2The sons of Israel were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, 2Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 3The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, and Shelah, born to him by Bathshua the Canaanite woman. (Er, Judah's first­born, was a Wicked man before the Eternal, who cut him off.) 4His daughter-in-law Tamar also bore him Perez and Zerah; so Judah had five sons in all. 5The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul; 6the sons of Zerah were Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol, and Darda, five in all. 7(Karmi's son was Achar, the obstacle to Israel, who broke faith over the doomed plunder.) 8Ethan's son was Azariah.

9Hezron's sons, born to him, were Jerahmeel, Ram, and Chelubai (Caleb). 10Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab was the father of Nahshon the chief of the Judahites, 11Nahshon the father of Salma, Salma of Boaz, 12Boaz of Obed, and Obed of Jesse; 13Jesse was the father of Eliah, his eldest son, Abinadab his second, Shimea his third, 14Nethanel his fourth, Raddai his fifth, 15Ozem his sixth, and David his seventh, 16their sisters being Zerulah and Abigail; Zeruiah was the mother of Abishai, Joab, and Asahel, three sons; 17Abigail was the mother of Amasa, whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite.

18Caleb the son of Hezron married Azubah, daughter of Jerioth, and she bore him Jesher, Shobab, and Ardon. 19When Azubah died, Caleb married Ephrath, who bore him Hur; 20Hur was the father of Uri, and Uri the father of Bezalel. 21(Later on, Hezron had intercourse with the daughter of Machir the father of Gilead, whom he married when he was sixty; she bore him Segub, 22the father of Jair, who held twenty-three towns in Gilead, 23though Havvoth-Jair and Kenath with its sixty villages were seized by Geshur and Aram. All these were descendants of Machir the father of Gilead.) 24It was after the death of Hezron that Caleb had intercourse with Ephrath. his father's

wife, who bore him Ashhur the founder of Tekoa. 25Hezron's eldest son Jerahmeel was the father of Ram his eldest son, and of Bunah, Oren, and Ozem, his brothers. 26By another wife, called Atarah, Jerahmeel was the father of Onam. 27The sons of Ram, Jerahmeel's eldest son, were Maaz, Jamin, and Eker; 28the sons of Onam were Shammai and Jada. Shammai was the father of Nadab and Abishur. 29Abishur's wife was called Abihail, and she bore him Ahban and Molid; 30Nadab's sons were Seled and Appaim; Seled died childless, 31but Appaim was the father of Ishi, Ishi the father of Sheshan, and Sheslian the father of Ahlai. 32Shammai's brother Jada was the father of Jether and Jonathan; Jether died childless, 33but Jonathan was the father of Peleth and Zaza. These were the descendants of Jerahmeel. 34Sheshan had no sons only daughters; he had an Egyptian slave called Jarha, 35so to Jarha his slave Shelah gave one of his daughters in marriage. She was the mother of Attai, 36the father of Nathan, the father of Zabad, 37the father of Ephlal, the father of Obed, 38the father of Jehu, the father of Azariah, 39the father of Helez, the father of Eleasah, 40the father of Sismai, the father of Shallum, 41the father of Jekamiah, the father of Elishama.

42Caleb, Jerahmeel's brother, was the father of Mareshah his eldest son, and Mareshah was the founder of Ziph and of Hebron. 43From Hebron sprang Korah, Tappuah, Rekem, and Shema; 44from Shema Raham, the founder of Jokdeam, and from Rekem Shammai, 45from Shammai Maon, and from Maon Bethzur. 46Ephah, Caleb's concubine, bore Haran, Moza, and Gazez; and Haran was the father of Gazez. 47Maakah, Caleb's concubine, bore Sheber and Tirhanah. 48The sons of his concubine Jahdai were Regem, Jotham, Geshan, Pelet, Ephah, and Shaaph; 49Shaaph was the founder of Madmannah, Sheva of Machbena and of Gibea, while Achsah was the daughter of Caleb. 50These were the descendants of Caleb.

51The sons of Hur, the eldest son of Ephrathah, were Shobal the founder of Kiriath-jearim, 52Salma the founder of Betblehem, and Hareph the founder of Bethgader. 53From Shobal, the founder of Kiriath-jearim, sprang Reaiah and half of the Manahathites; from the families of Kiriath-jearim, the Ithrites, the Puthites, the Shumathites, and the Mishraites, sprang the Zorathites and the Eshtaolites. 54Salma was the founder of Bethlehem, the Netophatbites, Ataroth-beth-joab, half of the Manahathites, and the Zorites. 55The Tirathites, the Shimeathites, and the Sueathites were families of scribes who lived at Jabez; they were Kenites, descended from Hammath the founder of the Rechabites.
