THE FIRST LETTER OF PAUL TO THE

THESSALONIANS

Greeting

1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace [fn]from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Thessalonians' Good Example

2We always give thanks to God for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3remembering without ceasing, in the presence of our God and Father, your work of faith, your labor of love, and your endurance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers beloved by God, that you have been chosen, 5because our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with much conviction. You know what sort of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord when you received the word in much affliction with the joy of the Holy Spirit. 7As a result you have become [fn]examples to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. 8For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but reports of your faith in God have gone out everywhere, so that we have no need to say anything about it. 9For the people themselves report what kind of reception we [fn]had among you, and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and true God, 10as you wait for his Son Jesus to return from heaven, whom God raised from the dead, and who rescues us from the coming wrath.

Paul's Ministry in Thessalonica

2For you yourselves know, brothers, that our visit to you was not in vain. 2On the contrary, even though we had previously suffered and been mistreated in Philippi, as you know, we had boldness in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of strong opposition. 3For our exhortation does not come from error or impurity or with deceit, 4but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God, who examines our hearts. 5God is our witness that we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed, as you well know. 6Nor did we seek glory from men (neither from you nor from others), though as Christ's apostles we could have asserted our authority. 7Instead, we were [fn]gentle among you, like a nursing mother caring for her children. 8We had such strong affection for you that we were pleased to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become dear to us.

9For you remember, brothers, our labor and hardship. Working night and day so as not to be a burden on any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God. 10You are witnesses, and so is God, of how devoutly, righteously, and blamelessly we conducted ourselves among you who believe. 11As you know, we dealt with each one of you like a father deals with his own children, exhorting you, encouraging you, 12and testifying that you should walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into his own kingdom and glory.

13We also give thanks to God without ceasing because, when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe. 14For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea, because you suffered the same things from your own countrymen that they did from the Jews, 15who killed the Lord Jesus and [fn]their own prophets, and who also drove [fn]us out. They displease God and are hostile to all men 16by hindering us from telling the Gentiles how they can be saved. In this way they are always filling up the measure of their sins, but wrath has come upon them at last.

Paul's Longing to See the Thessalonians

17As for us, brothers, when we were bereaved of you for a brief hour (being physically absent, but with you in our hearts), we longed with great eagerness to see you face to face. 18[fn]Therefore we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, tried to do so again and again—but Satan hindered us. 19For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting in the presence of our Lord [fn]Jesus at his coming? Is it not you? 20Yes, you are our glory and joy!

3Therefore, when we could bear it no longer, we thought it best to stay in Athens alone, 2and we sent Timothy, our brother, who is [fn]a servant of God and our fellow worker in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you in your faith, 3so that no one would be shaken by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we have been appointed to afflictions such as these. 4In fact, when we were with you, we told you in advance that we were going to suffer affliction, and as you well know, it has now happened. 5For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent Timothy to find out about your faith, lest somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor had been in vain.

Timothy's Encouraging Report

6But Timothy has now come back to us from you and has brought us good news of your faith and love. He reports that you always think of us with affection, longing to see us, just as we also long to see you. 7Therefore, brothers, in all our [fn]affliction and distress, we were encouraged about you because of your faith. 8For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. 9How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you? 10Night and day we pray earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith.

11Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus [fn]Christ direct our way to you. 12May the Lord cause you to increase and abound in your love for one another and for all, just as we abound in our love for you. 13And may he strengthen your hearts to be blameless in holiness in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus [fn]Christ comes with all his [fn]saints.

Living to Please God

4Finally, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus that, just as you learned from us how you ought to walk and to please [fn]God, you do so more and more. 2For you know the commands we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3It is God's will that you be sanctified, that you abstain from fornication, 4and that each of you know how to control your own body in holiness and honor, 5not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God. 6In this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of his brother, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you before and solemnly warned you. 7For God did not call us to be impure, but to live in holiness. 8Therefore whoever rejects this command does not reject man but God, who [fn]has given his Holy Spirit to [fn]you.

9Now concerning brotherly love, you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another. 10And indeed you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more. 11We urge you to aspire to lead a quiet life, to attend to your own affairs, and to work with your [fn]own hands, just as we commanded you, 12so that you may walk properly toward outsiders and not be in need of anything.

The Coming of the Lord

13But [fn]we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who [fn]have fallen asleep, so that you may not be grieved like others who do not have hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive, who are left behind until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left behind, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Day of the Lord

5Now concerning the times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for anything to be written to you. 2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3When people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will certainly not escape. 4But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should catch you like [fn]a thief. 5[fn]You are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of the darkness. 6So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us be watchful and sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night; and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since [fn]we are of the day, let us be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God has not appointed us to suffer wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, even as you are doing.

Final Instructions and Benediction

12Now we ask you, brothers, to recognize those who labor among you, who lead you in the Lord and admonish you, 13and to regard them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace with one another. 14And we urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, and be patient toward all. 15Make sure no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always strive to do good to each other and to everyone else. 16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18and in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise [fn]prophecies, 21but test everything; hold fast to what is good. 22Avoid every form of evil.

23Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.

25Brothers, pray for [fn]us.

26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27I charge you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the [fn]holy brothers.

28The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. [fn]Amen.[fn]
