AICNT YHN Chapter 9

YHN 9 ©

9And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth [[sitting]].[fn] 2And his disciples asked him, [saying,][fn] “Rabbi, who sinned, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?”

3Jesus answered [[and he said to them]],[fn] “Neither this one sinned nor his parents, but so that the works of God might be revealed in him.

4“We[fn] must work the works of the one who sent me while it is day; night is coming when no one can work.

5“As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

6Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud from the saliva and [he][fn] smeared [the mud][fn] on his eyes [[of the blind man]].[fn] 7And he said [to him],[fn] “Go, [wash][fn] in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated, Sent). So he went [and washed and came back][fn] seeing.

8Then {the}[fn] neighbors and those who had seen him before as a {beggar}[fn] said, “Is not this the one who used to sit and beg?” 9Some said [that],[fn] “This is he,” {others said, “No, but}[fn] he is like him.” [[But]][fn] He said [that],[fn] “I am.”

10[So][fn] {They}[fn] said to him [then],[fn] “How then were your eyes opened?” 11He answered [[and said]],[fn] “The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to [[the pool of]][fn] Siloam and wash’; so I went and {washed and received my sight}.”[fn]

12{And}[fn] they said to him, “Where is he?” He says [[to them]][fn] “I do not know.”

13They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. 14It was the Sabbath [on the day][fn] when Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes. 15So the Pharisees again asked him how he had received his sight. And he said to them, “He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”

16Some of the Pharisees said, “This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.” [But][fn] Others said, “How can a sinful man do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17So they said to the [[once]][fn] blind man again, “What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”

18[So][fn] The Jews did not believe [that he had been blind and had received his sight][fn] until they called the parents [[of him]][fn] [of the one who had received his sight][fn] 19and asked them, [saying][fn] “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How [then][fn] does he now see?”

20[So][fn] [[To them]][fn] His parents answered them, “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind; 21but how he [now][fn] sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. [Ask him;][fn] He is of age. [He will speak for himself.]”[fn]

22His parents said these things because they feared the Jews; for the Jews had already agreed that if anyone should confess him as Christ, he was to be put out of the synagogue. 23Because of this, his parents said, [that][fn] “He is of age, ask him.”

24So for the second time they called {the man}[fn] who had been blind and said to him, “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”

25So he answered [[and said]],[fn] “Whether he is a sinner I do not know; one thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see.”

26[Therefore][fn] They said to him [[again]],[fn] “What did he do to you? [[And]][fn] How did he open your eyes?”

27He answered them, “I have told you already, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you [[therefore]][fn] also want to become his disciples?”

28[And][fn] They reviled him, saying, “You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. 29[[But]][fn] We know that God has spoken to Moses [[, and that God does not listen to sinners]];[fn] but we do not know where this man is from.”

30[[But]][fn] The man answered and said [to them]],[fn] “{For this is the astonishing thing},[fn] that you do not know where he is from, and yet he opened my eyes. 31[[But]][fn] We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 32Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. 33If this man were not from God, he could do nothing.”

34They answered him, “You were born in utter sin, and would you teach us?” And they cast him out.

35[[But]][fn] Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said [[to him]],[fn] “Do you believe in the Son of {Man}?”[fn] 36[He answered][fn] [and said,][fn] “Who is {the Lord,}[fn] that I may believe in him?” 37[[But]][fn] Jesus {said}[fn] to him, “You have both seen him, and it is he who is talking with you.” 38[Then he said, “I believe, Lord,” and he worshiped[fn] him. 39And Jesus said,][fn] “I came into this world for judgment, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind.”

40[[And]][fn] The ones with him, having heard [these things][fn] from the Pharisees, said to him, “Are we also blind?” 41Jesus [[therefore]][fn] said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say, ‘We see.’ [[And]][fn] [[Therefore]][fn] Your sins remain.”
