In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 [and][fn] saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.” 3 For this is the one spoken of {through}[fn] the prophet Isaiah, saying, “A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’ ”[fn]
Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan went out to him, 6 and they were baptized in the Jordan [river][fn] by him, confessing their sins.
But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to {his}[fn] baptism, he said to them, “Brood[fn] of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
Indeed, the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water for repentance, but the one coming [after me][fn] is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; that one will baptize you with the Holy Spirit[fn] [and fire].[fn] 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear[fn] his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
Then Jesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But [John][fn] tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered {and said to him},[fn] “Allow it now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
{But}[fn] having been baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened [to him],[fn] and he saw [the] Spirit[fn] of God descending like a dove [and][fn] coming upon him; 17 and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
