Moff MAT Chapter 17

MAT 17 ©

17Six days afterwards Jesus took Peter, James and his brother John, and led them up a high hill by themselves; 2in their presence he was transfigured, his face shone like the sun, and his clothes turned white as light. 3There appeared to them Moses and Elijah, who conversed with Jesus. 4So Peter addressed Jesus and said, "Lord, it is a good thing we are here; pray let me put up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5He was still speaking when a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said,

"This is my Son, the Beloved,

in him is my delight:

listen to him." 6When the disciples heard the voice they fell on their faces in terror; 7but Jesus came forward and touched them, saying, "Rise, have no fear." 8And on raising their eyes they saw no one except Jesus all alone. 9As they went down the hill Jesus ordered them, "Tell this vision to nobody until the Son of man is raised from the dead." 10The disciples inquired of him, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?" 11He replied, "Elijah to come and restore all things? 12Nay, I tell you Elijah has already come, but they have not recognized him — they have worked their will on him. And the Son of man will suffer at their hands in the same way." 13Then the disciples realized he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

14When they reached the crowd, a man came up and knelt to him. 15"Ah, sir," he said, "have pity on my son; he is an epileptic and he suffers cruelly, he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him." 17Jesus answered, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long must I still be with you? How long have I to bear with you? Bring him here to me." 18So Jesus checked the daemon and it came out of him, and from that hour the boy was healed. 19Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and said, "Why could we not cast it out?" 20He said to them, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you truly, if you had faith the size of a grain of mustard-seed, you could say to this hill, 'Move from here to there,' and remove it would; nothing would be impossible for you."

22When his adherents mustered in Galilee Jesus told them, "The Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of men; 23they will kill him, but on the third day he will be raised." They were greatly distressed at this.

24When they reached Capharnahum, the collectors of the temple-tax came and asked Peter, "Does your teacher not pay the temple-tax?" 25He said, "Yes." But when he went indoors Jesus spoke first; "Tell me, Simon," he said, "from whom do earthly kings collect customs or taxes? Is it from their own people or from aliens?" 26"From aliens," he said. Then Jesus said to him, "So their own people are exempt. 27However, not to give any offence to them, go to the sea, throw a hook in, and take the first fish you bring up. Open its mouth and you will find a five-shilling piece; take that and give it to them for me and for yourself."
