Moff MAT Chapter 4

MAT 4 ©

4Then Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. 2He fasted forty days and forty nights and afterwards felt hungry. 3So the tempter came up and said to him, "If you are God's son, tell these stones to become loaves." 4He answered, "It is written,

Man is not to live on bread alone,

but on every word that issues from the mouth of God." 5Then the devil conveyed him to the holy city and, placing him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6said to him, "If you are God's son, throw yourself down; for it is written,

He will give his angels charge of you;

they will bear you on their hands,

lest you strike your foot against a stone." 7Jesus said to him, "It is written again, You shall not tempt the Lord your God." 8Once more the devil conveyed him to an exceedingly high mountain and showed him all the realms of the world and their grandeur; 9he said, "I will give you all that if you will fall down and worship me." 10Then Jesus told him, "Begone, Satan! it is written, You must worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone." 11At this the devil left him, and angels came up and ministered to him.

12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee; 13he left Nazaret and settled at Capharnahum beside the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali-- 14for the fulfilment of what had been said by the prophet Isaiah:

15

Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali

lying to the sea, across the Jordan,

Galilee of the Gentiles!

16

The people who sat in darkness saw a great light,

yea light dawned on those who sat in the land and the shadow of death. 17From that day Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, the Reign of heaven is near."

18As he was walking along the sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew, casting a net in the sea--for they were fishermen; 19so he said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fish for men." 20And they dropped their nets at once and followed him. 21Then going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedaeus and his brother John, mending their nets in the boat beside their father Zebedaeus. He called them, 22and they left the boat and their father at once, and went after him.

23Then he made a tour through the whole of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the Reign, and healing all the sickness and disease of the people. 24The fame of him spread all through the surrounding country, and people brought him all their sick, those who suffered from all manner of disease and pain, demoniacs, epileptics, and paralytics; he healed them all.

25And he was followed by great crowds from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from across the Jordan.
