ACROSTIC*

Poetic composition in which the first letters of successive lines or stanzas spell out the alphabet, a word, or a motto. The Hebrew prophets and poets often used an alphabetical acrostic as a poetic or mnemonic (memory) device (see Pss 9; 10; 25; 34; 37; 111; 112; 119; 145; Prv 31:10-31; Lam 1–4; Na 1).
