Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”
But he answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but {on}[fn] every word [that proceeds out of the mouth][fn] of God.’ ”[fn]
Then the devil takes him to the holy city and stands him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and says to him, “If you are the son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ”[fn] 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”[fn]
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world[fn] and their glory, 9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things, if you fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go away [[behind me]],[fn] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.’ ”[fn] 11 Then the devil leaves him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
Now when {he}[fn] heard that John was handed over,[fn] he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali; 14 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, 16 The people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and for those sitting in the region and shadow of death, a light has risen for them.”[fn]
From then on, Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.”
While walking by the Sea of Galilee, {he} [fn] saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Come after[fn] me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
[Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.][fn]
And {he}[fn] went about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
And the report about him went out into all of Syria; and they brought to him all those who were ill, afflicted with various diseases and torments, [[and]][fn] those who were demon-possessed and moonstruck[fn] and paralytics, and healed them. 25 And large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and beyond the Jordan.
