AICNT YHN Chapter 7

YHN 7 ©

7[And][fn] After this, Jesus was walking in Galilee; for he did not {want}[fn] to walk in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him.

2Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Tabernacles, was near. 3Therefore his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to {Judea},[fn] so that your disciples also may see the works you are doing; 4for no one does anything in secret and seeks [himself][fn] to be in openness. If you do these things, reveal [yourself][fn] to the world.” 5For even his brothers did not believe in him [[then]].[fn]

6Jesus [then][fn] says to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready. 7The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify [of it,][fn] that its works are evil. 8You go up to {the}[fn] feast; I am not [[yet]][fn] going up to this feast, for my time has not yet been fulfilled.” 9[And][fn] Having said these things [[to them]],[fn] he remained in Galilee.

10But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly, but [as it were][fn] in secret. 11So the Jews sought him at the feast and said, “Where is that man?” 12And there was [much][fn] murmuring among the people concerning him. Some said, “He is good”; others [however][fn] said, “No, but he deceives the people.” 13However, no one spoke openly about him for fear of the Jews.

14Now about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. 15And the Jews marveled, saying, “How does this man know letters, having never learned?”

16Jesus [then][fn] answered them and said, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. 17If anyone desires [to do][fn] his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own authority.

18“He who speaks from himself seeks his own [glory];[fn] but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent {him},[fn] this one is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

19“Did not Moses give you the law [, and yet none of you keeps the law]?[fn] Why do you seek to kill me?” 20[The crowd answered [[and said]],[fn] “You have a demon; who is seeking to kill you?”][fn]

21Jesus answered and said [to them],[fn] “I did one work, and you [all][fn] marvel. 22[For this reason,][fn] Moses gave you circumcision - not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers - and on the Sabbath, you circumcise a man. 23[So][fn] If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, [[why]][fn] are you angry with me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? 24Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”

25[Therefore][fn]some of the people of Jerusalem said, “Is this not the one they seek to kill? 26And behold, he speaks openly, and they say nothing [to him].[fn] Could it be that the rulers truly knew that this is [[truly]][fn] the Christ? 27But we know where this man is from; [but][fn] when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.”

28Then Jesus cried out, as he taught in the temple, saying, “You both know me, and you know where I am from; and I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you do not know. 29[But][fn] I know him, for I am from him, and he sent me.”

30[Therefore][fn] they were seeking to take him; but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.

31And many from the crowd believed in him and said, [that][fn] “When the Christ comes, will he do more [[of these]][fn] signs than these which this man has done?”

32[[But]][fn] The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring [these things][fn] about him, and [the chief priests and the Pharisees][fn] sent officers to arrest him.

33Therefore Jesus said [[to them]],[fn] “For a little while longer I am with you, and then I go to the one who sent me. 34You will seek me and not find [me],[fn] and where I am, you cannot come [[there]].”[fn]

35So the Jews said [to themselves],[fn] “Where is this man going to go that we will not find him? Does he intend to go to the Dispersion among the Greeks and teach the Greeks? 36What is this statement that he said, ‘You will seek me and not find [me],[fn] and where I am, you cannot come?’”

37On the last day [, the great day][fn] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come [to me][fn] and drink. 38The one who believes in me, as the Scripture said, ‘Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.’” 39But this he said about the Spirit, which those who believed in him were [about][fn] to receive; for the [[Holy]][fn] Spirit was not yet [[upon them]],[fn] because Jesus was not yet glorified.

40{Some}[fn] of the crowd, therefore, when they heard these words[fn] [[of him]][fn] were saying, [[that]][fn] “This is truly the prophet.” 41Others said, [[that]][fn] [“This is the Christ,” but {some}[fn] said,][fn] “Does the Christ come from Galilee? 42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”[fn]

43So a division occurred in the crowd because of him. 44And some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him.

45So the officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46The servants answered [[and said]],[fn] “Never has a man spoken [[in this way]].”[fn] 47[So][fn] The Pharisees answered [[them]],[fn] “Have you also been deceived? 48Has any of the rulers or the Pharisees believed in him? 49But these crowds, who do not know the law, are accursed.”[fn]

50Nicodemus, [who had come to him [earlier][fn] [[by night]],[fn]][fn] being one of them, says to them, 51“Does not our law judge a man unless it [first][fn] hears [from him][fn] and {knows what he is doing}[fn] ?”

52They answered and said to him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search [[the scriptures]][fn] and see that no prophet {arises}[fn] from Galilee.”[fn]
