AICNT MARK Chapter 2

MARK 2 ©

And entering again into Capernaum after some days, it was heard that he was in a house. 2And [[immediately]][fn] many gathered, so that there was no longer room, not even at the door, and he spoke the word to them.

And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4And not being able to {bring him to him}[fn] because of the crowd, they removed the roof[fn] where he was, and having dug through, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay.

And seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralytic, “Child, your sins {are forgiven}.”[fn]

Now some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7“Why does this man speak {like this? He blasphemes!}[fn] Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus pondered within themselves, says to them, “Why do you ponder these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins {are}[fn] forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, take up your mat and walk’?

“But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority {to forgive sins on earth}”[fn] - he says to the paralytic, 11“I say to you, rise, pick up your mat and go to your house.”

And he rose and immediately took up the mat and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

And he went out again by the sea; and all the crowd came to him, and he taught them.

And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And rising up, he followed him.

{And it happened that he reclined in his house},[fn] and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many and they followed him.

And the scribes {of}[fn] the Pharisees, seeing that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “{Why does he eat}[fn] with tax collectors and sinners?”

And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners [[to repentance]].”[fn]

And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting. And they came and said to him, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?”

And Jesus said to them, “Can the sons of the bridechamber[fn] fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in {that day}.[fn]

“No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; if he does, the new patch tears away from the old, and a worse tear is made.

“And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, {the wine will burst the wineskins, and the wine is lost as well as the wineskins}.[fn] [But new wine is for new wineskins.]”[fn]

And it happened that on the Sabbath he was passing through the grainfields, and his disciples began to make their way plucking the heads of grain. 24And the Pharisees said to him, “Look, what they are doing on the Sabbath which is not lawful?”

And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and was hungry, he and those with him, 26how he entered the house of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave it to those who were with him?”

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for men, and not men for the Sabbath; 28so the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
