TSNTyndale Study Notes:

27:2 Tiberius Caesar appointed Pilate to be the governor (or prefect) of Judea. Pilate ruled primarily from Caesarea, not Jerusalem, from AD 26 to AD 36. Though he had sovereign power in Judea, Pilate was ultimately responsible to the legate of Syria, the central authority in the eastern portion of the Roman Empire. Josephus records several instances where Pilate’s disregard for the sanctity of Jewish customs led to revolt.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

δήσαντες αὐτὸν

/having/_bound him

Here Matthew implies that the Jewish council commanded guards to bind Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “having commanded the guards to bind him”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἀπήγαγον

˱they˲_led_away

Here Matthew implies that they led Jesus away from Caiaphas’ house. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “they led him away from Caiaphas’ house”

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

παρέδωκαν Πειλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι

gave_over_‹him› (Some words not found in SR-GNT: καὶ δήσαντες αὐτὸν ἀπήγαγον καὶ παρέδωκαν Πιλάτῳ τῷ ἡγεμόνι)

Here Matthew implies that the Jewish leaders brought Jesus to Pilate because they wanted Pilate to judge him. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make that idea more explicit. Alternate translation: “handed him over to Pilate the governor to be judged by him”
