Readers’ Version

Literal Version

8(And Saul was agreeing that Stephen should be executed.)

8And Saulos was consenting to_the killing of_him.
And a_ great _persecution became on that the day, against the assembly, which was in Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim).
And all were_dispersed throughout the regions of_ the _Youdaia and Samareia/(Shomərōn), except the ambassadors.

8:2 Persecution of believers intensifies

That same day, intense persecution began against the assembly in Yerusalem, and so the believers fled throughout the regions of Yudea and Samaria, except for the twelve who stayed. 2(Some godly men buried Stephen with loud wailing.)

3[ref]As for Saul, he started on destroying the assembly by entering people’s homes and dragging both men and women out and then off to prison.

2And devout men buried the Stefanos, and they_made great lamentation over him.
3But Saulos was_ravaging the assembly, by entering_in the houses, dragging both men and women, he_was_giving_over them to prison.

8:4 Philip preaches in Samaria

4However, now the people who had fled began to proclaim the good message to others in other places. 5Around the same time, Philip went to a city in Samaria and told them about the messiah. 6Crowds gathered and listened carefully to Philip and watched him do miracles—7many demon-possessed people shouted loudly as the demons left them, and many who were paralysed or lame were healed 8so there were a lot of happy people there.

4The ones therefore on_one_hand having_been_dispersed, passed_through good_message_preaching the message.
5On_the_other_hand Filippos having_come_down to the a_city the of_Samareia, was_proclaiming the chosen_one/messiah to_them.
6and the crowds /Were/_taking_heed to_the things being_spoken by the Filippos with_one_accord, in the time to_be_hearing them and to_be_seeing the signs that he_was_doing.
7For/Because many of_the ones having unclean spirits, shouting with_a_ loud _voice, they_were_coming_out, and many having_been_paralyzed and lame were_healed.
8and great joy became in the that city.

8:9 Simon the magician seeks power

9One man in the city had been practicing magic and amazing the people, and he claimed that he was someone great. His name was Simon 10and the people there from the least to the most important said, “This power is from the great god.” 11They gave him a lot of attention because he’d been amazing them with magic for quite a long time. 12However when Philip started preaching the good message about God’s kingdom and the name and authority of Yeshua the messiah, they believed the message, and many men and women asked to be immersed in water. 13Simon himself also believed and was immersed, and then started accompanying Philip around—marvelling as he observed the miracles and signs of God’s power.

14When the missionaries in Yerusalem heard that many people from Samaria had accepted God’s message, they sent Peter and Yohan out to them 15so then they prayed for them to receive the holy spirit. 16(The holy spirit hadn’t fallen on any of them at that point, but they had only been immersed into the name and authority of the master Yeshua.) 17So Peter and Yohan placed their hands on the new believers and they received the holy spirit.

18When Simon the magician saw that they received the spirit after having the hands of the missionaries placed on them, he offered money to Peter and Yohan, saying, 19“Give me this authority so that anyone who I place my hands on will receive the holy spirit.”

20But Peter responded, “May your money join you in your destruction because you thought you could buy God’s gift with it. 21There’s no role for you here and no part for you in our work because your heart isn’t right with God. 22You need to turn away from this evil desire and beg the master that maybe he’ll forgive you for your wrong intentions 23because I perceive that you have a bitter attitude and ungodly habits.

24Simon answered, “Oh, please ask the master on my behalf that none of what you mentioned will happen to me.”

9And a_man certain by_the_name Simōn, was_previously_starting in the city practicing_magic, and amazing the people of_ the _Samareia, saying himself to_be someone great.
10To_whom all from small to great were_giving_heed saying:
This is the Power of_ the _god, which being_called great.
11And they_were_giving_heed to_him, because_of that to_have_amazed them with_the magic for_much time.
12But when they_believed the in_Filippos, good_message_preaching concerning the kingdom the of_god and the name of_Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) chosen_one/messiah, they_were_being_immersed both men and women.
13And the Simōn himself also believed, and having_been_immersed, was continuing the with_Filippos, observing both signs and great miracles becoming, he_was_marvelling.
14And the ambassadors in Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim) having_heard that the Samareia/(Shomərōn) has_received the message of_ the _god, they_sent_out Petros and Yōannaʸs to them, 15who having_come_down, they_prayed for them, so_that they_may_receive the_ holy _spirit.
16For/Because it_was not_yet having_fallen_on on no_one of_them, but they_were_ only _being having_been_immersed into the name of_the master Yaʸsous.
17Then they_were_laying_on their hands on them, and they_were_receiving the_ holy _spirit.
18And the Simōn having_seen that the spirit is_being_given by the laying_on of_the hands of_the ambassadors, he_offered money to_them 19saying:
Give to_also_me the this authority, in_order_that on_whom if I_may_lay_on my hands, he_may_be_receiving the_ holy _spirit.
20But Petros said to him:
The silver of_you, it_might_be to destruction with you, because you_thought to_be_acquiring the gift of_ the _god by money.
21There_is no portion nor allotment to_you in the this matter.
For/Because the heart of_you not is right before the god.
22Therefore repent of the this evil of_you, and be_besought of_the master if perhaps the intention of_the heart of_you will_be_being_forgiven to_you.
23For/Because I_am_seeing you being in the_gall of_bitterness and the_bond of_unrighteousness.
24But the Simōn answering said:
You_all Be_besought for me to the master, so_that nothing of_which you_all_have_spoken may_come_over on me.

8:25 Philip immerses the Ethiopian official

25After that, Peter and Yohan continued to testify and proclaim the good message about the master in many villages around Samaria before they returned to Yerusalem.

26Then a messenger from the master spoke to Philip, “Start walking and head south on the road that goes downhill from Yerusalem to Gaza through the wilderness.” 27So he headed off, and on the road he came across an important official of the Ethiopian queen[fn] who was in charge of her treasury. This man had been in Yerusalem to worship God 28and was returning home in his chariot. As he rode, he was reading the scroll of the prophet Isayah, 29and the spirit told Philip to approach him and stay by the chariot. 30So Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading from the prophet Isayah and asked, “Do you know what it is that you’re reading about?”

31“How could I know when I don’t have someone to guide me,” he answered, and so he invited Philip to climb up and sit with him. 32Now the particular passage that he was reading was this:[ref]

‘He was led away like a sheep being led to the slaughterhouse,

and stayed as silent as a lamb being shorn

so he never opened his mouth.

33He was humiliated by a lack of justice.

Who can name his descendants,

because his life is being taken from the earth?’

34“Now tell me,” said the official, “who was Isayah talking about? Was he talking about himself or someone else?” 35So Philip started with that passage and explained the good message about Yeshua to him. 36As they were going along the road, they came to some water, and the official asked, “Look, here’s some water. What would stop me from being immersed here?”

37 38So he commanded the driver to stop the chariot and they both climbed down, and Philip immersed the official in the water. 39But as they came out of the water, the master’s spirit snatched Philip away and so the official never saw him again, but he continued on his journey very happy. 40As for Philip, he found himself at the town of Azotus, and as he passed through the coastal towns on the way to Caesarea, he proclaimed the good message in each town.

8:27 Some translations list the queen’s name as ‘Candace’, but that was the name of the series of queens, cf., Far’oh (Pharaoh) or Caesar which came to be used as a title for more than one person.

8:3: Acts 22:4-5; 26:9-11.

8:32-33: Isa 53:7-8 (LXX).

25Therefore they indeed, having_testified and having_spoken the message of_the master, were_returning to Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), and they_were_evangelizing many villages of_the Samareitaʸs/(Shomərōn).
26But an_messenger of_the_master spoke to Filippos saying:
Rise_up and be_going to the_south, to the road which coming_down from Hierousalaʸm to Gaza/(ˊAzzāh), this is the_wilderness road.
27And having_risen_up, he_was_gone, and see, a_man, an_Aithiops/(Kūshiy) eunuch, official of_Kandakaʸ queen of_the_Aithiopss, who was over all the treasure of_her, who had_come going_to_prostrate in Hierousalaʸm, 28and he_was returning and sitting in the chariot of_him, and was_reading the prophet Aʸsaias/(Yəshaˊəyāh).
29And the spirit said to_ the _Filippos:
Approach and be_joined_together to_ the this _chariot.
30And the Filippos having_run_up, heard of_him reading Aʸsaias the prophet, and said:
Then surely you_are_knowing what you_are_reading?
31And he said:
For/Because how wishfully I_might_be_able if not someone will_be_guiding me?
And he_appealed the to_Filippos having_gone_up to_sit_down with him.
32And the passage of_ the _scripture which he_was_reading was this:
he_was_led As a_sheep to the_slaughter, and silent as a_lamb before the one having_shaved him, thus he_is_ not _opening_up the mouth of_him.
33In the humiliation, the justice of_him was_taken_away, who will_be_describing the generation of_him?
Because the life of_him is_being_taken_away from the earth.
34And the eunuch answering to_ the _Filippos said:
I_am_beseeching of_you concerning whom the prophet is_saying this?
Concerning himself or concerning someone other?
35And the Filippos having_opened_up the mouth of_him, and having_begun from the this scripture, he_good_message_preached the Yaʸsous/(Yəhōshūˊa) to_him.
36And as they_were_going along the road, they_came to some water, and the eunuch is_saying:
Behold, water, what is_forbidding me to_be_immersed?
37 38And he_commanded the chariot to_stop, and they_ both _came_down, to the water, the both Filippos and the eunuch, and he_immersed him.
39But when they_went_up out_of the water, the_spirit of_the_master snatched the Filippos, and the eunuch not saw him no_longer, because/for he_was_going the way of_him rejoicing.
40But Filippos was_found at Azōtos/(ʼAshədōd), and passing_through he_was_good_message_preaching to_ all _the cities, until the time him to_come to Kaisareia.
