Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

8:23-27 The episode at sea extends the theme of what true discipleship involves. The storm challenged the disciples to entrust their very lives to Jesus for protection and deliverance. Jesus even has authority over dangerous weather and the sea (see Job 38:8-11; Pss 29; 65:1-13; 89:9; 107:23-32).
Note 1 topic: writing-pronouns
ἤγειραν αὐτὸν
˱they˲_raised him
The pronoun they refers to the disciples, and the pronoun him refers to Jesus. If this is not clear for your readers, you could refer to these people more directly. Alternate translation: “the disciples woke Jesus”
Note 2 topic: writing-quotations
λέγοντες
saying
Consider natural ways of introducing direct quotations in your language. Alternate translation without the preceding comma: “and they said”
Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / exclusive
ἀπολλύμεθα!
˱we˲_/are/_perishing
Here, the word we includes both Jesus and the disciples. Your language may require you to mark this form.
