23:1 Yeshua’s warnings about show and status

(Mark 12:38-39, Luke 11:43)

23Then Yeshua spoke to the crowds and to his followers, 2The religious teachers and the Pharisees party claim the authority of Mosheh. 3Because of that, do everything they tell you to do and obey all the commandments they tell you to obey. However, don’t follow what they do, because they’re only good at telling and not at doing. 4They package up heavy and unbearable loads and place them across the shoulders of the people, while they themselves won’t even more their little fingers. 5[ref]Everything that they do do, is only done to be a public display in front of the people, so they have big prayer boxes and fancy robes. 6They love the best place at dinners and the best seats in the meeting halls 7and being greeted in the marketplaces and to be addressed as ‘My great one’. 8But don’t let anyone call you ‘My great one’, because you only have one leader and you are all brothers and sisters, 9and don’t let anyone call you ‘Father’ on earth, because you all only have one heavenly father. 10Don’t let anyone call you their mentor, because you all have only one teacher and that’s the messiah. 11[ref]The most important person will be everyone’s servant 12[ref]and anyone who praises themself will be humbled, and anyone who humbles themself will be praised.

23Then the Yaʸsous spoke to_the crowds and to_the apprentices/followers of_him 2saying:
The scribes and the Farisaios_party sat_down on the seat of_Mōsaʸs/(Mosheh).
3Therefore all things as_much_as wishfully they_may_tell to_you_all, do and be_keeping, but be_ not _doing according_to the works of_them, because/for they_are_speaking and they_are_ not _doing.
4And they_are_binding heavy and unbearable burdens, and they_are_laying_ them _on on the shoulders of_ the _people, but they are_ not _willing to_move them with_the finger of_them.
5But all the works of_them, they_are_doing in_order that to_be_seen by_the people.
For/Because they_are_widening the phylacteries of_them and they_are_magnifying their tassels.
6And they_are_loving the best_place at the suppers, and the best_seats in the synagogues, 7and the greetings in the marketplaces, and to_be_being_called My_great_one by the people.
8But you_all may_ not _be_called My_great_one, because/for one is the instructor of_you_all, and you_all are all brothers.
9And you_all_may_ not _call of_you on the earth father, because/for one is the the heavenly father of_you_all.
10Nor may_you_all_be_called instructors, because one is the_instructor of_you_all, the chosen_one/messiah.
11And the greater of_you_all will_be servant of_you_all.
12And whoever will_be_exalting himself, will_be_being_humbled, and whoever will_be_humbling himself, will_be_being_exalted.

23:13 Yeshua reveals the hypocrisy of those who’re religious

(Mark 12:40, Luke 11:39-42)

13You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you’re actually keeping people away from the kingdom of the heavens—you don’t enter yourselves and nor do you allow others to enter.

14 15You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you’d travel all the way around the world to make one convert, and then you’d make him twice the son of hell that you are yourselves.

16You blind guides will have a bad end. You say that if anyone makes an oath on the temple it’s worthless, but if they make an oath on the gold in the temple then they have to honour it. 17You are both stupid and blind, because which is greater: the gold, or the temple which makes the gold valuable? 18And you say that anyone who makes an oath on the altar it’s worthless, but anyone who makes an oath on the gift on the altar has to honour it. 19You are both stupid and blind, because which is greater: the gift, or the altar which makes the gift valuable? 20Anyone who makes an oath on the altar, is bound by both the altar and the things on it. 21Anyone who makes an oath on the temple, is bound by both the temple and God who lives in it. 22[ref]And anyone who makes an oath on heaven, is bound by both God’s throne and the one who’s sitting on it.

23[ref]You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you give a tenth of your herbs but you ignore the weightier parts of the commandments like justice and mercy and faith. Those are the things that should have been observed and not left out. 24You blind guides. You try to strain out a gnat and end up swallowing a camel.

25You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you scrub the outside of your cups and bowls but the inside is still full of greed and selfishness. 26You blind Pharisees. First you should clean the inside of your cup and dish so that the outside would also become clean.

27[ref]You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you are like whitewashed tombs. On the outside they might look nice, but the inside is full of the bones of the dead and all kinds of impurities, 28so even though the people might think you’re godly on the outside, actually your insides are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

13But woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_shutting the kingdom of_the heavens before the people, because/for you_all are_ neither _coming_in, nor are_you_all_allowing the ones coming_in to_come_in.
14 15Woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_going_around the sea and the dry land to_make one convert, and whenever he_may_become, you_all_are_making him a_son of_geenna twice_more than you_all.
16Woe to_you_all, blind guides, you_all saying:
Whoever wishfully may_swear by the temple, it_is nothing, but whoever wishfully may_swear by the gold of_the temple is_owing.
17Foolish and blind.
For/Because which is greater, the gold or the temple which having_sanctified the gold?
18And:
Whoever wishfully may_swear by the altar, it_is nothing, but whoever wishfully may_swear by the gift which on it is_owing.
19Foolish and blind.
For/Because which greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifying the gift?
20Therefore the one having_swore by the altar, is_swearing by it and by all the things on it.
21And the one having_swore by the temple, is_swearing by it and by the one dwelling_in it.
22And the one having_swore by the heaven, is_swearing by the throne of_ the _god and by the one sitting on it.
23Woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_tithing the mint and the dill and the cummin, and you_all_left the heavier of_the law:
the justice and the mercy and the faith.
But it_was_fitting to_do these things, and_those not to_leave.
24Blind guides.
You_all straining_out the gnat and swallowing_up the camel.
25Woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_cleansing the part outside of_the cup and of_the dish, but inside they_are_being_full of theft and intemperance.
26Blind Farisaios_party_member.
Cleanse first the part inside of_the cup and of_the dish, in_order_that the part outside of_them may_ also _become clean.
27Woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_being_like to_tombs having_been_whitewashed, which on_one_hand are_appearing beautiful outwardly, on_the_other_hand inside they_are_being_full of_bones of_the_dead and of_all impurity.
28Thus also on_one_hand you_all are_being_seen righteous outwardly by_the people, on_the_other_hand inside you_all_are full of_hypocrisy and lawlessness.

23:29 Punishment for mistreating prophets

(Luke 11:47-51)

29You religious teachers and Pharisees are hypocrites and will have a bad end because you rebuild the prophets’ tombs and adorn the tombs of godly people, 30and you tell yourselves, ‘If we’d lived back in those days, we wouldn’t have had any part in killing the prophets.’ 31By saying that, you’re admitting to yourselves that you’re the descendants of the ones who killed the prophets 32actually you’re just the same as your ancestors. 33[ref]Bunch of snakes, brood of vipers, how do you think that you’ll escape the judgement of hell? 34Because of that, listen, I’m now sending out more prophets and wise preachers and teachers to you all. You’ll kill off some of them and have others executed on stakes. You’ll flog some of them in your meeting halls, and you’ll persecute others from city to city, 35[ref]so that the judgement for all the deaths of godly people around the world will fall on you all. This includes the blood of the innocent Abel all the way through the centuries to the blood of Zechariah (son of Berekiah) who you all murdered between the temple and the altar. 36Yes, I can assure you that all these things will happen to this generation.

29Woe to_you_all, scribes and Farisaios_party, hypocrites.
Because you_all_are_building the tombs of_the prophets, and you_all_are_adorning the tombs of_the righteous
30and you_all_are_saying:
If we_were in the days of_the fathers of_us, we_ would not _were partners with_them in the blood of_the prophets.
31So_then you_all_are_testifying to_yourselves that you_all_are sons of_the ones having_murdered the prophets.
32Also you_all fill the measure of_the fathers of_you_all.
33Serpents, brood of_vipers, how may_you_all_escape from the judgment of_ the _geenna?
34Because_of this, see, I am_sending_out prophets and wise ones, and scribes to you_all.
You_all_will_be_killing_off and you_all_will_be_executing_on_a_stake of them, and you_all_will_be_flogging of them in the synagogues of_you_all, and you_all_will_be_persecuting from city to city,
35so_that all righteous blood being_poured_out on the earth may_come on you_all, from the blood of_Abel/(Heⱱel) the righteous, to the blood of_Zaⱪarias son of_Baraⱪias/(Berekyāh), whom you_all_murdered between the temple and the altar.
36Truly, I_am_saying to_you_all, all these things will_be_coming on the this generation.

23:37 Yeshua’s concern for Yerushalem

(Luke 13:34-35)

37Yerushalem, Yerushalem, the city that murders the prophets and throws rocks to kill those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your inhabitants like a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you didn’t want that. 38[ref]So listen, now your temple will be left uninhabited, 39[ref]because I’m telling you that you certainly won’t see me again until you can say, ‘The person coming in the name of the master has been blessed.’

37Hierousalaʸm/(Yərūshālayim), Hierousalaʸm, the city killing_off the prophets and throwing_stones the ones having_been_sent_out to her.
How_often I_wanted to_gather_together the children of_you, which manner a_hen is_gathering_together the chicks of_her under her wings, and you_all_ not _willed.
38Behold, the house of_you_all is_being_left desolate to_you_all.
39For/Because I_am_saying to_you_all, by_no_means you_all_may_ not _see me from now until wishfully you_all_may_say:
The one coming in name of_the_master having_been_blessed.
