TSNTyndale Study Notes:

23:5 prayer boxes: Pious Jews wore, on the head and upper left arm, a small pouch or box (phylactery) containing written copies of important Old Testament commands (see Deut 6:6-9; 11:18-19).
• Wearing tassels was another custom associated with piety (see Matt 9:20; see also Num 15:38-41). Lengthening the tassels called attention to their wearer’s pious practices.

δὲ

but

Here, the word But introduces the next thing that Jesus wants to say. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a word or phrase that introduces the next topic, or you could leave But untranslated. Alternate translation: “Further,”

Note 2 topic: figures-of-speech / activepassive

πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι τοῖς ἀνθρώποις

in_order that /to_be/_seen ˱by˲_the people

Note 3 topic: figures-of-speech / metonymy

πρὸς τὸ θεαθῆναι

in_order that /to_be/_seen

Here, the phrase to be seen refers to being recognized or praised. If it would be helpful in your language, you could state the meaning plainly. Alternate translation: “to be praised” or “to be honored”

Note 4 topic: figures-of-speech / gendernotations

τοῖς ἀνθρώποις

˱by˲_the people

Although the term men is masculine, Jesus is using the word in a generic sense that includes both men and women. If it would be helpful in your language, you could use a phrase that makes this clear. Alternate translation: “by humans” or “by men and women”

Note 5 topic: grammar-connect-words-phrases

γὰρ
