OET (OET-LV)And it_became that with all the people to_be_immersed, and Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) having_been_immersed, and praying the heaven to_be_opened_up,

OET (OET-RV) One day along with all the other people being immersed, Yeshua had come and been immersed, and while he prayed, the sky opened up

uW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: figures-of-speech / events

ἐγένετο δὲ

˱it˲_became and

The previous verse says that Herod put John in prison. It might be helpful to make it clear that the account that starts in this verse happened before John was arrested. UST does that by starting this verse with “but before Herod did that.”

Note 2 topic: writing-newevent

ἐγένετο δὲ

˱it˲_became and

Luke uses this phrase to introduce a new event in the story. Use a word, phrase, or other method in your language that is natural for introducing a new event.

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

βαπτισθῆναι ἅπαντα τὸν λαὸν

/to_be/_baptized all the people

If it would be helpful in your language, you could express this with an active form, and you could state who did the action. Alternate translation: “while John was baptizing all the people who came to him”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / hyperbole

ἅπαντα τὸν λαὸν

all the people

The phrase all the people is a generalization for emphasis. Alternate translation: “all the people who came to him”

Note 5 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

καὶ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθέντος

and Jesus /having_been/_baptized

You could express this with an active form. Alternate translation: “John also baptized Jesus”

Note 6 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

ἀνεῳχθῆναι τὸν οὐρανὸν

/to_be/_opened_up ¬the heaven

You could express this with an active form. This was more than a simple clearing of the clouds, but it is not clear exactly what the expression means, so it may be best not to try to specify what happened too exactly. Alternate translation: “the sky opened up”

TSN Tyndale Study Notes:

3:21 As he was praying: Luke emphasizes Jesus’ trust and reliance on God in prayer (5:16; 6:12; 9:18, 28; 11:1; 22:32, 41, 44; 23:34, 46).
• the heavens opened: This image was a sign of God’s presence (Isa 64:1), divine revelation (Ezek 1:1; John 1:51), and the end of an age (Rev 4:1; 15:5; 19:11).
