Moff MAT Chapter 8

MAT 8 ©

8When he came down from the hill, he was followed by large crowds. 2A leper came up and knelt before him, saying, "If you only choose, sir, you can cleanse me"; 3so he stretched his hand out and touched him, with the words, "I do choose, be cleansed." And his leprosy was cleansed at once. 4Then Jesus told him, "See, you are not to say a word to anybody; away and show yourself to the priest and offer the gift prescribed by Moses, to notify men."

5When he entered Capharnahum an army-captain came up to him and appealed to him, 6saying, "Sir, my servant is lying ill at home with paralysis, in terrible agony." 7He replied, "I will come and heal him." 8The captain answered, "Sir, I am not fit to have you under my roof; only say the word, and my servant will be cured. 9For though I am a man under authority myself, I have soldiers under me; I tell one man to go, and he goes, I tell another to come, and he comes, I tell my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 10When Jesus heard that, he marvelled; "I tell you truly," he said to his followers, "I have never met faith like this anywhere in Israel. 11Many, I tell you, will come from east and west and take their places beside Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Realm of heaven, 12while the sons of the Realm will pass outside, into the darkness; there men will wail and gnash their teeth." 13Then Jesus said to the captain, "Go; as you have had faith, your prayer is granted." And the servant was cured at that very hour.

14On entering the house of Peter, Jesus noticed his mother-in-law was down with fever, 15so he touched her hand; the fever left her and she rose and ministered to him. 16Now when evening came they brought him many demoniacs, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all the invalids — 17that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, He took away our sicknesses and he removed our diseases.

18When Jesus saw crowds round him he gave orders for crossing to the other side. 19A scribe came up and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you anywhere"; 20Jesus said to him,

"Foxes have their holes,

wild birds have their nests,

but the Son of man has nowhere to lay his head." 21Another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, let me go and bury my father first of all"; 22Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead." 23Then he embarked in the boat, followed by his disciples. 24Now a heavy storm came on at sea, so that the boat was buried under the waves. He was sleeping. 25So the disciples went and woke him up, saying, "Help, Lord, we are drowning!" 26He said to them, "Why are you afraid? How little you trust God!" Then he got up and checked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27Men marvelled at this; they said, "What sort of man is this? the very winds and sea obey him!"

28When he reached the opposite side, the country of the Gadarenes, he was met by two demoniacs who ran out of the tombs; they were so violent that nobody could pass along the road there. 29They shrieked, "Son of God, what business have you with us? Have you come here to torture us before it is time?" 30Now, some distance away, there was a large drove of swine grazing; 31so the daemons begged him saying, "If you are going to cast us out, send us into that drove of swine." 32He said to them, "Begone!" So out they came and went to the swine, and the entire drove rushed down the steep slope into the sea and perished in the water. 33The herdsmen fled; they went off to the town and reported the whole affair of the demoniacs. 34Then all the town came out to meet Jesus, and when they saw him they begged him to move out of their district.
