Note: This view shows ‘verses’ which are not natural language units and hence sometimes only part of a sentence will be visible. Normally the OET discourages the reading of individual ‘verses’, but this view is only designed for doing comparisons of different translations. Click on any Bible version abbreviation down the left-hand side to see the verse in more of its context. The OET segments on this page are still very early looks into the unfinished texts of the Open English Translation of the Bible. Please double-check these texts in advance before using in public.

OET (OET-RV)Another one of his followers said to him, “I’ll follow you, Master, but first let me wait until I can bury[fn] my father.”

8:21 It’s not certain from either the text or the context whether this person meant that their father had just died (less likely, perhaps, because they probably wouldn’t have been there at all), or that they wanted to delay until their (presumably, elderly) father passed away before following Yeshua.

OET-LVAnd another of_the apprentices/followers said to_him:

TSNTyndale Study Notes:

8:21 Another of his disciples: This statement suggests that the teacher of 8:19 was a disciple as well. Lord suggests a stronger commitment to Jesus.
• bury my father: This was one of the highest religious duties in Judaism, but Jesus requires total commitment to him.

UTNuW Translation Notes:

Note 1 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

δὲ

and

Here, the word Now introduces the next thing that happened. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces the next event, or you could leave Now untranslated. Alternate translation: [Then,]

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

ἐπίτρεψόν μοι πρῶτον ἀπελθεῖν καὶ θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου

permit ˱to˲_me first /to/_go_away and /to/_bury the father ˱of˲_me

Here the disciple could be indicating that: (1) his father had not yet died, but he needed to help and support his father until he died and was buried. Alternate translation: [permit me first to go away and help my father until he dies and I bury him] (2) his father had died very recently, and he needed to mourn and arrange the burial ceremonies. Alternate translation: [permit me first to go away and to bury my father who just died]

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / explicit

πρῶτον ἀπελθεῖν καὶ θάψαι τὸν πατέρα μου

first /to/_go_away and /to/_bury the father ˱of˲_me

Here the disciple means that he plans to bury his father before he travels with Jesus. If it would be helpful in your language, you could make this idea more explicit. Alternate translation: [to go away and to bury my father first before I go with you]
