μνημονεύω

Strong’s: G3421

Associated OET lemmas: μνημονεύω

Notes: μνημονεύω[d] and μνεία[b] overlap with the domain of Communication (33), since the meaning involves not only remembering but making mention of a person in prayer. It is possible, however, that the prayer would be inaudible, that is to say, silent prayer.

Form 1

Part of speech: verb

Related lemmas: μιμνῄσκομαι

Sense 1: to remember, to recall, to think about again, memory, remembrance

Semantic entry: 29.7

Semantic domains: Memory and Recall

Subdomains: Recalling from Memory

Definition: to recall information from memory, but without necessarily the implication that persons have actually forgotten

Notes: In some languages the process of remembering is expressed idiomatically, for example, ‘to find one’s thoughts again’ or ‘to see again in one’s heart’ or ‘to have one’s liver repeat the words.’

Sense 3: to recall, to remember

Semantic entry: 29.16

Semantic domains: Memory and Recall

Subdomains: Recalling and Responding with Appropriate Action

Definition: to recall or be aware of information, and as a result to respond in an appropriate manner (for example, punishing, helping, honoring, etc., depending upon the context)

Notes: μνημονεύω in RV REV 18:5 · LV REV 18:5 · Read together REV 18:5 implies much more than God’s mental state in remembering the crimes of Babylon. The reference is clearly to God’s both remembering and punishing. Similarly, in RV GAL 2:10 · LV GAL 2:10 · Read together GAL 2:10 μνημονεύω refers to more than mere mental awareness of those in need, for the process of recall involves doing something about the needy (compare 29.7: μιμνῄσκω / 29.7: μνεία / 29.7: μνήμη / 29.7: μνημονεύω). In a number of languages it may be necessary to make this implication quite specific, for example, ‘all they asked was that we should be concerned for the needy of their group.’
