12 After the deportation to Babylon, Jeconiah fathered Shealtiel, Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel, 13 Zerubbabel fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim, Eliakim fathered Azor, 14 Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, Achim fathered Eliud, 15 Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, Matthan fathered Jacob, 16 Jacob fathered Joseph the husband[fn] of Mary, from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ are fourteen generations.
18 Now the {genesis}[fn] of [Jesus][fn] Christ took place as follows: [[For]][fn] After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.[fn] 19 And Joseph her husband, being a just man and not wanting to {disgrace her},[fn] planned to divorce her secretly.
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.[fn] 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, with us is God).[fn]
24 When Joseph {woke}[fn] from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 and he did not know her until she gave birth to {a son}[fn] and he called his name Jesus.
2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, magi[fn] from the east arrived in Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship[fn] him.”
3 And when King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, 4 and gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 And they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for thus it has been written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ”[fn]
7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, “Go and search carefully for the child; and when you have found him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship him.”
9 And having heard the king, they went on their way, and behold, the star which they had seen in the east, led them until it came and stood over where the child was. 10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And entering the house, they {saw}[fn] the child with Mary his mother; and falling down, they worshiped[fn] him; and opening their treasures, they presented to him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by another way.
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, “Arise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy it.” 14 So he arose, took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod; that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”[fn]
16 Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked by the magi, was very angry, and sending forth, he killed all the children in Bethlehem and in all its borders, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had carefully inquired from the magi.
17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken {through}[fn] Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, [[lamentation and]][fn] weeping and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be comforted, because they are no more.”[fn]
19 Now when Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, 20 saying, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel; for those who sought the child's life are dead.”
21 So he got up, took the child and his mother, and {entered}[fn] into the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning [over][fn] Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the region of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a city called Nazareth; so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.[fn]
3 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 [and][fn] saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.” 3 For this is the one spoken of {through}[fn] the prophet Isaiah, saying, “A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’ ”[fn]
4 Now John himself had a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan went out to him, 6 and they were baptized in the Jordan [river][fn] by him, confessing their sins.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to {his}[fn] baptism, he said to them, “Brood[fn] of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Therefore, produce fruit worthy of repentance 9 and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that God is able to raise up children for Abraham from these stones.
10 Indeed, the axe is already laid at the root of the trees; therefore, every tree not producing good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 I indeed baptize you with water for repentance, but the one coming [after me][fn] is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; that one will baptize you with the Holy Spirit[fn] [and fire].[fn] 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear[fn] his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
13 Then Jesus comes from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 But [John][fn] tried to prevent him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered {and said to him},[fn] “Allow it now, for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
16 {But}[fn] having been baptized, Jesus immediately went up from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened [to him],[fn] and he saw [the] Spirit[fn] of God descending like a dove [and][fn] coming upon him; 17 and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
4 Then Jesus was led up into the wilderness by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”
4 But he answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but {on}[fn] every word [that proceeds out of the mouth][fn] of God.’ ”[fn]
5 Then the devil takes him to the holy city and stands him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and says to him, “If you are the son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’ ”[fn] 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”[fn]
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world[fn] and their glory, 9 And he said to him, “I will give you all these things, if you fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, “Go away [[behind me]],[fn] Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone.’ ”[fn] 11 Then the devil leaves him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.
12 Now when {he}[fn] heard that John was handed over,[fn] he withdrew into Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali; 14 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, 15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, 16 The people sitting in darkness saw a great light, and for those sitting in the region and shadow of death, a light has risen for them.”[fn]
17 From then on, Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of the heavens has come near.”
18 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, {he} [fn] saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Come after[fn] me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
21 [Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.][fn]
23 And {he}[fn] went about in all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
24 And the report about him went out into all of Syria; and they brought to him all those who were ill, afflicted with various diseases and torments, [[and]][fn] those who were demon-possessed and moonstruck[fn] and paralytics, and healed them. 25 And large crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and beyond the Jordan.
5 And seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying,
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek,[fn] for they themselves will inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of the heavens.
11 “Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you say every evil [word][fn] against you [falsely] on my account.
12 “Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for your reward is great in the heavens; for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt becomes foolish,[fn] with what will it be salted? It is good for nothing anymore, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city cannot be hidden when it is set on a hill; 15 nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16 “In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good [works][fn] and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17 “Do not think that I came to abolish the law or the prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
18 “For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota or one stroke will pass from the law until [when][fn] all is accomplished.
19 “Whoever, therefore, breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so, will be called least in the kingdom of the heavens[; but whoever does and teaches them, this one will be called great in the kingdom of the heavens].[fn]
20 [“For I say to you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of the heavens.][fn]
21 “You have heard that it was said to the elders,[fn] ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’[fn] 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with their brother [[without cause]][fn] will be liable to judgment; whoever says to their brother, ‘Raca,’[fn] will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to the hell[fn] of fire.
23 “So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
25 “Be quick to settle matters with your adversary, while you are still with him on the way, lest your adversary hand you over to the judge, and the judge [[hand you over]][fn] to the officer, and you be thrown into prison; 26 truly, I say to you, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny.
27 “You have heard that it was said [[to the elders]],[fn] ‘You shall not commit adultery.’[fn] 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 “But if your right eye causes you to stumble, remove it and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish, and not your whole body be thrown into Gehenna.[fn]
30 [“And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away from you; for it is better for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should go into Gehenna. 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the elders,[fn] ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall fulfill to the Lord your oaths.’[fn] 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all; neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God, 35 nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet, nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King, 36 nor shall you swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37 But let your word be ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything more than this is from the evil one.
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’[fn] 39 But I say to you, do not resist the evil one; but whoever {strikes}[fn] you on {the}[fn] right cheek, turn to him the other also; 40 and if anyone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well; 41 and whoever forces you to go one mile,[fn] go with him two. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’[fn] 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, [[bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you,]][fn] and pray for those who [[mistreat you and]][fn] persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in the heavens; for he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46 “For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do {the same}?[fn] 47 And if you greet your {brothers}[fn] only, what more are you doing? Do not even the {Gentiles}[fn] do {the same}?[fn]
48 “Therefore, you shall be perfect, [[just]][fn] as your {heavenly Father}[fn] is perfect.”
6 “Be careful [then][fn] not to {practice your righteousness}[fn] in front of men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise, you have no reward from your Father who is in the heavens.
2 “So when you give to the needy, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by men; truly I say to you, they have received their reward.
3 “But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret [[himself]][fn] will reward you [[openly]].[fn]
5 “And when you pray, {do not be}[fn] like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by men; truly I say to you, they have received their reward.
6 “But when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you [[in the open]].[fn]
7 “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Therefore do not be like them; for [[God]][fn] your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father who is in the heavens; Let your name be sanctified;[fn] 10 Let your kingdom come; let your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth. 11 Give us today our daily bread; 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven[fn] our debtors; 13 And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, [[for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen]][fn]
14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; 15 but if you do not forgive men [their trespasses],[fn] neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
16 “But when you fast, do not become [[just]][fn] like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance, for they disfigure their faces so that they may appear to men to be fasting. Truly I say to you [[that]],[fn] they have their reward.” 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you may not appear to men as fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you [[in the open]].[fn]
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in nor steal; 21 for where {your}[fn] treasure is, there your heart will be[ also].[fn]
22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, if your eye is clear,[fn] your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat [[or what you will drink]],[fn] nor about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they?
27 “And which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?
28 “And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; 29 yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 “Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ Or, ‘What shall we drink?’ Or, ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For all these things the nations seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
33 “But seek first the kingdom [of God][fn] and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
34 “Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about {itself}.[fn] Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
7 “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged; 2 for with the judgment you judge, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be {measured}[fn] to you.
3 “Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ while the log[fn] is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite, first remove the log from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.
6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs, nor throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you.
7 “Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you; 8 for everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it {will be}[fn] opened.
9 “Or which one of you men, [[if]][fn] whom his son will ask for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or [[if]][fn] even he will ask for a fish, will give him a serpent?
11 “If you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in the heavens give good things to those who ask him.
12 Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets.
13 “Enter through the narrow gate; for wide [is the gate][fn] and spacious is the road that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter through it; 14 {how}[fn] narrow is the gate and constricted is the road that leads to life, and few are those who find it.
15 “Beware [then][fn] of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 By their fruits you will recognize them. Do people gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 “So every good tree produces good fruits, but the rotten[fn] tree produces evil fruits. 18 A good tree cannot produce evil fruits, nor can a rotten tree produce good fruits. 19 Every tree that does not produce good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore, by their fruits you will recognize them.
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in {the heavens}.[fn] 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name cast out demons, and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 And then I will confess to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.’
24 “Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and does them {will be like}[fn] a wise man who built his house on the rock; 25 and the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
26 “And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand; 27 and the rain came down, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and struck against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.”
28 And it happened when Jesus {finished}[fn] these words, the crowds were astonished at his teaching; 29 for he was teaching them as one having authority and not as {their}[fn] scribes.
8 And when he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him. 2 And behold, a leper came up and worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” 3 And [[Jesus]][fn] stretching out his hand, he touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”
5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him, pleading with him, 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, terribly tormented.” 7 And {he}[fn] said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 {And}[fn] the centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy for you to come under my roof, but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I too am a man [[being appointed]],[fn] under authority, having soldiers under me, and I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled[fn] and said to those following him, “Truly, I tell you, I have not found such great faith in Israel. 11 And I tell you that many will come from the east and the west and will recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of the heavens, 12 but the sons of the kingdom[fn] will be thrown into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go, as you have believed, let it be done to you.” And {the}[fn] servant was healed in that hour.
14 And when Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying down and suffering from a fever; 15 and he touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she got up and served {him}.[fn]
16 When evening came, they brought to him many who were demon-possessed; and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, “He took our weaknesses, and he bore the diseases.”[fn]
18 And when Jesus saw {a crowd}[fn] around him, he ordered to go to the other side. 19 And one scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have dens and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.”
21 But another of {the}[fn] disciples said to him, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
22 But {Jesus}[fn] {says}[fn] to him, “Follow me and let the dead bury their own dead.”
23 And when he got into {a}[fn] boat, his disciples followed him. 24 And behold, a great earthquake[fn] occurred in the sea, so that the boat was being covered by the waves, but he was sleeping. 25 And {they}[fn] came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us, we are perishing.” 26 And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
27 And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?”
28 And when he came to the other side, to the country of the {Gadarenes},[fn] two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, extremely fierce, so that no one could pass by that way. 29 And behold, they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with you, [[Jesus]][fn] Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” 30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding at a distance from them. 31 The demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, {send us}[fn] into the herd of pigs.” 32 And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the [[heard of]][fn] pigs; and behold, the whole herd [[of pigs]][fn] rushed down the steep bank into the sea and died in the waters.
33 The herdsmen fled, and going into the city, they reported everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to depart from their region.
9 And entering into {a}[fn] boat, he crossed over and came to his own city. 2 And behold, they brought to him a paralytic lying on a bed. And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Take courage, child, your sins {are forgiven}.”[fn]
3 And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This one blasphemes.” 4 And {seeing}[fn] their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? 5 For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 6 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” – then he says to the paralytic, “Rise, take up your bed and go to your house.” 7 And rising, he went to his house.
8 But when the crowds saw this, they {were filled with awe}[fn] and glorified the God who had given such authority to men.
9 And as Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man sitting at the tax booth, called Matthew, and said to him, “Follow me.” And rising up, he followed him. 10 And it happened that as he reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. 11 And the Pharisees, having seen this, said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But {he},[fn] having heard, said to them, “Those who are strong have no need of a physician, but those who are ill. 13 Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’[fn] For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners [[to repentance]].”[fn]
14 Then the disciples of John came to him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast [often], but your disciples do not fast?”
15 And Jesus said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.
16 “No one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear occurs. 17 Nor do they put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wineskins burst, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
18 While he was saying these things to them, behold, {a}[fn] ruler [came and][fn] worshiped[fn] him, saying, “My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.” 19 And Jesus got up and followed him, and so did his disciples.
20 [fn]And behold, a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the fringe[fn] of his garment; 21 for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be saved.”
22 But {Jesus}[fn] {having turned}[fn] and saw her, and said, “Take courage, daughter; your faith has saved you.” And the woman was saved from that hour.
23 And when Jesus came to the ruler's house and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd, 24 {he said},[fn] “Go away, for the girl has not died, but is sleeping.” And they laughed at him. 25 But when the crowd had been put out, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And this report went out into all that land.
27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed [him],[fn] crying out and saying, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 And when he had come into the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows about this.” 31 But they went out and spread the news about him throughout that whole land.
32 As they were going out, behold, they brought to him [a man][fn] who was mute and demon-possessed. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying [[that]],[fn] “Never has it been seen like this in Israel.” 34 [But the Pharisees said, “By the ruler of the demons he casts out the demons.”][fn]
35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and every sickness [[among the people]].[fn]
36 Seeing the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were {harassed}[fn] and helpless,[fn] like sheep not having a shepherd.
37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few; 38 therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.”
10 And calling to him his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so as to cast them out and to heal every disease and every infirmity.
2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew [[also]][fn] his brother; and James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, and [[Lebbaeus, who was called]] Thaddaeus;[fn] 4 Simon the {Cananaean},[fn] and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
5 Jesus sent out these twelve, instructing them, saying, “Do not go on the road to the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7 “As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of the heavens has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, [raise the dead],[fn] cleanse the lepers, cast out demons; freely you have received, freely give.
9 “Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your belts, 10 nor a bag for the journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor {a staff};[fn] for the worker is worthy of his food.
11 “And into whatever city or village you enter, inquire who in it is worthy; and stay there until you leave.
12 “As you enter the house, greet it [[saying Peace to this house!]];[fn] 13 and if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 “And whoever does not receive you, nor listen to your words, as you {go out of}[fn] [that house or][fn] city, shake off the dust from your feet.
15 “Truly I say to you, it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city.
16 “Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; therefore, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
17 “But beware of men; for they will deliver you over to councils and in their synagogues they will flog you; 18 and you will be brought before governors and kings for my sake, as a testimony to them and to the nations.
19 “But when they deliver you up, do not be anxious about how or what you should speak; for it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21 “And brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and put them to death. 22 And you will be hated by all because of my name; but the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved.
23 “But when they persecute you in this city, flee to {the other};[fn] for truly I say to you, you will not finish the cities of Israel until the Son of Man comes.
24 “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a servant above the master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to become like the teacher, and the servant like the master. If they have called the head of the house {Beelzebul},[fn] how much more the members of the household!
26 “So do not fear them; for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known. 27 What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, proclaim on the rooftops.
28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear the one who can destroy both [[the]][fn] soul and [[the]] body in Gehenna.[fn]
29 “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 So do not fear; you are worth more than many sparrows.
32 “Therefore, everyone who acknowledges[fn] me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father who is in heaven; 33 but whoever denies me before men, I will also deny them before my Father who is in [the] heavens.
34 “Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I came to divide a person according to their father, and daughter against her mother, and a bride against her mother-in-law, 36 And the enemies of the person will be the members of their household.
37 “The one who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and the one who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38 and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.
39 “The one who finds their life will lose it, and the one who loses their life for my sake will find it.
40 “The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.
41 “The one who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And {whoever}[fn] gives one of these little ones a cup of cold water [only],[fn] in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.”
11 And it happened when Jesus finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he went from there to teach and preach in their cities.
2 Now when John heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent {by}[fn] his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, and [the lame walk,][fn] lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, [and][fn] the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”
7 As these went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 But what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in the houses of kings. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
10 “[[For]][fn] This is about whom it is written, ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face, Who will prepare the way before you.’[fn]
11 “Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he.
12 “But from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing,[fn] and forceful men seize it. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John; 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come.[fn] 15 He who has ears [to hear],[fn] let him hear.
16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces {who call out}[fn] to others, 17 saying, ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned [for you],[fn] and you did not lament.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ And wisdom is justified by her {works}.”[fn]
20 Then {he}[fn] began to denounce the cities in which most of {his}[fn] mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: 21 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will {descend}[fn] to Hades; for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, {it}[fn] would have remained until this day. 24 But I say to you that it will be more bearable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.
25 At that time, Jesus answered and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to infants; 26 Yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
27 “All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, nor does anyone know the Father except the Son and to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 “Come [to me],[fn] all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls; 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
12 At that time, Jesus went on the Sabbath through the grainfields; and his disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, “Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.”
3 He said to them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those with him, 4 How did he enter into the house of God and eat the bread of the Presence, which it was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests alone?
5 “Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless? 6 But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.
7 “And if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’[fn] you would not have condemned the guiltless. 8 For the Son of Man is lord [[even of]][fn] of the Sabbath.”
9 And moving on from there, he came into their synagogue; 10 and behold, [[there was]][fn] a man with a withered hand. And they questioned him, saying, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” - so that they might accuse him.
11 But he said to them, “Which of you, having one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore, it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy [like the other].[fn]
14 But the Pharisees went out and took counsel against him, as to how they might destroy him.
15 But Jesus, knowing this, withdrew from there. And many [crowds][fn] followed him, and he healed them all, 16 and he admonished them not to make him known, 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying, 18 “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, My beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased; I will put my spirit upon it, And judgment to the nations[fn] he will proclaim. 19 He will not quarrel nor cry out. No one will hear its voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not extinguish, until he brings forth judgment to victory. 21 And in his name, nations[fn] will hope.”[fn]
22 Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the [[blind and]][fn] mute man [[both]][fn] spoke and saw. 23 And all the crowds were amazed and said, “Could this be the son of David?”[fn]
24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “This one does not cast out demons except by {Beelzebul},[fn] the ruler of the demons.”
25 [[Jesus]][fn] Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore, they will be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
29 “Or how can someone enter into the house of the strong man and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house.
30 “He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters.
31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven [[men]].[fn] 32 And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit,[fn] it will not be forgiven him, neither in this [[present]][fn] age nor in the one to come.
33 “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree rotten[fn] and its fruit rotten; for from the fruit the tree is known.
34 “Offspring of vipers! How can you speak good things, being evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
35 “The good person out of the good treasure [[of his heart]][fn] brings forth good, and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth evil.
36 “I tell you that for every idle word that people [[may]][fn] speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment; 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
38 Then some of the scribes [and Pharisees][fn] answered [him],[fn] saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.”
39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 For just as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights.[fn]
41 “Men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
42 “The queen of the South will rise up[fn] at the judgment with this generation and will condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
43 “When the unclean spirit goes out from a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that person becomes worse than the first. So it will be also with this evil generation.”
46 While he was still speaking to the crowds, behold, his mother and his brothers were standing outside, seeking to speak to him. 47 [Someone said to him, “Behold, your mother and your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with you.”][fn] 48 But he, having responded, said to the one speaking to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Behold, my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
13 [[But]][fn] In that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat by the sea. 2 And large crowds gathered to him, so that he got into a boat and sat down, and all the crowd stood on the shore.
3 And he spoke to them many things in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow. 4 And as he was sowing, some seeds fell by the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly because they had no depth of soil. 6 But when the sun rose, they were scorched, and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. 8 Other seeds fell on good soil and produced fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. 9 He who has ears [[to hear]],[fn] let him hear.”
10 And the disciples came and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” 11 But in response, he said [to them],[fn] “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of the heavens, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
13 “Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. 14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, saying, ‘You will hear with your ears and will not understand, and seeing you will see and will not perceive. 15 For the heart of this people has become dull, and they heard with heavy ears, and their eyes were blinded, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.’[fn]
16 “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.
17 “Truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see and did not see, and to hear what you hear and did not hear.
18 “Therefore, hear the parable of the sower. 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand, the evil one comes and snatches what has been sown in his heart; this is the one sown along the path. 20 The one sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately takes and receives it with joy, 21 yet has no root in themselves but is temporary; when tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, they immediately fall away.[fn] 22 But the one sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the worry of the age and the deceit of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 But the one sown on the good ground, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”
24 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of the heavens is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while the men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. 26 When the wheat sprouted and produced grain, then the weeds also appeared. 27 The servants of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you uproot the wheat along with them. 30 Allow both to grow together until the harvest, and at the time of the harvest I will tell the reapers, First gather the weeds and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.’ ”
31 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of the heavens is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; 32 which indeed is smaller than all the seeds, but when it has grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”
33 He spoke another parable to them: “The kingdom of the heavens is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of flour until it was all leavened.”
34 Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the crowds, and without a parable, he spoke nothing to them, 35 so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, “I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation [of the world].”[fn][fn]
36 Then, leaving the crowds, he came into the house. And his disciples approached him, saying, “Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field.”
37 But he answered and said [[to them]],[fn] “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world, and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.
40 “Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so it will be at the end of {the}[fn] age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all the stumbling blocks and those who practice lawlessness 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The one who has ears [[to hear]],[fn] let him hear.
44 “The kingdom of the heavens is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and from his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a merchant, seeking fine pearls;
46 “And having found one very valuable pearl, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
47 “Again, the kingdom of the heavens is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind; 48 when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into containers, but threw out the bad. 49 So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come out and separate the evil from among the righteous 50 and throw them into the furnace of fire; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 [[Jesus says to them,]][fn] “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes [[Lord]].”[fn]
52 And he said to them, “Therefore every scribe who has been trained {for}[fn] the kingdom of the heavens is like a master of a house, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”
53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there. 54 And coming to his hometown, he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this one get this wisdom and these mighty works? 55 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and {Joseph}[fn] and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this one get all these things?” 57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not perform many miracles there because of their unbelief.
14 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus, 2 and said to his servants, “This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and that is why these powers are at work in him.”
3 For Herod had arrested John, bound [him],[fn] and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip; 4 for John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 5 And although he wanted to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they regarded him as a prophet.
6 But when Herod's birthday {came},[fn] the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst and pleased Herod, 7 so he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 And she, prompted by her mother, said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 9 And the king, being distressed because of the oaths and those reclining at the table with him [[nevertheless]],[fn] ordered it to be given, 10 and he sent and had John beheaded in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12 And his disciples came and took the {body}[fn] and buried it, and they went and reported to Jesus.
13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place by himself; and when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When {he}[fn] went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick.
15 When it was evening, {the}[fn] disciples came to him and said, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is now late; send the crowds away so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”
16 But [Jesus] said to them, “They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.”
19 And having ordered the crowds to recline on the grass, taking the five loaves and the two fish, looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. 20 And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full. 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
22 And immediately {he}[fn] compelled {the}[fn] disciples to get into {a}[fn] boat and go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after dismissing the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone.
24 But the boat was already many stadia away from the land,[fn] being battered by the waves, for the wind was against it. 25 In the fourth watch of the night, {he came}[fn] to them walking on the sea.
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately [Jesus] spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 And he said, “Come.” And getting down from the boat, Peter walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But seeing the [strong][fn] wind, he became afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus, stretching out his hand, took hold of him and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”
32 And when they had climbed into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat [[having come]][fn] worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”
34 And crossing over, they came {to}[fn] the land of Gennesaret. 35 And recognizing him, the men of that place sent word to the whole surrounding region and brought to him all those who were suffering. 36 And they were begging him that they might [[at least]][fn] only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well.
15 Then Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem come to Jesus, saying, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash {when they eat bread with their hands}.”[fn]
3 But he answered them, “Why do you also break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God {said},[fn] ‘Honor your father and mother,’ and, ‘Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.’[fn] 5 {But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Gift, whatever you might benefit from me,” he need not honor his father}.’[fn] 6 Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
7 “Hypocrites,[fn] Isaiah prophesied well about you, saying,
8 ‘{This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far away from me};[fn] 9 But they worship me in vain, teaching doctrines, commandments of men.’ ”[fn]
10 And calling the crowd to him, he said to them, “Listen and understand: 11 it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.”
12 Then the[fn] disciples came and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”
13 He answered, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. 14 Let them alone; they are blind guides [of the blind].[fn] If a blind person leads a blind person, both will fall into a pit.”
15 But Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.”
16 And {he}[fn] said, “Are you also still without understanding? 17 Do you not [[yet]][fn] see[fn] that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and is expelled into the latrine? 18 But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adultery, fornications, thefts, false witnesses, blasphemies.[fn] 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a person.”
21 And going out from there, Jesus withdrew to the regions of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a Canaanite woman from those borders came out and cried out [[to him]],[fn] saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord,[fn] Son of David; my daughter is severely demon-possessed.”
23 But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and asked him, saying, “Send her away, for she cries out after us.”
24 But he answered and said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
25 But she came and worshiped[fn] him, saying, “Lord,[fn] help me.”
26 And he answered and said, “It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”
27 But she said, “Yes, Lord,[fn] for even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”
28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
29 And moving on from there, Jesus came by the Sea of Galilee, and going up on the mountain, he sat down there. 30 And many crowds came to him, having with them {the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute},[fn] and many others, and they laid them at {his feet},[fn] and he healed them; 31 so that the {crowd}[fn] was amazed, seeing [[the deaf hearing]][fn] the mute speaking, the crippled healthy, [the lame walking],[fn] and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.
32 And Jesus, calling his disciples to him, said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, lest they faint on the way.” 33 And {the}[fn] disciples said to him, “Where can we get enough bread in the wilderness to satisfy such a large crowd?”
34 And Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have? And they said, Seven, and a few small fish.” 35 And he commanded the {crowd}[fn] to sit down on the ground.
36 And he took the seven loaves and the fish, and after giving thanks, he broke them and gave them to {the}[fn] disciples, and the disciples to the crowds. 37 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up the leftover broken pieces, seven baskets full. 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, not counting women and children.
39 And after dismissing the crowds, he {got}[fn] into the boat and came to the region of Magadan.
16 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
2 But he answered them, “[When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and threatening.’ [[Hypocrites]],[fn] you know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times?][fn] 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of [[the prophet]][fn] Jonah.” And leaving them, he went away.
5 And when {the} disciples[fn] came to the other side, they forgot to take bread.
6 But Jesus said to them, “"Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, “We did not take any bread.”
8 But Jesus, knowing this, said [[to them]],[fn] “Why do you reason among yourselves, you of little faith, because you {have}[fn] no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, nor remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? 10 Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many baskets you took up? 11 How do you not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 Now when Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked {his}[fn] disciples, saying, “Who do men say {the Son of Man is}?”[fn] 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 {He}[fn] said to them, “But who do you say I am?”
16 And Simon Peter answered and said [[to him]],[fn] “You are the Christ,[fn] the Son of the living God.”
17 And Jesus answered and said [to him],[fn] “Blessed are you, Simon bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in the heavens. 18 And I also say to you, that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 [[And]][fn] I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” 20 Then he instructed {the}[fn] disciples not to tell anyone that he is [[Jesus]][fn] the Christ.
21 From that time Jesus [[Christ]][fn] began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. 22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord![fn] This shall never happen to you.”
23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan![fn] You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wishes to follow me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will repay each person according to his deeds.
28 “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
17 And after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and leads them up a high mountain by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him.
4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, {I will}[fn] make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 And when the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid. 7 And Jesus came and touched them, and said, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus alone.
9 And as they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, “Tell no one the vision until the Son of Man {has risen}[fn] from the dead.”
10 And {the}[fn] disciples asked him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 And {he}[fn] answered and said, “Elijah indeed comes [[first]][fn] and will restore all things; 12 but I say to you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished; so also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist.
14 And when they came to the crowd, a man approached him, kneeling down to him 15 and saying, “Lord,[fn] have mercy on my son, for he is moonstruck[fn] and suffers terribly; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”
17 Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was healed from that hour. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 {He}[fn] said to them, “Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.” 21 [[But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.]][fn]
22 As they were {gathering}[fn] in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be handed over into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they were greatly distressed.
24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the two-drachma tax approached Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the two-drachma tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth collect customs or taxes? From their sons or from others?” 26 And when {he said},[fn] “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 But so that we do not cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and you.”
18 At that time the disciples approached Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of the heavens?” 2 And calling a child, [[Jesus]][fn] placed it in their midst 3 and said, “Truly I tell you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of the heavens. 4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, this one is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens. 5 And whoever receives one such child in my name, receives me.
6 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung {around}[fn] their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
7 “Woe to the world because of the stumbling blocks! For [it is necessary that][fn] stumbling blocks come, but woe to the man through whom the stumbling block comes. 8 If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut {it}[fn] off and throw it away from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire. 9 And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of Gehenna.[fn]
10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. 11 [[For the Son of Man came to save the lost.]][fn]
12 “What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? 13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray. 14 So it is not the will {before}[fn] {your}[fn] Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
15 “If your brother sins [against you],[fn] go and reprove him between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother; 16 but if he does not listen, take with you one or two others, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established; 17 and if he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
18 “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
19 “Again [truly][fn] I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in the heavens. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.”
21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”
22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.
23 “Therefore the kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a king, who wished to settle accounts with his servants. 24 When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. 25 And since he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.
26 “So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me [[Lord]],[fn] and I will pay you everything.’
27 “And out of pity for him, the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.
28 “But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay [[me]][fn] what you owe.’
29 “So his fellow servant fell down [[at his feet]][fn] and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you [[all]].’[fn]
30 “He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt [[that was owed]].[fn] 31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt [[to him]].[fn] 35 So also my heavenly Father will do to you, if you do not forgive your brother [[their trespasses]][fn] from your heart.”
19 And it happened when Jesus finished these words, he moved from Galilee and came to the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 And many crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
3 And Pharisees approached him, testing him and saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?”
4 But he answered and said, “Have you not read that the one who {created}[fn] them from the beginning made them male and female?[fn] 5 And he said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’[fn] 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let no man separate.”
7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send [her][fn] away?”[fn]
8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you [that],[fn] whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery. [And the one who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.]”[fn]
10 The[fn] disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.”
11 But he said to them, “Not everyone can accept this teaching, but only those to whom it is given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of the heavens. Let the one who is able to accept this accept it.”
13 Then children were brought to him so that he might lay his hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of the heavens.” 15 And he laid his hands on them and went on from there.
16 And behold, one came up to him and said,[fn] “Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” 17 He said to him, “{Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good}.[fn] If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
18 He said to him, “Which ones?” Jesus said, “You shall not murder, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”[fn]
20 The young man said to him, “All these I have kept [[from my youth]];[fn] what do I still lack?”
21 Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to [the][fn] poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
22 But when the young man heard [this word,][fn] he went away sorrowful, for he had many possessions.
23 But Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly I say to you that a rich person will enter the kingdom of the heavens with difficulty.
24 “Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26 But Jesus, looking at them, said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
27 Then Peter answered and said to him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed you; what then will be for us?”
28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, you who have followed me, in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
29 “And whoever has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother [[or wife]][fn] or children or fields for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life.
30 “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”
20 “For the kingdom of heaven is like a man, a householder, who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2 And having agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace 4 and said to them, ‘Go also into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.’ 5 So they went. {Again},[fn] going out about the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour, going out, he found others standing [[idle]][fn] and said to them, ‘Why have you been standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘Go also into the vineyard [[and whatever is right you will receive]].’[fn]
8 “And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.’ 9 And those who came about the eleventh hour each received a denarius. 10 And when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but they also received a denarius each. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the householder, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But he answered one of them and said, ‘Friend, I am not doing you wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what is yours and go. I want to give to this last man the same as I give to you. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Or is your eye evil because I am good?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last. [[For many are called, but few are chosen]]”[fn]
17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve [disciples][fn] {aside privately and said to them on the way},[fn] 18 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and on the third day he {will be raised}.”[fn]
20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling and asking something from him.
21 He said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Declare that these two sons of mine will sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.”
22 But Jesus answered, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink [[and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with]]?”[fn] They said to him, “We are able.”
23 He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left {is}[fn] not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
24 And when the ten heard this, they were indignant about the two brothers.
25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It will not be so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you will be your servant, 27 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave; 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
29 And as they were going out from Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, [Lord,][fn] Son of David.”
31 But the crowd rebuked them so that they would be silent; yet they cried out even more, saying, “Have mercy on us, Lord,[fn] Son of David.”
32 And Jesus, stopping, called them and said, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 They said to him, “Lord,[fn] that our eyes may be opened.” 34 And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately {they regained their sight and followed him}.[fn]
21 And when they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. 3 And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and immediately he will send them.”
4 Now [[all]][fn] this took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion: Behold, your king comes to you, gentle and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.”[fn]
6 And the disciples went and did as Jesus had {instructed}[fn] them, 7 and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their garments on them, and he sat {on}[fn] them. 8 But the majority of the crowd spread their own garments on the road, others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them on the road.
9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”[fn]
10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?”
11 And the crowds said, “This is {the prophet Jesus},[fn] from Nazareth of Galilee.”
12 And Jesus entered the temple [[of God]][fn] and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those selling doves. 13 And he said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’[fn] but {you make it}[fn] a den of robbers.”[fn] 14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise?’ ”[fn]
17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
18 In the {morning},[fn] {returning}[fn] to the city, he became hungry. 19 And seeing a fig tree by the road, he came to it and found nothing on it but leaves only, and he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again into the age.”[fn] And the fig tree withered immediately. 20 And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?”
21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And whatever you ask for in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
23 And when he came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people approached him as he was teaching, saying, “By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?” 24 And Jesus answered them, “I will also ask you one question, which if you tell me, I likewise will tell you by what authority I do these things: 25 The baptism of John, where was it from? From heaven or from men?” And they {reasoned among themselves},[fn] saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the crowd, for they all hold John as a prophet.”
27 And they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
28 “What do you think? A man had two children. And coming to the first, he said, Child, go today and work in {the}[fn] vineyard. 29 But he answered and said, ‘I do not want to,’ but later, having regretted it, he went. 30 {And coming to the other},[fn] he said likewise. But he answered and said, ‘I will, sir,’ and did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of the father?” They say [[to him]],[fn] “the first.” Jesus says to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going ahead of you into the kingdom of God. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and you, seeing this, did not even regret it later to believe him.
33 “Listen to another parable. There was a [[certain]][fn] man, a householder, who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to vine-growers and went on a journey. 34 When the time of the fruits drew near, he sent his servants to the vine-growers to receive his fruits. 35 The vine-growers took his servants, one they beat, one they killed, one they stoned. 36 Again, he sent other servants, more than the first, and they did the same to them. 37 Later, he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
38 But when the vine-growers saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and {obtain}[fn] his inheritance.’ 39 Taking him, they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. 40 Therefore, when the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-growers?” 41 They said to him, “He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and he will lease his vineyard to other vine-growers, who will give him the fruits in their seasons.”
42 Jesus says to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this has become cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?[fn]
43 “Therefore I say to you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will crush [them].”
45 And when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them; 46 and seeking to seize him, they feared the crowds, since they held him to be a prophet.
22 And Jesus answered and spoke to them again in parables, saying, 2 “The kingdom of the heavens is like a man, a king, who made a wedding for his son. 3 And he sent his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding, and they did not want to come. 4 Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding.” ’ 5 But they disregarded it and went away, one to his own field, another to his business; 6 and the rest seized his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. 7 But the king was enraged,[fn] and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore to the crossroads of the streets, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.’ 10 And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found,[fn] both bad and good; and the wedding was filled with guests.
11 But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, [[take him away]][fn] and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”
15 Then the Pharisees went and took counsel on how to trap him in his words. 16 And they sent to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and teach the way of God in truth, and you do not care about anyone; for you do not look at the face of men. 17 So tell us what you think: is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, “Why do you test me, hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20 And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” 21 They said to him, “Caesar's.” Then he said to them, “Therefore, give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” 22 And when they heard this, they marveled, and leaving him, they went away.
23 On that day Sadducees came to him, saying[fn] there is no resurrection, and they questioned him 24 saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If someone dies without having children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up offspring for his brother.’[fn] 25 Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first married and died, and not having offspring, he left his wife to his brother; 26 likewise the second and the third, up to the seven. 27 But last of all, the woman died. 28 In the resurrection, therefore, whose of the seven will she be wife? For they all had her.”
29 But Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God; 30 for in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels [[of God]][fn] in heaven. 31 But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 32 ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’?[fn] He[fn] is not the God of the dead but of the living.”
33 And when the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.
34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 And one of them [a lawyer] asked him, [[saying]][fn]testing him, 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 And {he}[fn] said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind,’[fn] 38 this is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[fn] 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
41 Now when the Pharisees had gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.”
43 {He}[fn] said to them, “How then does David, in the Spirit, call him ‘Lord,’ saying, 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, {until I put your enemies under your feet}?” ’[fn] 45 If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?” 46 And no one was able to answer him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day on to ask him any more questions.
23 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat. 3 Therefore, {do and observe whatever they tell you},[fn] but do not follow their deeds; for they say and do not do. 4 {But}[fn] they tie up heavy [and hard to bear][fn] burdens and lay them on people's shoulders, but they [themselves][fn] are not willing to lift a finger to move them. 5 But they do all their deeds to be seen by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and enlarge {their tassels},[fn] 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues, 7 and the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called by men, ‘Rabbi. [[Rabbi]]’[fn] 8 But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one {teacher},[fn] [[the Christ]][fn] and you are all brothers.
9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one {Father, the heavenly one}.[fn] 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces; for you do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in..
14 [[“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you devour the houses of the widows, and for a show make long prayers; for this reason you will receive greater condemnation.]][fn]
15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel over sea and land to make one proselyte, and when it happens, you make it a son of Gehenna[fn] twice as much as yourselves.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’ 17 Fools and blind men! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated.’ 19 Blind {men}![fn] For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it; 21 and he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by the one who dwells in it; 22 and he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by the one who sits upon it.
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith; these things you should have done, without neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides, who strain out the gnat, but swallow the camel.
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside they are full of greed and {self-indulgence}.[fn] 26 Blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup [[and dish]],[fn] so that the outside of {it}[fn] may also become clean.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 and say, ‘If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Therefore you testify against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You snakes, offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?[fn] 34 For this reason, behold, I am sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city; 35 so that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those sent to her, how often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a bird gathers its young under its wings, and you were not willing. 38 Behold, your house is left to you [desolate].[fn] 39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now on until you say, ‘Blessed is the one coming in the name of the Lord.’ ”[fn]
24 And Jesus went out from the temple and was going on his way, and his disciples came to show him the buildings of the temple.
2 But he answering [[Jesus]] [fn] said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I tell you, not a stone will be left here upon a stone that will not be torn down.”
3 And as he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?”
4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for it must happen, but the end is not yet.
7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines [[and pestilences]][fn] and earthquakes in various places; 8 but all these things are the beginning of birth pains.
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of my name. 10 And then many will fall away and will betray one another and will hate one another; 11 and many false prophets will arise and will lead many astray; 12 and because lawlessness will increase, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end, this one will be saved.
14 “And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole inhabited earth as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.
15 “So when you see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet,[fn] standing in the holy place, let the reader understand, 16 then let those who are in Judea flee {to}[fn] the mountains, 17 the one on the roof should not go down to take anything out of his house, 18 and the one in the field should not turn back to take his {cloak}.[fn] 19 Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing infants in those days! 20 Pray that your flight may not be in winter or {on}[fn] a Sabbath. 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, nor never will be. 22 And if those days had not been cut short, no flesh would be saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.
23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There,’ do not believe it; 24 for false christs and false prophets will rise and will give great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 Behold, I have told you beforehand. 26 So if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out; ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and is seen even to the west, so [[also]][fn] will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
29 “But immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.[fn]
30 “And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with great power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a great trumpet [[sound]],[fn] and they will gather his elect[fn] from the four winds, from the ends of the heavens to their ends.
32 “Now learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; 33 so also you, when you see all these things, know that it is near, at the doors. 34 Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
36 “But concerning that day or hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven [nor the Son],[fn] but only {the}[fn] Father.
37 “For just as the days of Noah were, so [[also]][fn] will be the presence of the Son of Man. 38 For [[even]][fn] as they were in those days before the flood, eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so will be [also] the coming of the Son of Man.
40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and {one will be left}.[fn] 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what {day}[fn] your Lord is coming.
43 “But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 For this reason, you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.
45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom {the}[fn] master has put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that servant whom the master finds doing so when he comes. 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.
48 “But if that wicked servant says in his heart, ‘My master is {delayed},’[fn] 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and eats and drinks with drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, 51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
25 “Then the kingdom of the heavens will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 For the foolish ones, having taken their lamps, did not take oil with them. 4 But the wise ones took oil in their vessels[fn] with their lamps. 5 And while the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept.
6 But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom [[is coming]]![fn] Go out to meet[fn] [him].’[fn] 7 Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’
9 But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there not be enough for us and you; go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding, and the door was shut. 11 Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us.’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Therefore, be alert, for you do not know the day nor the hour [[in which the Son of Man comes]].[fn]
14 “For just as a man going on a journey called his own servants and entrusted to them his possessions, 15 and to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, to each according to his own ability, and he went away. Immediately, 16 the one who had received the five talents went and worked with them {and gained another five};[fn] 17 likewise, the one with two gained another two. 18 But the one who had received the one talent went away, dug a hole in the ground, and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time, the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And the one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing another five talents [[besides them]],[fn] saying, ‘Master, you entrusted me with five talents; see, I have gained another five talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.’
22 “And the one {with}[fn] the two talents also came forward, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained another two talents [[besides them]].’[fn] 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a little, I will set you over much; enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 Then the one who had received the one talent also came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter; 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground; see, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter? 27 Then you should have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming, I would have received what was mine with interest. 28 Therefore, take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents; 29 for to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the [[holy]][fn] angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory;[fn] 32 and all the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33 and he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.
34 “Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you {sick}[fn] or in prison and come to you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’
44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
26 And it happened when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples, 2 “You know that after two days the Passover takes place, and the Son of Man is handed over to be crucified.”
3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of the high priest [[and the scribes]],[fn] who was called Caiaphas, 4 and they conspired to arrest Jesus by deceit and kill him; 5 but they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”
6 Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, and she poured it on his head as he reclined at the table. 8 When {the}[fn] disciples saw this, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? 9 For this [[perfume]][fn] could have been sold for a high price and given to the poor.” 10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good deed for me. 11 For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me. 12 For in pouring this perfume on my body, she has prepared me for burial.
13 Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what she has done will also be spoken of in memory of her.”
14 Then one of the twelve, the one called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me, and I will hand him over to you?” And they set for him thirty silver coins. 16 And from then on he sought an opportunity to betray him.
17 On the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying [[to him]],[fn] “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and say to him, ‘The teacher says, My time is near; I will keep the Passover at your house with my disciples.’ ” 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20 When evening came, he reclined at table with the {twelve}.[fn] 21 And as they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” 22 And they were very sorrowful and began to say to him {each one},[fn] “Is it I, Lord?”
23 He answered, “The one who has dipped his hand in the dish with me will betray me. 24 The Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” 25 Then Judas, who would betray him, answered, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He said to him, “You have said so.”
26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, And {having blessed},[fn] he broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 27 And taking a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, 28 for this is my blood of the [[new]][fn] covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 29 But I tell you, I will not drink from this {fruit}[fn] of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in the kingdom of my Father.”
30 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31 Then Jesus says to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of me this night, for it has been written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’[fn] 32 But after I am raised, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
33 Peter answered and said to him, “Even if all are made to stumble because of you, I will never be made to stumble.”
34 Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that on this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.”
35 Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you.” Likewise, all the disciples said.
36 Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to {the}[fn] disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”
37 And taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be grieved and distressed.
38 Then {he}[fn] said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death; remain here and keep watch with me.”
39 And going a little farther, he fell on his face, praying and saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not as I will, but as you will.”
40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “So, you could not keep watch with me for one hour?
41 “Keep watch and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

What is it that these testify against you?” 63 But Jesus was silent. 3 Then, when Judas, the one who handed him over, saw that he was condemned, he regretted it and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by handing over innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? 6 But the chief priests, taking the silver coins, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”

9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “And they took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one who was valued, whom they valued from the sons of Israel, 10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me.”[fn]

25 And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, but Jesus, after having him flogged, he handed over so that he might be crucified.
