OET (OET-LV)And_he/it_saw Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) DOM_that there_[was] grain in/on/at/with_Miʦrayim and_he/it_said Yaˊₐqoⱱ/(Jacob) to_sons_his to/for_what are_you_all_looking_at_one_another.

OET (OET-RV)Meanwhile (up in the Canaan region), Yacob heard that there was grain available in Egypt, so he said to his sons, “Why are you just standing there looking at each other?

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: writing-newevent

וַיַּ֣רְא יַעֲקֹ֔ב כִּ֥י יֶשׁ־שֶׁ֖בֶר בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם

and=he/it_saw Yaakob that/for/because/then/when there_was grain in/on/at/with,Egypt

This verse begins a new episode which overlaps in time with some of what was happening in chapter 41. Consider what is the best way to begin this episode in your language. Alternate translation: “Meanwhile in the land of Canaan, when Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in the country of Egypt,” or “… when Jacob found out that he could buy grain in Egypt,”

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ לְבָנָ֔יו

and=he/it_said Yaakob to,sons,his

Alternate translation: “he asked his sons,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / rquestion

לָ֖מָּה תִּתְרָאֽוּ

to/for=what looking_at_each_other

Jacob uses this rhetorical question to get his sons to take action and do what he says next. Consider what is the best way to communicate that in your language. Alternate translation: “What are you waiting for?” or “Do not just sit here staring at each other!” or “Do not just stand there doing nothing!”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

42:1–44:34 Joseph did several unusual things to his brothers when they came looking for grain. The last time Joseph had been with them, they were filled with jealousy, hatred, and anger; they attempted to destroy their brother, and they deceived their father. Joseph put them through various tests, similar to the trying situations they had put him through, to see if they had changed.
