residence and called for Yeshua and asked him, “So you’re the king of the Jews?”

34Are you saying this yourself,Yeshua asked, “or did others say it about me?

35Pilate retorted, “Hoy! I’m not a Jew. It was your own people and the chief priests that handed you over to me. What have you done?”

36My kingdom isn’t in this world,Yeshua answered, “because if it was, my supporters would have fought so that I wouldn’t have been handed over to the Jewish leaders. But no, my kingdom isn’t from here.

37So you are a king then?” Pilate responded.

You’re saying that I’m a king,” said Yeshua, “and indeed I was born to be a king. I came into the world so that I could testify to the truth.

38Yeah. What is truth?” said Pilate.

18:38 Pilate gives permission to execute an innocent man

(Mat. 27:15-31, Mark 15:6-20, Luke 23:13-25)

After he’d said this, Pilate went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I can’t find anything that he’s guilty of.

18:32: Jn 3:14; 12:32.

15:1 Pilate tries to interrogate Yeshua

(Jn 18:28-38, Mat. 27:1-2, Luke 23:1-5)

15First thing in the morning, the chief priests called a meeting with the elders and the religious teachers and all the council, and they ordered that Yeshua be tied up and taken over to Governor Pilate. 2There Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

You said it,” replied Yeshua.

3Then the chief priests started hurling accusations against Yeshua. 4So Pilate asked him again, “Don’t you have anything to say? Listen to all these accusations they’re making against you.”

5But Pilate was astounded that Yeshua didn’t answer any further.

27:1 Yeshua is taken to Pilate

(Mark 15:1, Luke 23:1-2, Jn 18:28-32)

27By now it was early morning, and all the chief priests and local elders discussed and agreed on their plans to have Yeshua put to death 2then they tied his arms and led him away to be handed over to Pilate, the Roman governor.

27:2 Yudas’ regret and suicide

(Acts 1:18-19)

3[ref]When Yudas, the one who had turned him in) saw that he was being sentenced to death, he regretted his actions and returned the payment to the chief priests and elders 4saying, “I’ve sinned and turned in an innocent man.”

What’s that got to do with us?” they asked. “You sort out your own problems.”

5Then Yudas threw the money down on the temple floor and went off and hanged himself.

6The chief priests took the money and decided, “We can’t legally deposit the money to the temple treasury because it’s blood money.” 7They got advice and decided to buy the potter’s field that was for sale to make it a cemetery for people from out of town, 8so that place got called ‘The field of blood’ until today.

9[ref]And so the message which had been written by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, ‘They took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one who was sold, the price set by the Israelites, 10and they gave the coins for the potter’s field, as the master directed me.’

27:10 Yeshua faces Pilate

(Mark 15:2-5, Luke 23:3-5, Jn 18:33-38)

11Meanwhile Yeshua was stood in front of the governor and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

You said it,”, responded Yeshua, 12but when he chief priests and the elders brought their accusations against him, he didn’t say anything.

13Then Pilate asked him, “Can’t you hear all the evidence against you that they’re listing?”

14But he didn’t respond, not even a single word, and this greatly surprised the governor.
