Yeshua’s warnings about show and status

Mat 23:1–12

Mark 12:38–39

Luke 11:43–46

Luke 20:45–46

23:1 Yeshua’s warnings about show and status

(Mark 12:38-39, Luke 11:43)

23Then Yeshua spoke to the crowds and to his followers, 2The religious teachers and the Pharisees party claim the authority of Moses. 3Because of that, do everything they tell you to do and obey all the commandments they tell you to obey. However, don’t follow what they do, because they’re only good at telling and not at doing. 4They package up heavy and unbearable loads and place them across the shoulders of the people, while they themselves won’t even more their little fingers. 5[ref]Everything that they do do, is only done to be a public display in front of the people, so they have big prayer boxes and fancy robes. 6They love the best place at dinners and the best seats in the meeting halls 7and being greeted in the marketplaces and to be addressed as ‘My great one’. 8But don’t let anyone call you ‘My great one’, because you only have one leader and you are all brothers and sisters, 9and don’t let anyone call you ‘Father’ on earth, because you all only have one heavenly father. 10Don’t let anyone call you their mentor, because you all have only one teacher and that’s the messiah. 11[ref]The most important person will be everyone’s servant 12[ref]and anyone who praises themself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles themself will be praised.

12:38 Yeshua warns about smartly-dressed teachers

(Mat. 23:1-36, Luke 20:45-47)

38As Yeshua continued teaching, he said, “Watch out for these religious teachers who like to wear fancy robes and be greeted in the square, 39and have the best seats at meetings and the best places at dinners.

43You Pharisees won’t end well, because you all love the best seats in the meeting halls and the honoured greetings in the marketplaces.

46Well, you law experts won’t end well,” Yeshua responded, “because you put unbearably heavy burdens onto the shoulders of the people, yet you wouldn’t move your little fingers to touch those burdens yourselves.

20:45 Yeshua warns about the religious teachers

(Mark 12:38-40, Mat. 23:1-36)

45While all the people were still listening, Yeshua told his followers, 46Watch out for the religious teachers who enjoy walking around in their robes and love the greetings they get in the marketplaces and the best seats in the meeting halls and the best places at the dinners
